The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is one of the most respected and innovative law enforcement agencies in the nation. With highly trained, dedicated employees, the GBI brings state-of-the-art solutions to today'5 law enforcement challenges.
The GEl consists of three divisions: the Division of Forensic Sciences (OOFS), the Investigative Division, and the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC).
CRIME LABORATORY SCIENTIST
Petfonns laboratory examinations, scientific analyses and comparisons on physical evidence submitted by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies for investigative and
legal purposes
VARIOUS SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
TRACE EVIDENCE
o Compares and analyzes hair, fi-
bers, glass, paint, soil. and shoe and tire tracks

o Processes firearms and tool-
mark related physical evidence
o Examines hand wipings for the
presence of gunshot residue, serial number restoration, crime scene investigation and instrument repair
CHEMISTRY / DRUG IDENTIFICATION
o Analyzes chemical compounds
submitted by various law enforcement agencies and determines if these compounds are in violation of federal and state drug laws
o Assists law enforcement agen-
cies inclandeshne laboratory seizures, provides technical support in undercover operations, and supplies the
courts and other agencies with factual drug information D Provides information to the general public and news media about drug abuse D Isolates, identifies and classifies flammable and combustible liquids D Assists fire investigators in determining the origin and cause of a fire through analysis of the evidence D Evaluates and identifies or classifies explosive/ incendiary devices

dence involving handwriting, handprinting, and numerals; documents produced by mechanical devices such as typewriters, check writers, office machines! copiers and printing processes; and rubber-stamps, indented writing, burned, charred and damaged documents
o Evaluates dated documents,
ink and writing instruments; and sequence of lines, paper, seals, staples and clips
o Analyzes entry problems, frac-
ture matching and fragmentation, alterations, additions, deletions, erasures, substitutions, and obliterations

SEROLOGY / DNA
o Conducts blood and seminal
fluid typing
o Checks for biologicals - saliva,
urine, and seminal fluid
o Conducts DNA profiling in-
volving violent personal crimes, such as murder, rape and sexual assault, for which a suspect has been identified or in which there is considerable evidence that a series of crimes is being committed by a single individual
I TOXICOLOGY
o Analyzes biological specimens
for the presence of drugs and poisons. The specimens submitted may come from one of two different sources: living persons who may have been arrested for DUI and/or drug possession, or deceased individuals from medical examiner cases.
