GEORGIA AGRICULTURE
The following information agriculturally
and otherwise about Georgia is issued in
response to numerous recuests for uptodate
facts concerning the State

Farming Is the oldest and has always been the leading occupa
tion of the people of Georgia
The first inhabitants of the land now comprising Georgia
Indians were its first farmers They cultivated the

planting corn and other crops to supplement their food supply of
game Corn or maize ps it as exiled

Small plats usually the bottom lands only worn cultivated
the forests being kept intact for game of which the Indians killed
only enough for their immediate needs and none for sport They
used the dead trees for firewood thus the forests were not slash
ed nor denuded The forests held practically all the water that
fell in them and the cultivated plats were not large enough to
cause much flow of water so the Indians may rightfully be called
our first soil and forest conservers
Farming as the first occupation of General Oglethorpes set
tlers at Savannah in 1733 When the town was laid out a plat was
included in each building lot and the settler thereon was required
to plant and cultivate a garden Silkworms were grown at first to
further silk manufacture and when that was found to be impractical
other major crops were grown including tobacco and rice
Cotton has been the leading money crop grown in the State
since the invention of the Cotton Gin at Savannah in 1793 by Eli
Whitney This invention caused the growth of a fiber that found
a ready market in England and at home in making cloth This plant
set the South up as an agricultural empire which position it has
since held Corn leads all crops In acreage in the State
The value of fartfl products in Georgia annually totals more
than 30000000000 and many of these when manufactured into other
products become even more valuable and afford employment for thou
sands of people Crops that are 3old for cash and pre manufactured
into other products include cotton cottonseed peanuts wheat
tobacco sugar cane made into syrup livestock dairying and
mineral or ground products includi ng timber

Two hundred textile mills which employ 85000 people and turn
out products annually valued at 250000000 lead in manufacturing
with foundry products second Georgia mills use more than 100 000
boles of cotton annually
The spindle is theunit of capacity of production in the tex
tile industry There are 150000000 spindles in the world
24943000 in the United States on December 31 1939 18309 000 in
the South 5967000 in the East North Carolina leads all states
in spindles with 5823000 South Carolina second with 5567 000
Massachusetts third with 3343000 Georgia fourth with 3222000
spindles
The total cotton crop in the United States in 1939 was esti
mated on December 8th to be 11792000 bales oooIp

said to be the only State in the Union in which all of the lrge

EDUCATION
Educational facilities are available to every child
in Georgia The 1937 session of the Legislature provided
for a minimum seven months school term and for free school
books for all pupils from the first through the High School
Grades
On June 30 1938 there ere 782047 pupils enrolled
In 6072 state schools and were taught by 22276 teachers
The University system of the State comprising 18
educational institutions is under the Board of Regents of
which Dr SV Sanford is Chancellor The University of
Georgia is located at Athens Dr Harmon W Caldwell Presi
dent The State College of Agriculture is also located at
Athens Mr Walter S Brown Extension Director Two major
Experiment Stations under the Board of Regents are the
Georgia Experiment Station Experiment Ga Griffin ana
the Coastal Plain Experiment Station Tifton Georgia
There are also many private and institutional Softools
colleges and universities in the State
The University of Georgia is the oldest chartered
State University in the United States and Wesleyan College
at Macon was the first in the nation to grant a diploma
to a woman Miss Catherine Brewer in July 1840

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
The Georgia Department of Agriculture was created by
the Legislature in 1874 Dr Thomas P Janes being the
first Commissioner The Commissioner is elected for a term
of four years He is the Executive officer of the Depart
ment which is divided into the following subdivisions
Marketing Division Fertilizer Division Food Drug De
partment Veterinary Department State Chemist and Statisti
cian
The Marketing Division was created for the purpose
of promoting proper sufficient and economical handling

fertilizer in the State and the State Chemist analyzes
fertilizer bought by farmers also other food products
The Veterinary Department supervises the livestock
dairying and poultry industries in the State
The Food and Drug Department has supervision over
Inspection of foods sold or offered for sale all eating
places all drugs and drug stores also all feedstuffs
