Snapshots of a Great Year
2003/04 Report To Our Members

GPB Annual Accomplishments

James M. Lyle, Executive Director Georgia Public Broadcasting

t has become a tradition for us at Georgia Public Broadcasting to end the fiscal year with a report on the previous year for our "stockholders." As a member and financial supporter of GPB, you are extremely important to us and to the success of our enterprise. We want you to feel confident of our stewardship of your money and your belief in public broadcasting. I hope this overview of the many programs and services that your contributions support provides you with an increased awareness of our work as well as our value to our many communities.
Last year we talked about our commitment to developing content across all platforms, a commitment we have continued to expand this year. As part of that philosophy, the consolidation of our service divisions' names GPTV, Georgia Public Radio and PeachStar Education Services was a natural development, and more representational of the organization's services and scope. On January 1, we became Georgia Public Broadcasting: Television, Radio and Education. GPB is your PBS station serving all of Georgia; your source for great music and award-winning NPR news; and Georgia educators' source for the highest quality multiple media educational products and services.

Community Service...
Every year, GPB staff seeks ways to enhance our program service through community events and involvement, expanding the message of our broadcast services through activities as varied as connecting families of Alzheimer's patients with local community resources to ensuring that GPB viewers and listeners have a chance to be a part of a national PBS production to helping Georgians find jobs.
Antiques Roadshow: Savannah!
Who hasn't seen Antiques Roadshow - PBS's most popular primetime series and thought "If Antiques Roadshow ever came to town, I'd take..." Last summer when Roadshow kicked off its 2003 production tour in Savannah, more than 6000 Georgians were there with their very own treasures. When the series premiered, Roadshow producers devoted three triumphant hours to the "Hostess City of the South." It was the culmination of a vibrant partnership between Roadshow producers at WGBH/Boston, Georgia Public Broadcasting and the Savannah community, who once again demonstrated its legendary hospitality. From getting the word out to listeners and viewers, to working with community partners to providing the

nearly 100 volunteers required to pull off the event, Antiques Roadshow counted on GPB and our ties to the Savannah community. GPB members from the coastal area and volunteers from our community partners Armstrong Atlantic State University, the Georgia Historical Society, Savannah Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Telfair Museum of Art made sure the event ran smoothly. Just before the broadcast premiere, GPB partnered with the Telfair Museum of Art and the Savannah College of Art & Design to give coastal Georgians a sneak peak at the Savannah Roadshow programs and GPB's behind-thescenes special, the first of its kind ever - with special screenings,
hosted by popular Antiques Roadshow Appraiser Nicholas M. Dawes.
Job Fair
Georgians around the state took advantage of the 11th Annual Job Fair a partnership between GPB and the Georgia Department of Labor designed to help Georgia citizens find jobs. This year, the project expanded to include not only the two-hour TV show, but also a live call-in radio program, a live internet chat room and a live webcast. Georgians across the state tuned in to learn invaluable information on employment opportunities as well as specific information about the best employment resources, free education programs and the latest tips on job hunting. Over the course of the afternoon, DOL volunteers took calls from more than 2300 viewers!

Consumer Call-In Series
From investment scams to guarding against identity theft, this monthly radio series explores ways Georgians can protect themselves and their families, as well as gives listeners the opportunity to call in their questions to some of our state's most knowledgeable consumer experts, including Public Service Commission Chairman Robert Baker, Secretary of State Cathy Cox and John Smith, head of the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs.
Lifeline to Health
It's often hard for minorities and the medically underserved populations in Georgia to learn about health resources available to them, but this monthly call-in show on GPB Radio tries to fill that void. In partnership with the Georgia Office of Minority Health, WCLK 91.9 FM in Atlanta, and the Office of Technology Policy and Programs at the Georgia Center for Advanced Telecommunications Technology, this GPB program features health and fitness news and features on timely health issues.

Georgia's Children...
Georgia Public Broadcasting continued to serve Georgia's educational community and Georgia's children through a variety of services, initiatives and technologies.
Ready to Learn M Parents count on GPB as their source for educational, nonviolent, non-commercial children's programming, from classics like Sesame Street celebrating its 35th anniversary this year

The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer's
When the PBS special The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer's aired, GPB broadcast a toll-free number that viewers could call for more information about local resources. In GPB's studios, members of the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association responded to over 400 callers seeking help and advice. The Alzheimer's Association continued to receive calls generated by the broadcast, and is partnering with GPB again when The Forgetting encores this month. "The Alzheimer's Association was ecstatic about the results of our partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting," said Jan Bequeath, President and CEO of the Alzheimer's Association, Georgia Chapter. "There was real synergy, widespread outreach and hands-on work with the community; and ultimately that is part of our goal, to help people."

to newcomers like Boohbah! Seven days a week, GPB is a safe haven for Georgia's children... broadcasting over 3,000 hours of educational and entertaining children's programs a year. GPB Education staff continued to enhance the television service by presenting workshops statewide for parents and caregivers that explore how public television can be used to promote literacy and ensure that children are Ready to Learn (RTL). This year, GPB Education increased its team of RTL trainers statewide and also conducted a meeting of the regional consultants at GPB.
Celebrating Literacy Month In September, GPB and Georgia's First Lady Mary Perdue celebrated literacy through two on-air spots promoting reading. Featuring Mrs. Perdue and her twin granddaughters Sunni and Mary Kate, the spots continue to air on GPB Television and Education's satellite networks in support of our Share a Story initiative.
Share a Story with Caillou As part of its Share a Story outreach initiative, Georgia Public Broadcasting presented three performances of Storytime with Caillou an interactive stage show featuring singing, dancing and stories with the lovable, animated lead character from the popular PBS Kids program Caillou as part of Augusta's 15th Annual Children's Week.

News and
Public Affairs...
GPB continues to tell the stories of the people and places that make our state unique. This year, several national programs prompted local companion pieces that were equally compelling:
American Valor & Georgia Valor PBS's American Valor program told the story of the Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, and as a companion to the national special, GPB created Georgia Valor, focusing on our state's Medal of Honor winners. Some 34 Georgians have earned the Medal of Honor; fewer than six are still living. GPB captured some of their stories.

(This year's Conversation programs also included Sam Nunn and Max Cleland.)

Keith Harrell: Attitude is Everything for Success Over 200 people packed the GPB studios to hear Atlanta's own Keith Harrell, author and motivational speaker. Harrell outlined enlightening, inspiring and practical guidelines for viewers to gain control of their life and career. The show proved popular during GPB's winter and spring membership drives, and is slated for national broadcast later this year.
Dr. Wayne Dyer: The Power of Intention with Dr. Dyer live in the GPB studios Public television's favorite teacher of transformational wisdom returned to the GPB studios to introduce his new program, in which he focused on a new definition of the concept of intention.
Love & Logic with Jim Fay In this GPB Education production, behavior expert Jim Fay spoke to an audience of parents and educators about disciplining children without losing their love or respect. The resulting special aired both on the GPB Education network and GPB Television.
