The Lake Russell Rowing Center at Richard B. Russell State Park offers rowing teams an excellent place to practice and compete . . .
Richard B. Russell State Park's Rowing Center was opened in 1996 as the training site chosen by the 11 international Olympic rowing teams, including the United States, Canada, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Japan, Moldavia, New Zealand, Russia and Sweden. Since the 1996 Olympics, the center has hosted various college teams, serving as a training site. In the past several years, the Atlantic Coast Conference teams and the Southeast Conference teams have held rowing events at the park.
The Rowing Center's amenities include four rowing lanes with a middle lane for coaches, a secured storage area by the boat ramp, a dock for loading boats, grill and picnic areas, and restrooms. A pontoon boat is available for rent by coaches, and the center is open to both team and individual use. Some groups choose to spend the day rowing then relaxing by cooking out by the water's edge.
Richard B. Russell State Park is located north of Elberton, "the granite capital of the world," on the beautiful shores of 26,500-acre Lake Russell. It offers a variety of outdoor activities, including camping, picnicking, water skiing, canoeing, fishing, boating, hiking, swimming, beach volleyball, disc golf and championship golf.
Visitors staying two or more nights can choose from 17 fully furnished cottages or 28 campsites. Cottages accommodate eight people and feature two bedrooms with two double beds in each room, two full baths, and a living/dining room combination with fireplace and cable television. The kitchen is fully equipped with a refrigerator, oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and dishwasher. Utensils, plates, silverware and glasses are provided for eight. Rocking chairs on the large screened porches provide relaxing views of the lake.
A 28-site campground is located near the lake. Each site offers water, electric and cable TV hookups (no sewage hookups). All sites are located near a modern comfort station with hot showers, laundry, pay phones and playground.
A 27-hole disc golf course covers more than 20 acres of rolling countryside. This new trend of golf is played with a flying disc (like a Frisbee) instead of a club. The objective is to score the least number of disc tosses on each hole. Discs are available for sale at the park office.
Canoes, pedal boats and pontoon boats are available for rent on an hourly or daily basis. Life jackets and paddles are provided. Visitors should ask about rules and safety regulations when renting these boats.
Multi-use trails meander through the park, connecting each facility. These trails are perfect for a morning jog or late afternoon walk, bike rides, wildlife viewing or simply discovering nature. A recycled rubber trail starts at the beach parking lot and ends at the McNeeley Pavilion, with nature signs along the way.
Fishing on Lake Russell is among the best in the state, with major tournaments held yearly. An annual fishing derby is held to introduce young anglers to the joys of fishing. Two boat ramps are available.
