Green Core Area Definitions
The Georgia Department of Labor's Workforce Statistics & Economic Research Division has identified five core areas of green business activities and green jobs. Green activities and jobs fall under one or more of the following five core areas:
Renewable Energy activities related to developing and using renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass, as well as traditional, non-renewable sources of energy undergoing significant green technological changes (e.g., oil, coal, gas, and nuclear)
Energy Efficiency activities related to increasing energy efficiency (broadly defined), making energy demand response more effective, constructing "smart grids", and other energy efficient activities
Pollution Reduction & Removal, Greenhouse Gas Reduction, & Recycling & Reuse activities related to reducing or eliminating the creation or release of pollutants or hazardous waste from the environment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions through methods other than renewable energy generation and energy efficiency, such as electricity generated from nuclear sources, or reusing, remanufacturing, composting, or avoiding creation of waste materials or wastewater
Natural Resources Conservation activities related to reducing the environmental impact of agricultural production and improving natural resources conservation, including the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, soil and water conservation, sustainable forestry, land management, and wildlife preservation
Environmental Compliance, Education & Training, & Public Awareness activities related to enforcing environmental regulations, providing education & training related to green technologies & practices, & increasing public awareness of environmental issues

The Georgia Department of Labor recently conducted a Green Jobs Survey to assess current levels of "green" employment in the state. This pamphlet presents our findings for Service Delivery Region (SDR) #7 Central Savannah River Area.
Broadly defined, a green job is one that produces goods or provides services that benefit the environment. The work can be found in at least one of the five core green economic clusters listed on the back of this pamphlet.
Nearly one percent of all jobs in this region are green, roughly the same percentage as in the state as a whole. Of the approximately 40,000 total green jobs in Georgia, 950, or more than two percent, are located in this region. These jobs can be found in every green economic cluster except renewable energy, in seven major industry sectors, and in 24 different occupations. They range from jobs that do not require any education beyond high school to positions that require a bachelor's degree.
Survey Highlights
Ten of the 24 green jobs had an average wage higher than Georgia's mean wage ($20.56) for all occupational employment, while nine occupations had an average wage ($22.75) higher than all green jobs combined.
The average wage ($19.06) for green jobs in this region is nearly three percent higher than the mean wage ($18.55) for all occupations.
The Central Savannah River Area SDR was one of six that did not have any green jobs in the renewable energy core area.
Green jobs in goods-producing industry sectors, led by construction, comprised 66 percent of all green employment.
Six of the 24 green jobs in this region typically require a bachelor's degree.
