Georgia Student Mock Election Receives

National Recognition
by Stephanie Caywood

Georgia Secretary of State Cathy Cox returned from Washington, D.C. recently with a national award sure to make Georgia students and educators proud. The 1998 Georgia Student Mock Election state program received the Time/NASBE Award for Outstanding Leadership In Voter Education, sponsored by Time Magazine and the National Association of State Boards of Education.
Last fall, students from around the state participated in mock election activities sponsored by their local schools and coordinated statewide by the Georgia Department of Education. In late October hundreds of thousands of Georgia students cast votes using special ballots prepared by the Georgia Secretary of State's Office. Students voted for the actual candidates who ran for statewide offices in the 1998 General Election, and they voiced their opinions on several timely issues included on the ballot. The results of the statewide voting were announced October 28 on Student

Voices 1998: Mock Election, produced by PeachStar Education Services and broadcast statewide, live on Georgia Public Television. The program featured lively political discussions among students from high schools in Athens, Atlanta, Columbus, Cordele, Danielsville, Ellijay, Savannah, Swainsboro and Valdosta. More than 200 students from the metro Atlanta area made up our studio audience, and they also participated in the discussions. Bill Nigut, WSB-TV's political reporter and host of GPTV's Georgia Week in Review, hosted the live event, which was funded by a generous grant from the UPS Foundation secured by the Georgia Council for the Social Studies.
Student Voices 1998 was the first joint effort by the three sponsoring organizations: the Georgia Department of Education, the Georgia Secretary of State's Office and Georgia Public Broadcasting's PeachStar Education Services Division. PeachStar looks forward to playing on that winning team many times in the future.

SALSA: More Programs, New Ideas
Twelve programs have been added to SALSA, PeachStar's award-winning Spanish language and culture series for young learners. The new video lessons expand the language base and cultural awareness of children who viewed the initial 30 programs. Each of the 12 videos is 30 minutes long and features the proven, highly creative mix of puppets, animation and live action that has made SALSA a big success.
The latest episodes are divided into two story arcs, "Jack and the Cornstalk" and "The Three Little Pigs." Familiar SALSA puppet characters, Chivo Pequeno, Ratoncito, Monstruo and others, play their parts to the hilt in these adventures. Young viewers will have additional opportunities to learn more about everyday life in today's Spanish-speaking world, as each new SALSA episode includes a video post card that introduces children to the lives of their peers in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Honduras. An Activity Guide to accompany the new programs will be available soon.
In mid-January the SALSA National Task Force met in Atlanta to decide the future direction of the series. One goal is to begin formulating a plan for future episodes to meet the needs of older children. As plans are finalized they will be announced in Pipeline.

Before You Call ...
Many PeachStar users call our Video On Request line to ask for a blockfeed of a program or series, only to find that the material the.y need is already scheduled on Channel 430. Check the 430 schedule in each Pipeline -- You might save yourself a call.

Student Video Productions Aired Statewide by PeachStar

Many Georgia schools have video production equipment and super-creative students who know how to use it. Unfortunately, high quality student productions usually are seen only by a small number of faculty and classmates.
Now PeachStar is providing a forum to allow student video meisters an opportunity to show off their video masterpieces to every school in the state, via the PeachStar Satellite Network. Beginning March 16, PeachStar will set aside a one-hour block, from 2-3 PM every Tuesday on Channel410, to air the best of the student video productions submitted to us.
The videos don't even have to be Oscar-quality (although we expect many will be) in order to be aired. We are inclined to let PeachStar viewers judge

for themselves the merit of each production. We only ask that the following guidelines be observed.
1. Productions must be submitted by the student's school, rather than directly by the student. Include school's name, contact person and phone number.
2. Each production must include a typed synopsis of the tape's content.
3. Productions should be fully edited and ready to air.
4. Productions should be in good taste. 5. Acceptable formats are Beta, 3/4" or
VHS. Be sure used tapes have been totally erased before your new material is recorded and sent to us. 6. Productions should have a slate at the head of the tape. Slates should

include school's name, title of production, and length of production. 7. Both the student who produced the video and his or her parent or guardian must sign a statement giving PeachStar permission to air the production as often as PeachStar deems appropriate. Phone Sharon McNeal at (404) 685-2565, and she will fax you an application form to send in with each video submitted. The form will include the permission statement. You can also e-mail Sharon at <smcneal@gpb.org> or fax to (404) 685-2556. At the end of each school year, PeachStar staff will don our critics' hats, and we will select the "Best Student Production of the Year." There may even be a prize! Stay tuned.

lrasshai Students Excel on the Fast Track
With the transition to block scheduling this term, Irasshai students at Carrollton High School, Carrollton, Georgia, completed Japanese I in the first semester with four A:s and two B's --exceptional grades under any circumstance but outstanding considering the amount of material these students learned in one semester. According to Clare Seaton, Distance Learning Facilitator at Carrollton for the last eight years, the students, now taking Japanese II, are progressing well and are expected to report similar achievement at year end.
"We move very fast, but the students enjoy the challenge," said Seaton of her six students currently enrolled in Irasshai, a two-year distance learning course in Japanese language and culture. Designed by a task force of Japanese language and distance learning experts, Irasshai's flexible format makes it effective for schools following either a traditional schedule or a block schedule of any type. Schools in 18 states including Georgia are enrolled this year, and approximately 25 percent of the Irasshai schools use some form of block scheduling.
The Irasshai instructional package includes video lessons, textbooks, a web site and Audio Interaction (AI). AI allows students to practice language skills by conversing with a native Japanese speaker by phone twice a week. "My students love AI and look forward to the sessions with Katsumi-sensei," says Seaton, referring to veteran Irasshai teacher Katsumi Suzuki, one of more than 30 telephone instructors who practice conversation with Irasshai students across the nation.
"We won the State AA Championship in football this year," says Seaton, "and with all the pep rallies and assemblies, we got behind with one lesson. Katsumi-sensei really worked with us, and the students caught up in no time." No doubt, Seaton's Irasshai students will carry forth the Carrollton High School winning tradition of high achievers.
See related article on this page for news about Irasshai registration for next school year.
Funding Technology in Education
On March 8- 9 Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) and the Georgia Center for Advanced Telecommunications Technology (GCATT) will host the second annual conference on Funding Sources for Technology in Education. The conference offers information on how to take advantage of more than $40 billion available this year for procurement of educational technology.
Officials from the U.S. departments of Education, Commerce and Agriculture; the Federal Communications Commission; Georgia state agencies; and private foundations will provide information. In addition, attendees will receive individual counseling, technical help and hands-on assistance with web-based grant opportunity searches.
The conference is free. Clark Atlanta University and Georgia Tech are the organizing sponsors. For registration information phone (404) 880-6234 or (404) 894-8445.

Early Bird Registration
Offer Good Through May 15, 1999
lrasshai, a two-year college-prep sequence in Japanese language and culture for high school credit, has a special free enrollment opportunity for schools interested in offering Japanese I & II in the 1999-2000 school year. Schools taking advantage of "Early Bird Registration" by May 15 will receive one free student enrollment in Irasshai with paid enrollments of 4 or more students. Georgia schools can enroll in Irasshai, either Japanese I or Japanese II, at a rate of $350 per student. The national rate is $500 per student.
Facilitators of Irasshai need no background in Japanese and are encouraged to learn the language along with their students at no additional charge. The video lessons are available to students nationwide via the PeachStar Satellite Network or by purchase of video tapes. In addition, facilitators and Irasshai students receive a student textbook, twice-weekly conversation practice by telephone with a native Japanese speaker, and access to a web site offering a myriad of additional study opportunities.
Call the PeachStar Foreign Language Hotline at 800-222-6006, Ext. 2554, and ask for the "1999-2000 Early Bird Registration Information."

Celebrating Music in Our Schools
PeachStar's Theme Packetfor March
Did you know that music education improves linguistics, raises SAT scores, and enhances spatial temporal reasoning? It's all true, according to The National Association for Music Education, the organization that founded Music in Our Schools Month, which, of course, is March.
To stimulate and encourage your budding Beethovens and would-be Whitney Houstons, PeachStar has planned an exciting lineup of programming recognizing music and the many contributions it makes to society and to our individual lives.
The popular World's Largest Concert series returns with more orchestras and student bands. NOTE: PeachStar will present both the 1998 and 1999 Concerts.
Two new series debut: Amazing Music, an overview of jazz and orchestral music, and Profile of a Performing Artist, short biographies of three musicians.
Drawing from our rich video library, PeachStar also will air these familiar favorites:
Georgia Stories I episode #110, "Singing the Blues" Georgia Stories II episode #116, "The Music Industry" Count On It! episode #19, "Blossom & Snappy Learn About Music" Mary Lou Williams: Music On My Mind Jazzmakers Exploring the World ofMusic
To learn more about The National Association for Music Education and Music in Our Schools Month, check out their web site at <www.menc.org>.
