GPB Radio's Big Band Jump Brings Back
The Music of the Swing Era
Tune In Sundays at 6 PM
GPB Radio welcomes back an old friend on Sunday evenings, as Don Kennedy's Big Band Jump show can be heard now at 6 PM. The program focuses on the music of the Swing Era, a time when Benny Goodman, Anita O'Day, 1om my and jimmy Dorse}' Artie Shaw and man)' others created the soundtrack for the Greatest Generation. Big Band Jump is hosted by Kennedy, a Hall of Fame Georgia Broadcaster. Generations of Atlantans know Kennedy as "Oft'icer Don" on the long-running ( 1956-1970) Popeye Club kid's show on WSB TV. But Kennedy has been a busy broadcaster in the years since. He has put heritage radio stations on the air (WKLS), started Georgia's original state radio news network, and owned and managed WATL television in Atlanta.
Don Kennedy
Gene Krupa Quartet with Benny Goodman
Currently he works as a voice talent for the Cartoon Network and reads for the blind as a volunteer for GaRRS, the Georgia Radio Reading Service.
Big Band Jump has aired weekly for over 20 years on radio stations across the country and is a reflection of Kennedy's love of the music he grew up listening to in Beaver, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a home with older brothers who were musicians. His father and brothers formed and played in a group called the Kennedy Brothers Family Orchestra. ''I really dug the music then and I still do:' Kennedy ~a)'S. "There's a sensitivity to the era that can't be replaced. There was something about it that was carefree and innocent in its own way. It was also developmemal and non-technical. Back then it was music for the sake of music. Thats what really makes it endure."
GPB Radio Program Director Rob ~laynard is
happy to welcome Big Band Jump into the fold. "Don Kennedy is a Georgia broadcasting institution and a consummate professional. Music from this era is underrepresented on radio and I know that our members and members-tobe will enjoy listening to the program on Sunday
e\-enings~
Big Band Jump features various artists and themes from week to week. Recent shows have included radio show themes, a Woody Herman retrospective, The Class of 19-10, and an all request show. So if you just haven't heard much of Johnny Mercer, Keely Smith or Les Brown And His Band of Renown on your radio lately. drop in and have a listen on your locaJ GPB radio station on Sunday at 6 PM. \bu're in for a real jumping treat.

Sunday, February 3, 8 PM
You may already have noticed that since the beginning of the year Cover to Cover, our radio book dub hosted by St.john Flynn, has gone from a monthly to a weekly program. Each Sunday at SPM, St.John is joined in the studio by an author from Georgia or the South and you can call in to join the con, ersation. You can now also hear St.john each weekday at I :SOPM as part of the GPB Writer's Block as he brings a new literary feature to our air, the Cover to Cover Footnote, a fiveminute segment in which St.John talks about the literary life of Georgia. Hear it each day right before Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac. Cover to Cover now keeps you connected to Georgia books and authors six days a week. Tunc in for the tirst of this month's Sunday authors, Febntary 3 at SPt-1, when St.john welcomes Atlanta's Shclia ~loses to talk and take calls about her new young adult novel, The Baptism, the story of 12year-old twins who must prepare for baptism, if they can stay out of trouble!
In Atlanta, tunc rour tcbision to Georgia Public Broadcasting/Olannel8 and switch your tde, ision to the SAP channel to listen to GPB Radio.
