Introduction

The Georgia Career Planner is designed to help you in your career decision-making process by presenting the latest, most reliable career exploratory information in an easy-to-understand format. The Planner includes the careers that are expected to have at least 100 job openings per year over the next decade. The 240 occupations listed represent almost 88 percent of all expected job openings in Georgia to the year 2020.

Occupational Groups and Job Education Levels
Occupations in the Planner are split into the 22 major groups recognized by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Occupations within each group are arranged by educational level, and the number of annual openings. BLS introduced a new education and training system, which provides individual assignments to each occupation for three dimensions: education, work experience in a related occupation, and on the job training. Education level, which is usually the initial requirement needed for entry into a given occupation, will be the main component used in this publication.
There are eight possible assignments for the entry level education title category:

Doctoral or professional degree Master's degree Bachelor's degree Associate's degree

Postsecondary non-degree award Some college, no degree High school diploma or equivalent Less than high school

Career Characteristics
Careers are classified according to 20 different criteria typical of the majority of workers in each occupation. Criteria include eight different personal skills and abilities, ten different work characteristics, the average annual wage in 2012, and the projected number of annual job openings to the year 2020.

Symbols Used in the Table
The symbols used in the table are , , or a blank. If advanced level skills or abilities are required, or a work
characteristic is essential to the career, it is indicated with the symbol . If the career requires only a moderate level of skills and abilities, or a work characteristic is only occasionally required, it is indicated by the symbol .
A blank indicates no special level of skill or condition is required.

2 Georgia Career Planner

Each career designated as Hot meets all three of the following criteria:
average annual job growth greater than the projected statewide average of 1.1% per year average annual wage greater than the 2010 statewide average of $43,200 at least 100 projected annual job openings to the year 2020
"Green" jobs are highlighted with the Green symbol. These jobs involve work in at least one of the following areas:
reducing the use of fossil fuels decreasing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions increasing energy efficiency recycling materials developing and adopting renewable sources of energy
Using the Planner
Study the careers listed in the Planner and identify those you find interesting or that most closely match your strengths. Also consider your plans for education beyond high school. If you prefer to get some on-the-job experience before continuing your education, pay special attention to the career ladders shown in many of the occupational groups. A good strategy for you might be to start off in a career that does not require any postsecondary education, with plans for going after that related, more-rewarding career by attending college at a later time. For example, if you are interested in the healthcare field, you might start off as a (relatively semi-skilled) home health aid, and later train to become a licensed practical nurse, before going on to become a registered nurse.
Good luck with using the Georgia Career Planner. Whether you are a student or jobseeker, this crucial first step in preparing for the future will go a long way toward putting you on the right path to a rewarding career.
