Society of Addiction Spray Fact Sheet

1/16/18 3:01 PM

The problem
Nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription medication.1
More than 1 in 3 Americans use a prescription pain killer.2
Every day more than 1000 people are treated in emergency departments for not using prescription opioids as directed.1
Anyone
who takes prescription opioids can become addicted to them. Taking too many prescription opioids can stop a person's breathing, leading to
death.1

The facts
Drug overdose is the leading cause of
accidental death in the U.S. with opioid addiction driving this epidemic.3 Opioids include not only the illegal drug heroin, but also prescription pain relievers oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, fentanyl and others.3 Opioids are chemically related and interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the brain and nervous system to produce pleasurable effects and relieve pain.3 Pain relief is most commonly cited as the reason for misuse of opioids and close to half of those who misused got them from a family member or friend.2

What we can do

Narcan Nasal Spray

Narcan is the nasal spray form of Naloxone. Timely administration of a sufficient dose can reverse the lifethreatening breathing
difficulties caused by an opioid overdose.4

Narcan Nasal Spray is an FDA-approved,
needle-free Naloxone treatment. The nasal
spray is ready to use and can be given quickly
and easily without special training if an opioid overdose occurs.4

Narcan Nasal Spray is now available without a prescription at most drug stores across the
country. Just ask your pharmacist.

Anyone who is taking opioids, or friends and family members of someone taking opioids, should keep Narcan on hand.
If an overdose happens, time is critical. Call 911 and then quickly give the person Narcan. Remember Georgia's Good Samaritan Law. Medical amnesty is given to the person overdosing, and the person calling, when seeking medical help.
