Flooding on Jekyll Island can be caused by tropical storms and hurricanes. Flood waters can cover streets up to two or three feet deep. The areas most prone to flooding are along the beach and marshes.
Flooding can come with little warning. Please take heed of any storm and hurricane warnings on Jekyll Island.
Since Jekyll Island is a barrier island, storm water can sometimes simply overwhelm the street drainage. Leaves and other debris can clog storm drains, causing water to back up into lower-lying areas. Residents are encouraged not to blow yard waste into the street, in order to prevent clogging of the storm water grates.

PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY
Flooding causes more property damage in the United States than any other type of natural disaster.
Property losses due to flooding are not covered under most homeowners' insurance policies; however, flood insurance can be obtained through the National Flood Insurance Program.
Since there is usually a 30 day waiting period before a flood insurance policy takes effect, do not wait until a storm threatens before securing flood insurance.

BEFORE A FLOOD
- Construct barriers around your home using sand bags - Elevate furniture and electronics above flood levels - Pack an emergency bag with essentials, including medication - Plan a meeting point for your family in case of separation - Turn off utilities and disconnect electrical appliances - Evacuate and move to higher ground if instructed to
DURING A FLOOD
- DO NOT walk through moving water - DO NOT touch electrical equipment while standing in water - DO NOT drive through flooded area
AFTER A FLOOD
- Listen to news reports for updates on when to return home. - Avoid all outside water, especially if its moving - Stay away from downed power lines and drive carefully
