I n October of 1992 the Georgia Department of Natural Resources updated the Georgia Protected Species List to include 214 species of animals and plants. This publication contains the official list of all Georgia's protected species, including scientific names, common names, their status in Georgia, and lastly their national status. Please use the definitions and the key below to read the list. If you need further information concerning any of the listed species, please write the Nongame-Endangered Wildlife Program at Rt. 5, Box 180, Forsyth, GA 31029 or call (912) 994-1438.
E-Endangered: A species which is in danger of extinction throughout all or part of its range.
T-Threatened: A species which is likely to become an endangered species in the foreseeable future throughout all or part of its range.
R-Rare: A species which may not be endangered or threatened, but which should be protected because it is so scarce.
U-Unusual: A species which has special or unique features that make its survival important
C-Candidate: This species is known as a candidate for the list; however, this class is under investigation as to its need for protection.
