The Georgia Department of Motor Vehicle Safety (DMVS) is the State's newest agency performing existing governmental functions with a new concept of customer service while maintaining security and integrity. The philosophy of this new Department entails the three "e's" of customer service: Consideration, Convenience and Courtesy. We have had an exciting first year implementing many new policies and procedures to make doing business with our agency easier for all Georgians.

.:. April 2000 - The Department of Motor Vehicle Safety
was created by the Georgia General Assembly with the passage of HB 1441 and was signed by the Governor on April 28, 2000.
.:. February 2001 - Governor Roy Barnes, Lt. Governor
Mark Taylor and Speaker of the House Thomas B. Murphy appoint a nine-member Board of Directors.
.:. June 2001 - Governor Roy Barnes
nominates, and the DMVS Board of Directors appoints, Tim Burgess as the first Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicle Safety.
.:. July 2001 - Implemented drivers license appointment
system for those who want to get a driver's license for the first time or exchange an out of state license. This system is operating at a phenomenal 92'Yo capacity and has made 50,238 appointments in its first year of operation.
.:. October 2001 - Established a Headquarters Office in
Conyers .
.:. October 2001 - DMVS Website www.dmvs.ga.govwent
live. By July, the site has had over 1,000,000 hits approximately 4,496 per day.
.:. October 2001 - Completed move into Conyers building
after only 120 days while closing only one driver's licensing facility for only one day. Moved over 300 people from four separate locations over three weekends and established all LAN connectivity.
.:. October 2001 - Online Automobile Dealer Inquiry service
is offered via www.dmvs.ga.gov.This service enables dealers to do inquiries for title history and/or tag history.
.:. October 23, 2001 - Opened a new Driver's Service
Center in Conyers for those customers located in metroAtlanta who need to get their driver's license reinstated. This facility served as the testing facility for new "customer friendly" design techniques including the automatic queuing system and well designed floor plan utilizing a receptionist/greeter to check documents.
This facility has recorded serving 750 customers in a single day I helping each in less than thirty minutes. The total number of customers being served far exceeds our prior expectations.
.:. November 1, 2001 - Assumed full control over budget
and management of expenditures for all departmental functions. Organized management structure and reporting relationships.
.:. November 2, 2001 - The Enforcement Division assumes
responsibility for I-85 HOV Lane extensions. All HOV lanes in metro-Atlanta are enforced 24 hours a day seven days a week.
.:. November 2001 - With Lt. Governor Mark Taylor,
DMVS unveiled the "Parental Guide to New Teenage Driving Requirements" to explain the new teenage driving rules and regulations to be effective January 1, 2002 .

.:. November 14. 2001 - Governor Roy Barnes swore in
over 300 new DMVS Enforcement Officers in ceremony at Training Center in Forsyth.
.:. November 15. 2001 - Successfully issued the first
consolidated payroll for all DMVS employees.
.:. December 1, 2001 - Launched Internet Renewal Pilot
Project in partnership with 13 county Tax Commissioners
where Georgia citizens can renew their vehicle tag and
registration via the DMVS website. Project begins with
Bibb, Chatham, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett and Whitfield

Counties. Approximately 23,790 registrations have been issued via the Internet through July.

.:. December 6, 2001 - New Chatham County (Savannah)
Driver Services facility announced as a joint effort with DMVS and the Chatham County Board of Commissioners.
.:. January 1, 2002-Present - DeKalb, Lowndes
Spalding, Rockdale and Columbia counties join Internet Renewal Program for vehicle registration.
.:. January 1, 2002 - Individual Motor Vehicle Reports
(MVR) are available via the Internet to all certified requestors.
.:. January 15, 2002 - Driver Services Examiners began
wearing new uniforms.
.:. February 1, 2002 - The first agency wide newsletter
"The Driving Force" is distributed to each employee and friends of the DMVS .
.:. February 7, 2002 - Commissioner Burgess announces
leases have been signed for Driver Services facilities in DeKalb and Cobb Counties. DeKalb to be completed by May and Cobb to open in June.
.:. February 8, 2002 - Commissioner Burgess administers
the oath of office to the first class of driver services license examiners to complete the extensive two-week training class. To date, four classes of new license examiners have been sworn in.
.:. February 13, 2002 - Governor Roy Barnes issues
challenge to the DMVS: "At any driver's license facility in the State if you are in line to renew your license for longer than 30 minutes, the State will pay for your license." The policy will start January 1, 2003. The four new driver's license stations, to be opened this summer in DeKalb, Cobb, Fulton and Gwinnett will try the system sooner. After six weeks to settle in, the new stations will begin renewing licenses in 45 minutes or the license is free. After January, they too will meet the 3D-minute limit. This policy went into effect at the new DeKalb facility on July 5 and will begin at the new Cobb facility on August 23 .
.:. April 15, 2002 - Ribbon Cutting for relocation of
Covington Driver's Services facility. It is incorporated into the Newton County Community Partnership renovations of an old middle school.
.:. April 29 - May 4, 2002 - Public Service
Announcements begin on radio and television alerting Georgians of the new Mail-in driver's license program and the need to keep their addresses current with the DMVS.
.:. May 1, 2002 - Mail-in driver's
license renewal program is launched with private partners Synovus, Columbus Bank and Trust and TSYS. Approximately 18,000 - 25,000 Renewal Applications are mailed each week to Georgia citizens with July 1st and birthdays thereafter. By July 1st, 49,486 applications to renew by mail have been returned and processed.
.:. May 13 - May 18, 2002 - Second week of Public
Service Announcements run on radio and television concerning Mail-in driver's license program.
.:. May 15, 2002 - First Day of Operation for new DeKalb
Driver Services Facility, the first of the big four centers .
.:. May 22, 2002 - Governor Roy Barnes, Commissioner
Burgess and DMVS Board of Directors officially open the new DeKalb Driver Services Center.
.:. June 21, 2002 - First day of operation for new Cobb
County Driver Services Center, the second of the big four centers.
:. JUly 1, 2002 - The ~emaining two counties join the
Georgia Registration and Title Information System (GRATIS) completing full state implementation in 159 counties. Titles can be applied for and registered over the counter in any county tag office in the State. In most cases, the titles will be mailed from Headquarters in three business days. Specialty vehicle tags are now issued in days instead of months.
:. July 1, 2002 - Governor Barnes and Commissioner
Burgess launch Driver's License Internet Renewal Program. Georgians may now renew licenses by mail or Internet every other expiration. At press time, over 2,478 Georgians have chosen to renew their driver's license via the State's website: Georgia.Gov.
