FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Promoting OPPORTUNITIES for educationally or financially disadvantaged students to be ACCEPTED to, PREPARED for and SUPPORTED in one of Georgia's four ABA-approved
Law Schools.

ESTABLISHING THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
In 1999 Chief Justice Robert Benham and the Deans of Georgia's four ABA-approved Law Schools initiated a program of intense preparation and financial support for educationally or financially disadvantaged applicants to the Law Schools. Each of the Law Schools selects four students from its applicant pool, who because of educational disavantages would not have been admitted, to enroll in the Fellowship Program. The 16 students are chosen because they are considered motivated to overcome all obstacles to realize their dream of becoming a lawyer. The program's success is now a source of pride for the judiciary, the Law Schools and the legal profession of Georgia.

SUMMER INSTITUTE
Fellowship students enroll in an intensive fourweek course of study prior to admission to law
school. Courses offered include contracts, criminal law, legal writing and professionalism. Four law professors, three teaching assistants and a program administrator work with the 16 students. Students are housed on campus and provided with a modest living allowance. Each student's admission to law school is contigent upon successful completion of the Summer Institute. Each of the Fellows is either a Georgia native or received an undergraduate degree from a Georgia college or university.
GOALS Access to a legal education for economically or
educationally disadvantaged students
Preparation for success in Law School through a Summer Institute, financial aid and mentoring
Diversity in the legal profession

FINANCIAL AID
Each student receives a $5,000 annual stipend while enrolled in law school. The stipend mitigates the need for part-time employment and helps control the amounts that must be borrowed to pay law school tuition. Fellowship students are also placed in summer jobs with a public interest organization after their first year of law school.
