LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
A Briefing for Faculty & Staff of the University System of Georgia

No. 1, Jan. 7, 2002

New Chancellor's First Order of Business is Legislative Session

The University System of Georgia welcomed its 10th chancellor, Thomas C. Meredith, on the eve of the opening of the 2002 session of the Georgia General Assembly.
The former chancellor of The University of Alabama System, Meredith took office on Jan. 1, after the Board of Regents conducted a five-month national

search for a successor to Stephen R. Portch.
"Meredith emerged from the selection process with the right blend of experience, vision and personality that the board felt would best suit our current needs and future plans," board Chair Hilton H. Howell Jr. said in announcing the new chancellor's appointment. "He is the

right man for the right job at the right time."
"Chancellor Meredith has a wealth of expertise from which we will benefit," said Tom Daniel, senior vice chancellor for External Affairs and Facilities, noting that Meredith's attention during his first three months in Georgia will be primarily focused on the legislative session. "Every year, the

chancellor is the key player in our push to ensure that higher education's needs are properly addressed. Chancellor Meredith is adept at working with elected officials at many levels on behalf of higher education, and I am confident that he will be a true asset for the University System in the 2002 Legislative Session."
