INTRODUCTION
Prices are important at every point along the route farm products follow from production
through processing and marketing channels to the consumer Price information is thus an important
part of any farmmarketing program
The importance of prices is amply demonstrated by the table below which shows the quanities of
Georgia farm products needed to produce 1000 of Gross Income under differing price conditions The
cover chart shows that net farm income in Georgia has shrunk from 325 million dollars in 1950 to
269 million dollars in I960 despite a 243 million dollar increase in gross income This was influenced
along with other factors by the relationship between the prices received by farmers for the products
they sell and the prices paid for necessary production items
The tables on income and expenses demonstrate the importance of prices The other data con
tained within this bulletin consists of three primary parts prices received prices paid by Georgia
farmers and index numbers The prices received data published in this bulletin as well as the prices
received index are a continuation of the data published in the University of Georgias College of Agri
culture Bulletin N S 29 in 1956 plus additional prices received series that have become available
This marks the first time that a significant series on prices paid by Georgia farmers have
been compiled and published Many of the items a farmer buys each year in connection with his normal
living expenses as well as farm operating expenses are included in the prices paid section

1 Details for items may not add to totals because of roundingPRICES RECEIVED BY GEORGIA FARMERS
The series of prices received by Georgia farmers presented in this bulletin provides part of a
basic set of tools for analyzing Georgia agricultural price relationships This series reflects the
average prices received by farmers at local markets The price data are collected from several
sources chiefly voluntary price reporters Price reporters are generally buyers of farm products
such as local mill and elevator operators managers of dairy plants packing house buyers and local
dealers in other types of farm products In addition some local bankers wellinformed farmers and
other persons with knowledge of prices of farm products are on the list of voluntary price reporters
The greatest part of the basic price data is collected through the use of mailed questionnaires
Reporters are generally asked to report the average price received by producers at the first point of
sale The average price concept is one which if multiplied by the total quantity of the commodity sold
would equal the total dollars received by all producers for a commodity The concept of an average
price is useful in measuring price trends computing value of farm production cash farm income as
well as other types of economic analysis
Monthly Prices
Prices received by Georgia farmers as of the 15th of each month are compiled monthly by
the Georgia Crop Reporting Service at Athens from reports made by cooperating reporters These re
ports of prices received by farmers at local markets are edited on the basis of accumulated information
summarized by crop reporting districts and combined into state average prices The prices are pub
lished monthly in mimeographed releases by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service and in printed form
by the U S Department of Agricultures Crop Reporting Board in Agricultural Prices The published
prices are estimates of the average price for the state for all grades of any particular commodity on
an as sold basis not the price of a specific grade at a common point of sale
The original monthly price received estimate for all items generally relates to sale on or about
the 15th of each month However as additional information becomes available the midmonth prices
are revised for a number of commodities to more closely reflect the average price received during
the entire month Some of the more important items which are handled this way are broilers all
chickens steers and heifers cows calves all cattle hogs peaches wholesale milk tobacco and
some other commodities Prices for these items are normally revised at the end of each year to
account for sales during the entire month
Season and Annual Average Prices
The season average price concept relates to the price received for a commodity during the entire
marketing season It should not be confused with calendar year average prices To obtain the season
average price the monthly averageprices during the crop marketing season for any particular crop
are weighted on the basis of the estimated quantity sold in each month The marketing season for any
given crop starts the first month of harvest
For livestock and livestock commodities an annual average price is computed The annual
average price for any given item is obtained by weighting the monthly state average price by the esti
mated proportion of the yearly sales sold in each monthMonthly and season average price received by farmers

PRICES PAID BY FARMERS
The first part of this bulletin has been devoted to the price received by farmers for the commodities
that he has to sell This section is devoted to the prices paid by farmers for the goods and services used
in farm production and family living There is intense interest in knowing what the farmers cost of pro
duction may be The price received for the commodities that a farmer sells only tells a part of the story
It is necessary to know the costs of production in order to determine the net income of farmers The
price received and the price paid by farmers are two very important tools in analyzing the farm situation
The average price paid by farmers for a large number of the items purchased during the year are
included in the prices paid section of this bulletin For some items this is the first time that the average
price has been published Other items are published currently in the US Department of Agricultures
printed Agricultural Prices also the regular monthly price release of this office contains prices paid
data n feed Some of the quarterly and annual average prices were published in the national Crops and
Markets publication which has been discontinued
Following the printing of this publication it is planned to begin quarterly and semiannual state
price releases for most of the major prices paid items contained in this bulletin The prices paid series
should be useful to farm economists farm managers farmers and other associated with the farm in
dustry Farmers should be especially interested in comparing present day purchase costs for items
used on the farm with costs during the past decade
The prices paid information is collected primarilly by mailed inquiries through the voluntary
cooperation of the reporters Some additional sources are used in obtaining price information The
data concerning each type of commodity is collected from dealers who handle such commodities This
means that price quotations are obtained from persons who have direct knowledge of current prices
Respondents are classified into eight broad categories one for each of the main classes of commodities
purchased by farmers The principal categories are food clothing building material farm equipment
and supplies farm machinery home furnishings automobiles auto supplies plus numerous small
classifications Farmers supply the information used in estimating the price paid for a number of items
particularly the farm wage rate
The pricecollecting procedures are directed toward the goods commonly bought by farmers On
the questionnaires commodities are described in the simplest way consistent with definite identification
Instructions request that the price in effect as of the 15th of the month for the kinds most commonly
sold to farmers be reported
The prices paid by Georgia farmers series represents the price at independent stores and does not
include chain store prices For some items particularly food there is some difference in the price at
independent and chain stores Chain store prices are collected and used on the national level along with
the independent store prices One of the primary purposes of collecting the prices paid data are for use
in computing the Prices Paid Interest Taxes and Wage Rate Index more commonly called the Parity
Index for the Nation The omission of the chain store prices on the State level does not affect the
usefulness of the data as the year to year and trend changes for both price series would be comparableYear

INDEX NUMBERS
Index numbers are devices for measuring differences in the magnitude of a group of related
variables 1 Changes in the price of an individual farm commodity can be readily observed by anyone
having a record of its average price for different periods When comparing price changes for an entire
group of items such as all farm crops for different periods the comparison becomes more difficult
Basically index numbers were developed to facilitate such comparisons and provide a measure of re
lationship between the average prices of a number of items and their average prices during other periods
As an example index numbers represent the composite of average prices for a group of items as one
index number This single index number can then be compared to a similar number or index for the
same items in a different period In general price indexes are usually employed to measure price
changes from one time to another however they also may be used to compare prices between places
or for any other purpose where a comparison is made between two magnitudes representing any difference
in circumstances2 For a description of methods used in constructing price indexes see University of
Georgia bulletin NS 29 released October 1956
