sudaenly became dependent on the very

people they were risking their lives to

liberate. The film Papa said, "We should

Wednesday, November 5 at 8 PM on

GPB Television, captures this true story

of some of World War II 's unlikeliest

heroes, including M arthe Rigault, a young

girl who, with her family and fellow

villagers, pur their lives on the line to

assist the Allied soldiers in th e fight for

freedom .

D -D a;, story through the eyes of a child,' D ruckenmiller says.
The film is rold fro m the perspective of Marthe, one of three young sisters in the family.
"Because of my work in co-producing the original PBS film on the 507 th Parachute Infa ntry Regiment, I was asked to produce the new film ," Druckenmiller says. "This was a daunting request to say the least given the enormi ty of the task! Who was I to assume that I could collapse the story of the entire D-Day invasion into one 25 minute short for a young audience?"
The film was shot entirely on location in Normandy, France with much of the filmin g done in and around the actual village of Graignes

Earlier this year, G PB hosted a screening of the project with filmmaker David Druckenmiller, who served as producer, director and eclitor. Druckenmiller also served as co-producer and co-director for the ftlm D-Day: Down to Earth - Return of the 507th that was broadcast nationally by PBS in 2004.
Interest in developinf? Papa said, "We should never forget. began with the Museum of Aviation Flight and Technolosr Center in Warner Robins. The film IS shown dai ly in the museum's new 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment and Air Invasion of Normandy exhibit.
The film 's narrative is based on the book manuscript, "Silk From the Sky," by D r. Eric Groce, a professor in the D epartment of Curriculum & Instruction at Appalachian State University.
"Since the primary audiences to regularly visit the museum are elementary and middle school kids, it was the museum 's educational department who came up with the idea to tell the

"After some serious soul searching, I was drawn back to the previous work on the 507th and the story of the small village of Graignes," D ruckenmiller says. "It is a dramatic acco unt in which American soldiers and French citizens collabo rate in such a way that you can not help but inject yourself into the story, either as a paratrooper or a French villager and ask, 'What would I have done if this happened to me?' ."
For D ruckenmiller, being on the ground in Normandy where the story actually rook place was an increclible experience, and he hopes that viewers who see the film on GPB and at the museum can fully appreciate the im pact of the real-life characters' actions.
"I kept asking myself, 'Am I really here doing this? It hits yo u hard al l of the sudden that this was no 'story,' it was real. It actually happened . People pu t their lives on the line for the cause of freedom, and because they did in Graignes, in Normandy and al l over Europe, I can stand here today."

N
Adventure with an
Environmental Message

G eorgia Outdoors is celebrating its 1Jlh season with a brand new slate ofshows and more exciting adventures across the state. Executive Producer Keely Walker Muse, who has been with the show for nine years, spoke with experience about what it's like behind the scenes.

Tuesdays 7:30PM

Fridays Saturdays
9:30PM I 6PM

experience: How did you become
involved with the show?
Keely: I was or i~in al l y hired to be the program's assoctate producer and editor. I turned 25 that week and I was ecstatic to be working on longer-form programming for public broadcasting!
eA.'J>erience: How is working on this
production different from other shows, and do you have a favorite experience from a shoot?
Keely: Well, working on this show requires that you be fit, not afraid of creep crawlies, and not afraid to get dirty. Some days we traipse back into the office with mud to our ears. T he other program photographers don't want to lend us their gear b/c we're likely to get it muddy and sweaty. But we also get a lot of comments from people who think we have the best job in the world and many days they are right!
eA'J>erience: What do you think is the
most difficult experience you've had trying to put a show together?
Keely: My favorite shoot, and our most difficult shoot ever, was in South Geor~ia where we explored a cave called Blowmg Hole. South Georgia is not where you would think it likely to find a cave so this was special. A video crew had never been in ir before. We entered the cave wirh our guides and a stare

biologist at about 7 AM. We climbed down through an area call rhe corkscrew, then through another area called rhe birth canal-- so you can guess how right that was!- then crawled on our stomachs through a maze of switchbacks pulling our gear- which was attached to our ankles-- along behind us! But when we stood up in rhe main area of the cave it was astounding. White "angel wing' formations all around us. Ir was worth ir! By the way, we left the cave at well past midnight. Inside rhe cave we couldn't reil the sun was down!
experience: How many people does ir
take to pur the show together?
Keely: For this laresr season I worked with a crew of abour four including me. For the last three years I've wo rked with an amazing producer named Brandon Arnold. He is larsely responsible for the programs premienng rhis fall and he won an Emmy last year for rhe Georgia Outdoors: Citizen Science episode. There is also an associate producer whose job is to produce segments for the shows, some ed iting and some writing. We tend to have an annual rotation of production assistants who are usually recent graduates with a dream to work on nature films. The photographers who work on Georgia Outdoors mostly come from the pool of photographers on staff here ar GPB . AJI this said, we usually only have two, and maybe three people if we're lucky, our on a given shoot. We're a small shop with a lot of tenacity and a talent at work-arounds.

experience: With the increased
awareness of environmental issues, what can people learn from the show?
Keely: Well, we were producing a "green" show before green was cool. Our website has a backlog of over 125 programs all of which are viewable on the web. Most have additional web resources list on each episode page with links to the places we've been ana programs we highlighted. We gauge the success of each show nor just by ratings bur by web visits and emai ls. I just love answering emai l from viewers because if they've been inspired enough by a show to write to us about it they may well have been inspired enough to give rhe activity we've featured a go! That's our goal-- to introduce people to rhe outdoors. If they fil l in love with it they will respect it and become good stewards.
eA'J>erience: Can you explain more
about the role of the Geo rgia Department of Natural Resources in the show?
Keely: They are a wonderful partner for this program. I know so many of the biologists and rangers and rublic information officers so wei now. I can pick up the phone and call just the right person to get the right answer. They are really tunea in to what's happening out there right now and what's new. They love the pr<?gram and go to great lengths to support tt.

Research shows that while all young children have knowledge about everyday arithmetic, language skills can be a barrier for them to explain their mathematical thinking . This language deficit may be one reason why low-income children generally perform lower on tests of mathematical abilities than middle-income children. To address this gap, this season Sesame Street is putting mathematical reasoning into words.
"The amount of 'math talk' children are exposed to during the preschool years directly correlates with their future understanding of mathematical language and concepts ," comments Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, Vice President of Education and Research, Sesame Workshop. "This season 's curricular focus is designed to help children put their mathematical thinking into words and talk about how they solve problems."

This season features new "street" scenes designed to expand a child's mathematic vocabulary. For example: Max the Magician (played by Will Arnett) performs tricks for Rosita, Elmo, Big Bird and Chris. In the end , Chris reveals that it's not magic that he's performing, but it's all math!

When a case of Mine-itis breaks out, NBC's Brian Williams reports from the trenches of
the neighborhood on the Sesame Street Nightly News Update.

"Sesame Street has been helping children learn to count from day one, but this year we delve deeper into math principles. Of course we do it the Sesame way, with humor and references to pop culture," add Carol Lynn Parente, Executive Producer.

Grey's Anatomy star Sandra Oh is Cookie Monster's Cookie Fairy and has the "cookie
touch" as part of the 39th season.

Parents and caregivers will be laughing along with their children as the new season features hilarious segments with A-list celebrities including Will Arnett, Feist, Jessica Alba, David Beckham, Heidi Klum, Brian Williams, Neil Patrick Harris, Sandra Oh, Jack Black, Jenny McCarthy, Feijoo Sisters and Jason Taylor. Sesame Street continues in its play on pop culture with all new parodies including: "30 Rocks ," "Pre-School Musical" and "Are You Smarter Than an Egg Layer."

Ab's Place Holds The Fort For Straight Ahead Jazz Overnight On Weekends on GPB

As a part of a number of programming changes on GPB Radio recently, we have a new program airing overnight Saturdays and Sundays. Ab's Place is hosted by Abdul Taymullah, who has hosted an Atlanta-area jazz program on legendary Atlanta jazz station WCLK 91.9 FM for nearly 20 years .
Ab's Place is a straight ahead jazz show with emphasis on the emerging artists whose musical expression is based in the straight ahead genre-defined by the music created by such mid-period greats as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Dexter Gordon. Ab's Place will also have artist profiles and artist features as the show takes shape .
According to Taymullah, "Ab's Place is all about providing music that is educational and

entertaining . I hope that all of GPB's listeners will enjoy the jazz on Ab's Place , but in particular I want the show to provide new energy for all of the folks across the state that are working in the wee hours. "
Ab's Place airs on GPB Radio overnights Saturday and Sunday, Midnight to 6 AM . As Abdul himself points out , "there's always something happening at Ab's Place ."
Ab's Place is part of the growing GPB Jazz Community, anchored by The Jazz Spot with Masani, Marian McPartland 's Piano Jazz and Big Band Jump with Don Kennedy. GPB Radio is committed to jazz, the great American art form. If you have questions or comments about our jazz programming , drop us a line at jazz@gpb.org.

At Work With Emory Mulling Provides

Answers To Career Questions

At Work with Emory Mulling recently celebrated its first year on GPB Radio. The program airs weekly on Fridays at 3 PM and is a live interactive talk show in which GPB members and listeners can speak live with our knowledge expert Emory Mulling and ask questions about how to succeed in your current job or even find a better job. Emory is joined in the studio by Cheryl Ayers. Kevin Sanders and Myriam Levee round out our live production team for At Work. Mulling and Ayers are both career placement professionals who spend most of their days helping individuals achieve success in their jobs or job searches, and they want to help you with the same. Recent topics on the program have included how to look for a job in a down economy, how to handle conflict in the office , and scary boss stories (for Halloween). Emory Mulling 's advice is simple and to the point, and the show tries to make common sense while keeping

a sense of humor about what is often the most critical decision you can make-what to do to make your career a successful one.
Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Ron Jackson joined At Work for a discussion with Emory Mulling about whether or not you need a university degree to get a good job, and Attorney Brent Wilson dropped by to discuss the changes in EEO regulations that will affect everyone
in their office. You can listen to At Work on demand and participate via
blog by going to www.gpb.org/atwork. If you have a suggestion for a topic for the show, please email us at atwork@gpb.org. To call the show live, dial 866-RADIO-GA, 866-7234642.
At Work takes the first Friday of each month off so that GPB listeners can take advantage of consumer advice on the Consumer Call In Show.

GPB Radio, GMEA and The
Met Bring Added Opera
Coverage and Opportunities to
Georgia Opera Buffs
GPB and the Georgia Music Educators Association, GMEA, have partnered with the Metropolitan Opera to bring together Opera lovers, the 'Met, and high technology. Throughout the Met's performance season of 2008-2009, music lovers will be able to attend eleven productions simulcast in high definition in movie theaters throughout Georgia. GPB and GMEA are collaborating to provide an opportunity for Georgia music educators and their students to participate in a project that combines the best resources of one of America's finest cultural institutions with new technology that brings The Metropolitan Opera to your hometown. GPB Radio and Education are offering complimentary sets of tickets to GMEA members and their students to attend the high-definition performances throughout the season at selected movie theaters in Georgia. Participation in this project supports Georgia's State Education Curriculum Standards.
