There was an increase in physicians becoming board certified between 1996 and 2006.
1996: 91.2% of gastroenterologists were board certified compared to 73.4% of total physicians.
2006: 87.8% of gastroenterologists were board certified compared to 83.2% of total physicians.

MSA VERSUS NON-MSA DISTRIBUTION OF GASTROENTEROLOGY PHYSICIANS
Gastroenterology physicians have always been concentrated in Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). Likewise, there has been a decline of gastroenterologists practicing in Non-Metropolitan Statistical Areas (Non-MSAs). From 2004 to 2006, there was a 5.4% decrease in the percentage of gastroenterologists practicing in Non-MSA designated areas.

Since 1996, there has been a 3.7% increase in the number of female gastroenterologists practicing in Georgia. Additionally, the percentage of black gastroenterologists has increased by 5.9%. The percentage of white gastroenterology physicians has decreased by 7.7%, while the percentage of Asian gastroenterologists has decreased by 2.1%

TRENDS IN THE NUMBER AND RATE OF GASTROENTEROLOGY PHYSICIANS
Over the last ten years, the NUMBER of gastroenterology physicians practicing in Georgia has fluctuated from year-to-year, but increased overall. The RATE for gastroenterology physicians has declined from 1996 to 2004; however, there was a 1.3 rate increase in 2006.
