USG COMPETITION LETS COLLEGE STUDENTS SOLVE SOCIAL ISSUES

Students at Georgia's colleges and universities seized the chance to put their knowledge to work through a recent statewide competition focused on finding business solutions to some pressing community issues such as domestic violence, adult illiteracy, healthcare and housing.

The competition was held by the USG as part of a unique "Social Business and Microcredit" economic development conference held Oct. 17 in Atlanta at Georgia Tech's Ferst Center and hosted by the USG.

The winning teams were: First place: Southern Polytechnic State University (Marietta), "Restoration Trust" Second place: Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (Tifton), "Health Clinic" Third place: Georgia Gwinnett College (Lawrenceville), "Read for Life" Fourth place: Valdosta State University, "Clean Sweep" Fifth place: Fort Valley State University, "Peach" Sixth place: Gainesville State College, "Sew Company".

Nobel Prize recipient Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who spoke to the approximately 1,200 students attending the event, said that the future of society depends on the world's youth and their engagement. "This is your age, this is your time," Yunus said. "You are the most powerful generation in the entire history of mankind."
Yunus pioneered the concept of microcredit, the extension of very small loans (microloans) to those in poverty designed to spur entrepreneurial activity.
The student competition was based upon another Yunus concept, that social problems can be solved through business models that provide a minimum profit to the business in order to sustain a project, but do not provide for individuals to personally profit from the enterprise.

"One of my goals as chancellor is to reinforce the value of college to society and individuals," said USG Chancellor Hank Huckaby. "This competition was an excellent way to showcase the critical thinking and creative talents of students and how they can take their skills and knowledge and apply to real problems here in Georgia."

In all, 38 teams made up of students from 35 USG institutions and three private colleges participated in the competition. Teams were asked to identify a social problem in the community, conduct a market analysis and develop a strategy to address the problem and prepare a social business plan based on the principles developed by Yunus.

The teams presented their proposals to judges in sessions during the Oct. 17 conference. Judges drawn from the private sector and higher education looked at the strength of each plan's business model, its financial requirements, its sustainability and the degree to which it meets the problem and generates social benefits in the community.
The winning entry, "Restoration Trust," by a team from Southern Polytechnic State University, envisions the creation of a company with a mission to improve the lives of victims of domestic violence.
This would be accomplished through a microsavings and lending program to domestic violence victims, along with access to immediate and long-term housing options, and coaching on employment, education and entrepreneurial options.
Sonal Doshi, who is pursuing a master-of-science degree in accounting at Southern Poly, worked on the plan. "A lot of research and legwork was done, not keeping the competition in mind but the social business in mind," she said. "That helped us narrow it down to the idea that we felt was the most pressing need for social business."
Another student had a more personal connection to her team's entry. "The project means a lot to me," said student Shalaya Morissette, a member of Georgia' Gwinnett College's team whose entry focused on adult literacy. Morissette's mother did not know how to read.
"It's a simple idea, but there are adults who can't perform simple tasks like reading prescription bottles or books to their children," said Morissette. "With the right resources, they will."
Looking to the future and how the social business model concept can be sustained in Georgia, Huckaby said that the University System is establishing a "Georgia Social Business Fund," to be underwritten through private and corporate donations. This entity would evaluate future proposals for funding, said Huckaby.
Two organizations already have made contributions to the fund said Mohammad Bhuiyan, 2011-2012 USG American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow, who organized the conference.
"This is a first step," Huckaby said. "This conference is part of our plan to build stronger partnerships among educational agencies and institutions, and local and state government, business, and other entities to create potential new businesses and jobs."

Chancellor Hank Huckaby at North Georgia College & State University

CHANCELLOR ENTERS LAST PHASE OF CAMPUS VISITS

Chancellor Hank Huckaby has embarked on a quest to visit all USG institutions and Skidaway institute by the end of November. Since his first visit to Georgia Tech since July, Chancellor Huckaby has visited 29 campuses, Skidaway Institute and the UGA-Griffin Campus.
In his October report to the Board of Regents, Chancellor Huckaby said, "On every campus visit, students have expressed their pride in their institution. All the students I have met have been very candid and frank. No one holds back. In many instances it is interesting is that students are asking as tough or tougher questions than faculty! When I talk to students and faculty I find that their thoughts and concerns fit the thematic outlines I put forth in the August meeting: those of performance, partnership and the value of higher education."

USG BREAST CANCER AWARENESS EVENTS 2011

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund, more than 6,000 women in Georgia are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. A number of University System of Georgia (USG) colleges and universities are doing their part to help increase public awareness of this disease.

Burns Named President of Gordon College
Posted by Sonja Roberts October 31, 2011

These efforts include partnerships with the community, between students and staff and local corporations and businesses. Such efforts help educate and prepare students to take a participatory role in society through the sharing of their time and skills. This is what Chancellor Hank Huckaby means when he talks about the values that college helps to instill in students, values that go far beyond simply preparing someone for a specific job or career.

For highlights (and where available, web links) of Breast Cancer Awareness activities occurring on USG campuses, please visit: http://www.usg.edu/breast_cancer_awareness.

MIDDLE GEORGIA COLLEGE RECEIVES CUPAHR'S FIRST-EVER COMMUNITY SERVICE AND OUTREACH AWARD
Middle Georgia College has been chosen as the first recipient of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR)'s new Community Service and Outreach Award. Rooted in CUPA-HR's ongoing commitment to service and volunteerism, the Community Service and Outreach Award was created to recognize the efforts of institutions to engage their employees through community service and outreach. Middle Georgia College received the award for its Partners in Excellence program. Thanks to the generous support of Fidelity Investments, CUPA-HR is pleased to offer a $10,000 contribution to Middle Georgia College's endowment.
The Partners in Excellence program created a partnership between Middle Georgia College employees and the local primary, elementary and middle schools to provide educational resources to strengthen student academic performance and achievement. Components of the program include a reading initiative (in which college employees visit the local primary schools once a week to read to students); a mentoring initiative (in which college employees mentor elementary and middle school students throughout the school year); and an awards initiative (in which college employees prepare and present certificates for superior academic performance and citizenship to students at the primary and elementary schools). The Partners in Excellence program has also served to provide the students of this small, rural community, many of which come from families with limited financial resources and no college education, with a connection to higher education. The partnership has drawn community-wide attention and is regularly acknowledged in the weekly local newspaper.

GEORGIA STATE LAW RANKS NUMBER ONE FOR BEST VALUE

For the second year in a row, the Georgia State University College of Law has been ranked the no. 1 best value in the country by preLaw magazine, a National Jurist publication.
"We are very pleased to be recognized once again for the quality of our program and its value. In these times in particular, students are rightfully looking for both," said College of Law Dean Steven J. Kaminshine.

Brigham Young University and Florida State University ranked second and third, respectively, behind Georgia State. Fifty-seven of the 60 schools listed on the honor roll this year are public institutions.

To identify the best-value law schools, preLaw considered a two-year average for both bar passage rates and percent of students employed after graduation. In-state tuition and average debt at graduation also factored into the rankings.

Kaminshine told preLaw that the College of Law career services office is working hard to help students secure jobs. GSU's robust externship program and location in the heart of downtown Atlanta have been assets in those efforts.

"We are proud that our law students graduate ready to practice law and without a crushing amount of debt," Kaminshine said. "It is important that our graduates are able to practice their passion without limiting their opportunities because of financial concerns. This national recognition strongly indicates we are succeeding in our core mission: to provide an outstanding legal education that is accessible and affordable."

Georgia State's College of Law was also recognized in the Princeton

Review's recently published 2012 edition of "The Best 167 Law schools."

The Princeton Review does not rank schools, but compiles its lists using

institutional data, student surveys and its own evaluation of academic

programs and offerings. The preLaw rankings can be found in the

The "txtl8r" (text later) campaign consists of a series of radio and television public service announcements and digital signage images that will be featured on campus, and will also be distributed to media around the state of Georgia. The campaign features Georgia Southern University President Brooks Keel, Ph.D., Eagles Head Football Coach Jeff Monken, University students and athletes and a professor who had to break the news of a texting and driving death to one of his classes.

"It only takes a split second for a text message behind the wheel to turn into a tragedy," said Keel. "While texting and driving is illegal in the state of Georgia, we know that thousands of young drivers engage in this potentially deadly behavior every day. With the `txt l8r' campaign, we are sending the clear message that no text is too important to wait."

Georgia Southern biology professor Lorne Wolfe, Ph.D. decided to become involved in anti-texting and driving awareness after one of his students had a relative killed in an accident where texting and driving was involved.

"I looked into this classroom filled with young people and told them that one of their classmates wasn't there because they had gone home to bury a loved one killed by texting and driving," remembers Wolfe. "As shocking and sad as that message was, I knew many of those same students would continue to text and drive."
Wolfe partnered with Georgia Southern's Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and the Office of Marketing and Communications to develop the "txt l8r" campaign. Students involved in Greek organizations, ROTC and athletic teams are featured to send the message that members of the Eagle Nation do not text and drive.

"The Georgia Southern Eagles practice safety on the field every day because we want to win," Monken states in one of the public service announcements. "I'm recruiting your support while you're driving so that we all win."

In addition to targeting Georgia Southern's 20,000 students, the public service announcements will be distributed to media around the state. Statistics by the U.S. Department of Transportation show that in 2009 distracted driving which includes texting was a factor in nearly 5,500 traffic deaths and a half million injuries. Studies show those most likely to

be killed or injured are under the age of 20, while the second most likely group is between the ages of 20 and 29.
"Our students fall into the age groups most likely to be hurt or killed by texting and driving," said Keel. "So that makes this campaign very personal for me and everyone involved. We don't want our students' great potential squandered by a moment of inattention at the wheel. The message is clear. Don't text and drive text later."
