Centuries ago native Americans sought out Warm Springs for the medicinal qualities they believed to be contained in the mineral-laden waters. Generations of warriors from the Creek Confederacy in Georgia and Alabama made pilgrimages in search of health and strength.
In the nineteenth century captains of industry turned Warm Springs (known then as Bullochville) into a popular spa resort. The fashionable "Meriwether Inn" was built in 1869 attracting visitors with trendy amusements and activities.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt discovered relief from the debilitating effects of polio in the soothing waters of Warm Springs and in 1927 founded a treatment center for polio patients. Designed from the beginning for accessibility, the facility earned a reputation for the quality of service and ilillovation which became tradition at the Roosevelt Institute.
