What is the Georgia Farmers'Market Nutrition Program?
The Georgia Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (GFMNP) allows Women, Infants and Children (WIC) participants to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables directly from authorized farmers' markets in their communities. Participants are given coupons to purchase fresh fru its and vegetables.
The fresh produce is provided in addition to the foods they normally receive. Local farmers are reimbursed for the face value of the coupons, which enhances their earnings and supports participation in the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program.
What are GFMNP coupons?
Each GFMNP coupon is worth $2.00. Every participant receives a one time issuance of ten coupons. Coupons may be redeemed June 1 through October 31 of each year at participating farmers' markets.
The local WIC site will provide a list of farmers' markets authorized to accept coupons. All farmers participating in GFMNP will have a poster stating: "I Accept GFMNP Coupons."

What foods are allowed?
Coupons are to be used to purchase only fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables grown by local Georgia farmers and sold at authorized farmers' market sites.
Participants are given a handout that lists fresh fruits and vegetables grown in the State of Georgia.

Why is this program

.

?

Fresh fruits and vegetables contain the nutrients necessary to help keep the body healthy and strong. Eating a variety of produce daily has been shown to reduce the risk associated with certain cancers, high blood pressure, stroke, cardiovascular diseases and many other medical conditions.

Who benefits from the program?
WIC participants and local farmers benefit from The Farmers' Market Nutrition Program. The program is designed to:
encourage WIC participants to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.
promote the purchase and consumption of locally grown fruits and vegetables. The farmers'
markets offer opportunities for WIC participants to try a variety of locally grown fresh produce and receive tips on how to prepare them.
promote Georgia agriculture. Local
farmers sell directly to the consumer. The proceeds from the purchase go directly to the farmer and support Georgia's farm economy.
