A Community Partnership to Save Our Children

INTRODUCTION

JUST THE FACTS

If you are reading this information you may be one of the many youth in Georgia who live in communities affected by crime. On any given day more than 30,000 youth are under the supervision of the juvenile justice system in Georgia. Many of the teenagers entering our juvenile and prison systems today are there because they were influenced by peer pressure or made the wrong choices that led to academic failure, truancy, and illegal activities. A growing prison population affects all Georgians, whether we live in one of the top ten areas contributing to the prison population or not. One in every 15 adult Georgians is under the supervision of state corrections. Simply put, no Georgian is unaffected by crime.
The Office of the Governor, the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, the Children Youth and Coordinating Council, and the Georgia Department of Corrections are pleased to announce the launching of our first prevention awareness campaign, "Make the Right Choice, Choose Freedom." This campaign will target at-risk young Georgians from the top ten zip codes with the highest crime rates. We will educate them on the consequences that come from making bad decisions. We will encourage them to Make the Right Choice, Choose Freedom.
The Make the Right Choice, Choose Freedom Campaign includes print, television and radio public service announcements, offender testimonials and education initiatives. We plan to educate Georgia's youth about the severity of Georgia's sentencing laws and about their options to live crime free as young adults. Join us and become a voice and supporter of this campaign.

In Georgia, parole has been abolished for the seven most violent crimes.
Georgia's recidivist law requires persons convicted of their 4th subsequent felony Any Felony - to serve 100% of that 4th felony sentence.
Georgia's "Two Strikes" Law requires persons convicted for the first time of the "Seven Deadly Sins" to serve all of their prison sentence with a minimum of 10 years and NO CHANCE OF PAROLE.
The "SEVEN DEADLY SINS" are: RAPE MURDER KIDNAPPING ARMED ROBBERY AGGRAVATED SEXUAL BATTERY AGGRAVATED SODOMY AGGRAVATED CHILD MOLESTATION
If you are young, ages 13-16, and convicted of one of the "Seven Deadly Sins" - you will serve all of your time in an adult prison.
Persons convicted of any of these crimes for a second time must be sentenced to LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE.
