Situated in we t Crisp County on a penin sula urrounded by Lake Blackshear, Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park is a memorial as well as an out tanding recreation area. The park was established as a permanent memorial to the veterans who served , fought, and died to uphold the founding principles of the United State of America. The park museum and outdoor military exhibits serve as phy ical reminders of the veterans in a recreational etting on the shore of Lake Blackshear.
In 1946, the Commi sioners of Crisp County deeded to the State of Georgia a tract of land for the establi hment of a park to memorialize Georgia War Veterans. In 1951 , the Georgia Department of Veteran of Foreign Wars of the United States deeded additional land to the park until now it encompasses 1307 acre .
Lake Blackshear is a 13 ,000 acre lake that was formed when the Crisp County Power Company put a dam on the Flint River to generate hydro electricity. The lake was named in honor of General Blackshear who was an army general during the Creek Indian wars in pioneer Georgia.
The park is easily accessible by going west from Cordele on U.S. #280. Enjoy your stay and plan to
visit other Georgia State Parks conveniently located throughout the State.
SWIMMING: Swimming permitted during the summer only when the pool is open and a lifeguard on duty. Inflatable floats prohibited in the park wimming pool . Conventional swimwear is required in the park pool. Cut off jeans or similar attire is NOT PERMITTED. Pool i CLOSED ON MONDAYS. People with a physical handicap
hould make their disability known to the lifeguard. A bathhou e i provided.
FISHING: Fishing in park waters is open to legal fi hing throughout the year. Per on age 16 or older mu t have a valid State Fishing Licen e. Nonresident age 16 or older must have a valid nonresi dent licen e. Bank fishermen not regi tered a overnight visitors must be off park premises no later than park closing time.
For your u e and convenience a fi hing dock and boat launching area are provided. Fishing supplies can be purchased at the Tackle Box or Trading Post (see map for location) .
BOATING: Private boats are permitted on park waters. No horsepower limitation . Water kiing is permitted. A boat launching area and boat dock are provided. All boat use must be done in conformance with the Georgia Boating Safety Law.
CAMPING: The camping area offer 100 combination tent and trailer sites . All sites have water and electrical hookups, picnic table , and grills. There are 2 comfort stations providing hot showers , flu sh toilets , electrical outlet and automatic laundry. One dump station is provided.
NO RESER VA TIONS accepted , all camp ites rented on a first-come , fir t- erved basi s. Organized groups are not eligible to occupy camping area. All campers must register for sites at the Park Office. Campers under age 18 must be accompanied by a n adult.
Maximum stay is 14 days. Dishwashing PROHIBITED at all drinking faucet and comfort stations. Please be considerate of other camper . Trash and garbage receptacles are available in all camping areas. PLEASE USE THEM.

PIONEER CAMPING: The Pioneer Camping Area is completely eparate from all other ac tivity areas on the park . This allows the group to camp and follow a program of activitie without di turbance from other park visitor . Refer to map for location. The area(s) is/are available at NO CHARGE to any organized youth group such as Boy Scout , Girl Scouts, etc.
Facilities provided a re a cleared area for tents, water (by ha nd pump , faucet or spring) and a primitivetype sanitary facility (pit privy) .
PICNICKING: Picnicking permitted only in designated areas throughout the park. Tables and shelters available on a fir t-come , fir t- erved ba i . Trash and garbage receptacles are located in all picnicking area . PLEASE USE THEM. Day-use picnicking not permitted in camping area.
COTTAGES: The park provides 14 cottages fully equipped with electric stove , refrigerator, and all necessa ry cooking and food serving facilities. Towels and linens are provided . All cottage are heated and air conditioned.
Re ervation are accepted for a 2 week maximum and a 2 day minimum. Contact Park Office for reservation , check in times and rates . NO RESERVATIONS will be accepted for one night stays. A depo it equalling a I day rental charge is required . Ca ncellations accepted and deposit refunded if Park Office is notified 48 hour in advance. Reservations for all cottages can be accepted on an It-month maximum advance notice.
NO PETS allowed in cottages or in cottage area. No kennels are provided.
Organized groups are not eligible to rent cottages.

HORSEBACK RIDING: For visitor having their own horses the park provides stable and trail facilities . The park provides no ho rse or feed. You mu t bring your own horse , feed , a nd equipment.
Contact the Park Office for table reservations and rental fee rates. The entire table or individual tails can be rented . The minimum stay is I day ; the maximum stay is 14 days . A non-refundable deposit equalling the I day fee is required .
All horse brought onto the park premi se mu st have proof of a negative Coggin Test.
To be eligible to table a horse you must be a stayu e vi itor. As long a space i available, ca mping is allowed in the Stable Area.
There i a small charge to day-use vi sitors to ride the bridle trail. Person stabling horse can ride the trail fo r free .
MINIATURE GOLF: A m1mature golf cour e is conveniently located in the day-u e area. Contact Park Office for operating times and rates.
PLAYGROUND: A children' playground is conveniently located in the day-u e area of the park . Playgrou nd equipment is also located in the tay-u e area of the park .
GROUP SHELTERS: Two large , scree ned shelters can be rented for family reunion and other large groups. Facilities include electric lights, a stove , a ink with hot and cold running water , restrooms , table and chairs. Contact Park Office for reservation and rates .
MUSEUM: The park headquarters co nt ai n a mu seum that hou ses many reminders of the Nation ' military past. Photographs, maps, uniform , weapons and other equipment serve to memorialize individuals that represent the various branche of ervice through the years. Contact the Park Office for museum hours.
