A s if there isn't enough to be excited about downtown, the next few months will be full of anticipation as the countdown begins for the Brand Atlanta Campaign unveiling. An initiative launched by Mayor Shirley Franklin and the Atlanta Committee for Progress (ACP), the Brand Atlanta Campaign will create a new brand and marketing strategy for Atlanta to appeal to convention attendees, visitors, businesses and residents.
The campaign is in support of Mayor Franklin's New Century Economic Development Plan and one of its main efforts is to support the creation of 60,000 jobs by 2009. The hospitality, entertainment and tourism industry, which currently generates 55,000 jobs in Atlanta, is a main target of the plan.
The initiative, launched in February 2005, utilizes extensive research conducted on the city and its hospitality and tourism assets. Recently, the first hint of the new brand was released-three words representing timeless and timely truths about the city: Optimism, Opportunity, and Openness.

The Three O's will keep everyone guessing for now, but starting in mid-October the Brand Atlanta Campaign will launch an ambassador program to engage residents in the campaign and in November will launch creative advertising and messaging. A national campaign will begin early next year and it will include resources to assist show management in boosting attendee and exhibitor attendance.

The Campaign is led by a visionary group with Mayor Franklin serving as chair and former Mayor Andrew Young serving as vice chair. The Campaign volunteer team includes representatives from city government, civic organizations and Atlanta-based businesses.
The Brand Atlanta Campaign knows that the city has a strong foundation to build on. Atlanta is diverse; it is the number one migration and visitor destination of African Americans and ranks high as a migration destination for Asian Americans and Hispanic Americans. Atlanta is well educated; it has been named the top "Brain Gaining Metro Region in the U.S." and 35% of its residents have a bachelor's degree, compared to the national average of 24%. Atlanta is young; the city is the top migration destination for Gen X'ers and the median age is 34. Atlanta is pro-business; the city has been named the #3 "Top Cities with the Most Fortune 500 Headquarters" and the #2 city for "Business Operating Cost". Finally, a lot has been invested in Atlanta; there will be $26 billion of new construction/leases by 2009 and a $6 billion airport expansion is on the way.
With all these attributes working for it, Atlanta is bound to reap significant benefits from the new brand campaign. All of Atlanta is awaiting the reveal of the brand, and the Georgia World Congress Center looks forward to incorporating it into their branding.

D owntown Atlanta is about to get a little more glamorous! Just around the corner from the Georgia World Congress Center at the intersection of Marietta and Spring Streets is the future home of the Glenn Hotel, Downtown Atlanta's first modern boutique hotel. The building was constructed in 1923 as an office building and is scheduled to open in January 2006 as the freshly renovated hotel. Proclaiming itself a combination of Miami chic and New York vogue grounded in Southern hospitality, the Glenn Hotel will add 110 rooms and suites to this growing end of downtown. Located yards away from CNN Center, Philips Arena, the Georgia Dome, Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium and new World of Coke, the city's newest hotel is situated in the perfect spot to offer accommodations to business travelers as well as tourists.
Don't be surprised if you see celebrities there as well. The Glenn has teamed up with restaurant group BED to create a restaurant combining three dining floors and a rooftop lounge with views of the downtown skyline. BED, which has opened

restaurants in Miami and New York, is known to attract celebrities for its blend of dcor, cuisine and style.
The hotel's designer rooms will have details that are sure to please any visitor. Georgia marble, local heart pine floors and furnishings that blend traditional southern style with contemporary flair will fill the building. The dcor will also include uniquely designed rugs, warm colors and photography by Atlanta artists.

I t looks more and more like an ark everyday. In fact, the transformation from broken ground in May of 2003 to completed Georgia Aquarium is just a few weeks away. On November 23, downtown Atlanta's latest attraction will open its doors to the public. Located just across the street from Centennial Olympic Park, the Aquarium has a lot to boast about.
The Georgia Aquarium will have between 100,000 to 120,000 fish, approximately twice the amount originally reported by Aquarium officials. These fish will represent over 500 different species. With names like batfish, sea goblin and bowmouth guitarfish, the assortment is sure to be fascinating. In June, a special delivery was made from Taiwan in the form of two whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean. The Georgia Aquarium will be the first outside of Asia to have a whale shark
The 460,000 square foot facility will be the largest aquarium in the world under one roof by both gallons of water and number of fish. With over 8 million gallons of marine and fresh water, the Georgia Aquarium aims to be an entertaining, educational and

scientific institution as well as a world leader in promoting efforts to conserve aquatic wildlife.
The Georgia Aquarium will be a great complement to the hospitality community in Atlanta as well as a great destination for conventioneers, visitors and residents alike.

J ust three miles north of the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlantic Station promises to be an excellent addition to any conventioneer's experience in Atlanta. Opening in October 2005, Atlantic Station is a live, work, play community offering excellent retail options for GWCC visitors. Just a quick trip down Northside Drive will offer downtown visitors everything they need. While June 29 marked the opening of the much anticipated Swedish home furnishing store IKEA, much more is on the way. Everything from Pier 1 Imports to Banana Republic to Metropolitan Deluxe, Bath & Body Works, Gap, Dillard's, DSW, West Elm, Victoria's Secret, Guess? and Old Navy.
In addition to shopping, Atlantic Station will offer extensive dining options. Claddagh Irish Pub will offer an authentic pub environment; Doc Green's has an extensive variety of gourmet salads; Tahitian Noni Caf's wholesome menu will include many items with noni, a tropical fruit with excellent health benefits; The Grape is a wine

bar for the connoisseur and novice alike; and for those who enjoy Pan-Asian cuisine there will be Mama Fu's Asian House. One of the most exciting establishments slated to open is Strip - Steaks & Sushi, which will be located in a 6,500 square-foot space in the middle of the retail and entertainment district. Opened by the owner of several popular restaurants such as Twist, Noche and Shout, Strip is sure to draw a crowd.
After shopping and dining, visitors can enjoy a flick at Atlantic Station's Regal Cinemas, take a stroll down the miles of walking paths or enjoy the lake, fountains, parks and playgrounds. Atlantic Station will also offer a boutique hotel called TWELVE. Featuring 101 one and two bedroom suites each will have a full-size kitchen, living room and private balcony. The hotel will also boast an innovative restaurant, state-of-the-art technology and a fitness center.
A 138-acre environmental redevelopment of the former Atlantic Steel Mill, Atlantic Station will offer visitors to Atlanta a new area of town to explore with unique retail, dining, hotel and entertainment options.

G WCC Recycles... Recycling efforts at the GWCC are resulting in conservation and environmental awareness on the 200-acre convention, sports and entertainment complex. The recycling program first began with office paper recycling bins over six years ago and since that time there has been great expansion of the program. The GWCC now recycles almost all the materials used in the building, with the exception of Styrofoam, wood and materials that have been contaminated with food.

different ways. Carastar is a company that recycles cardboard and mixed papers and in return provides tubes and sheetrock that is sold all over the United States. SE Paper Recycling receives old newspapers and inserts and manufactures rolled newsprint that is supplied to newspapers all over the Southeast.
Gadson and the building services staff have provided recycling receptacles all throughout the building. They continue to encourage staff and attendees to do their small part to help in this effort by placing materials in the designated containers. "Our efforts are making a huge impact on the amount of waste we just send to the landfills," said Gadson. Making recycling a priority is beneficial for everyone.

In June, the project expanded even further to include materials used on the exhibit hall floors. Wood is the only material from the exhibit floor that is currently not recycled. "We are in the process of finding another recycler that has those capabilities," said John Gadson, GWCC director of building services.
This program is a service provided to customers at no additional cost to them and very little cost to the GWCC. The materials are collected by the housekeeping department and then loaded into the designated bins. The responsibility of separating the items is taken care of by Dreamsan, Inc., the recycling partner, and they are able to complete this at their facility. Most of the items that are now recycled are being reused in a multitude of

F alcons football `05! It's a brand new season at the Georgia Dome as the Atlanta Falcons gear up for 2005. With the new season comes a host of new elements for the team and the facility. The Falcons start this season as the reigning 2004 NFC South Champions by finishing up last year with an 11 - 5 record. In addition to their new crown, the team has managed to

inherit arguably the toughest schedule in the league this season with three Monday Night games, bringing primetime attention to Atlanta and the Georgia Dome. In addition, the Falcons will spend Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Years Day out on the road playing ball.
This season, the most notable change to the Georgia Dome is the brand new, $2 million Owner's Club. This is an upscale establishment with a private lounge, complete with dark wood and granite finishes, plasma screen televisions and a game room. This exclusive club has a membership of 250 and includes lower level seats for all Falcons home games.

In addition, the Georgia Dome has made unbelievable enhancements to the Club Level of the facility. Concierge desks have been added to accommodate questions from guests and the look of both lounges has changed to provide a more football themed atmosphere. Such dining areas as the Tailgater's Grill, Pigskin Heaven and the Steakout are all designed to enhance the game day experience.

T he Georgia Dome welcomed Megafest back in early August. Conventions such as Woman Thou Art Loosed! and ManPower drew thousands back to the Dome for this year's installment of the event. Bishop T.D. Jakes and his wife Serita brought a host of spiritual leaders and celebrities with them this year, including Prophetess Juanita Bynum-Weeks, Jesse Duplantis and Mary, Mary.

Because of their empowering partnership with the Georgia Dome and the City of Atlanta, Bishop T.D. Jakes and Mrs. Serita Jakes were both honored with a commemorative plaque at the Georgia Dome in early May. The Jakes join only a handful of recipients whose plaques line the hall of the Administrative Entrance in the Dome. They shared a vision to bring people together for a celebration of spirituality. This celebration has brought over 500,000 people to the Georgia World Congress Center Authority campus. Bishop and Mrs. Jakes are regarded worldwide as two of the nation's top religious leaders, and they are also saluted as lifelong partners and friends of the Georgia Dome.

L ights OutHeavy Load. The Dome is quite versatile. It's not just about football action - conventions, basketball and competitive motor sports shows call the Dome home every year. Each show has its own requirements which often convert the Georgia Dome into a world of its own for each event, providing a unique look and unforgettable atmosphere.
One of the most fascinating elements of the Dome is the installation of the shroud. The shroud is made of thousands of

square feet of canvas material. Piece by piece it is lifted into the air to the top of the Dome. It covers the entire ceiling, creating darkness when all lights are down. It is installed to give production companies greater control of stage lighting and image magnification in the bowl for theatrics. The shroud was first used in the Dome during the 1996 Olympics and has been used regularly for the past three years. It is stored in Iowa and takes 20 riggers eight days to complete the installation!

It's not just about football action!

When MGB, a high tech corporate event, arrived at the Georgia Dome, they brought plenty of luggage with them! For nearly a week prior to their event, crew members worked day and night to install what would become the heaviest rigging in Georgia Dome history. With over 225,000 pounds of equipment strapped to the roof, event organizers put together an unbelievable show that pushed the high tech, interactive envelope.

W ednesday WindDown Centennial Olympic Park celebrates summer with free concerts every Wednesday. The Wednesday WindDown, Atlanta's longest-running free concert series, is a popular event that features everything from jazz to contemporary music performed on the Southern Company Amphitheater stage.
UPN Atlanta 69 aired the first-ever live broadcast of WindDown July 27. The live segment, from 5:30 to 6 p.m., consisted of crowd interviews and music from the Latin jazz band Taboga.
Wednesday WindDown concerts are a great reason to bypass weekday traffic and join numerous of other music lovers for free live entertainment in the Park. Local and nationally recognized jazz, R&B and blues performers like Melvin Miller and Ken Ford & Friends make up the star quality line-up every Wednesday evening.

4 th of July Celebration Centennial Olympic Park welcomed tens of thousands to Atlanta for the Park's 4th of July Celebration, downtown's biggest Independence Day party. The festivities included live music provided by The Classic Rock All-Stars and Shimmer, and a fireworks finale that launched over 3,000 fireworks into the downtown night sky. The 20-minute fireworks show used shells weighing an estimated 2.5 tons, and was set against the beautiful downtown Atlanta skyline.
The annual 4th of July Celebration attracted families and friends to the 21-acre Park, which has been the site of downtown's biggest Independence Day celebrations since 1998. 11 Alive, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Coca-Cola and Star 94
