THE NATIONAL MANUFACTURING WAGE PICTURE
Over the past ten years (from 1965 through 1974) the U.S. average manufacturing wage has risen $1.62 per hour from $2.61 to $4.23, an increase of 62%.
This study of regional and state differentials represents an effort to provide comparative information on wage rates in Georgia. All figures were taken from U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics and are the actual average manufacturing wages paid for the time periods shown. Sources for this study are
Employment and Earnings, States and Areas l939-l972 and Employment and Earnings May> l974> published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor.
Contrary to some opinions, wage differentials from region to region and state to state do exist. In some cases, they are increasing. For the ten year period 1965 through 1974, the Georgia average manufacturing wage rose from $2.01 to $3.39 per hour. During the same time period the U.S. average rose from $2.61 to $4.23. The differential increased from $.60 to $.84 per hour over the ten-year period. At the 1974 differential of $.84 per hour, the total yearly wage differential for various sizes of plants is as follows:
Plant Size Number of Employees
Total Yearly Differential* United States Average & Georgia Average
50
$ 87,360
100
174,720
250
436,800
500
873,600
In the highly industrialized Eas.t North Central Region, where the wage differential between that region and Georgia is $1.54 per hour, the same plant size projections reveal the following:
Plant Size Number of Employees
Total Yearly Differential* East North Central Region Average & Georgia Average
50
$ 166,566
100
333,132
250
832 '830
500
1,665,660
Reviewing all of the data presented here leads to these conclusions:
1. Manufacturing wage differentials state to state, and region to region continue to exist, with differentials generally widening slightly between high wage and low wage states and regions.
II. The data for the past ten years shows no indication that regional differences will level out in the foreseeable future. Contrarily, all indications would lead to the conclusion that present trends will continue.
*Number of employees x 40 hours x 52 weeks x $. 84 per hour .. - 1-
Two sets of comparisons are included in this study:
Nine census regions compared to Georgia
The forty-nine states and Total u.s. compared to Georgia
The state comparisons include a section comparing the fourteen major Standard Industrial Classifications, where information is available. This section permits further analysis to pinpoint significant differentials by industry type, from state to state. An index of the Standard Industrial Classification Code System is included for reference.

1/ Data not comparable with months prior to January 1962.
Note: These preliminary estimates were prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. Data cover 379,500 production workers and exclude supervisory, sales, clerical and other office personnel. Average earnings are computed on a "gross basis", reflecting changes in basic hourly and incentive wage rates as well as any premium pay for overtime and late shift work. The work week information rela.tes to average hours worked or paid for and differs from sched11led hours because of such factors as absenteeism, labor 1 turnover 1 part-time work, overtime work, and stoppage.
