Georgia Newborn Screening Program

Most babies with serious disorders appear healthy and show no signs of being sick right after birth.
The following tests can find serious diseases during the newborn period and are required by Georgia law:
Hearing Screening Blood Screening Critical Congenital Heart Disease
(CCHD) Screening
Confirm that your newborn baby has been screened for serious conditions BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE HOSPITAL.
BABIES BORN OUTSIDE OF A HOSPITAL, BIRTHING CENTER OR OTHER HEALTH CARE FACILITY ALSO REQUIRE SCREENING.
The attendant that delivers your baby will tell you where and when to get your baby tested.

Hearing Screening
More than half of babies born with hearing problems are otherwise healthy and have no family history of hearing loss.
Hearing screening is safe and painless and is the most efficient way to know that your baby can hear.
If your baby does not pass the hearing screen in the hospital, talk with his or her doctor to have hearing tested again by 1 month of age.
Early detection of hearing loss and early intervention can help your baby develop to their full potential.
Blood Screening
Tests for over 30 disorders.
All of the disorders are treatable and it is important to get treatment early.
Several drops of blood will be taken from your baby's heel at 24 to 48 hours old.
If a repeat test is needed, bring your baby into their doctor's office as soon as you can. If a problem exists, quick action is very important.
CCHD Screening
Pulse oximetry screening is a simple, painless test that is used to measure the amount of oxygen in the blood and detect CCHD.
If a baby is identified as possibly having CCHD, the baby will be referred or transferred to a specialist for further evaluation and treatment.

La mayora de los bebs con enfermedades graves aparentan estar sanos y no muestran seales de estar enfermos inmediatamente despus de nacer.
Las siguientes pruebas pueden encontrar enfermedades graves durante el periodo de recin nacido y son obligatorias segn las leyes de Georgia:
Examen de audicin
Examen de sangre

Confirme que a su beb recin nacido se le hayan hecho los exmenes para detectar afecciones graves ANTES DE QUE SALGA DEL HOSPITAL.
LOS BEBS QUE NACEN FUERA DE UN HOSPITAL, CENTRO DE PARTO U OTRAS INSTALACIONES DE ATENCIN MDICA TAMBIN NECESITAN EL EXAMEN.
La persona que atienda el parto le dir dnde y cundo debe hacerse el examen a su beb.

Examen de audicin
Ms de la mitad de los bebs que nacen con problemas de audicin son, por lo general, saludables y no tienen historia familiar de prdida de audicin.
El examen de audicin es seguro y no duele y es la manera ms eficiente de saber que su beb puede or.
Si su beb no pasa el examen de audicin en el hospital, hable con su mdico para que le hagan otro examen de audicin cuando cumpla 1 mes de edad.
La deteccin temprana de la prdida de audicin y la intervencin temprana pueden ayudar a su beb a desarrollar su mximo potencial.
Examen de sangre
Pruebas para ms de 30 trastornos.
Todos los trastornos son tratables y es importante obtener tratamiento a tiempo.
Se tomarn varias gotas de sangre del taln de su beb cuando tenga 24 a 48 horas de nacido.
Si se necesita repetir el examen, traiga a su beb al consultorio del mdico tan pronto como le sea posible. Es muy importante actuar rpido si existe un problema.
Examen de CCHD
El examen de oximetra de pulso es una prueba simple y sin dolor que se usa para medir la cantidad de oxgeno en la sangre y detecta la CCHD.
Si se identifica la posibilidad de que un beb tenga la CCHD, el beb ser remitido o transferido a un especialista para evaluacin y tratamiento.
