1999 PeachStar Program Screenings

It's show time! The 2nd Annual PeachStar Program Screening is about to begin. You should have received your informational packets by now; if not, call us, and we'll send one right away, because we want all Georgia educators to participate in this year's screening.
Most states have small selection committees that choose new instructional television programs they want their state to purchase. But in Georgia, we have invited every classroom teacher, media specialist, principal and central office administrator in the state to join in the process.
Beginning January 25 and running until February 17, we will broadcast 70 preview programs for you to view. (Each program will be aired four times for your convenience.) Then you'll have the opportunity to vote electronically for your favorites using the Internet.
Inside your packets you will find the

schedule, program descriptions, your password, instructions on how to vote electronically plus a sample staff development plan to use as is or modify to fit your system's requirements.
This year we are adding another component to our viewing and voting. We want to know if you would like us to continue leasing rights to our current programs, and we want to know if there are topics of interest to you that are not addressed by our current programming. These questions are included on the evaluation form.
Based on the results of last year's screening, PeachStar purchased 236 hours of quality instructional video that is being used in Georgia classrooms this school year. You decided what to buy, we bought it, and now you are using it for free! Make sure your school is represented in this year's program screening, and get out there and VOTE!

January Theme Packet --
PeachStar Visits the Capitol
This month PeachStar takes Georgia students on video field trips under the Gold Dome. Celebrate our beautiful, historic Capitol building by tuning in to these programs: Georgia Capitol Museum (January 11, 2:30PM) Georgia Capitol Restoration (January 11, 2 PM) The People's House (January 14, 2 PM)
Students can learn more about the workings of state government by watching special airings of two episodes from PeachStar's popular Georgia history series, Georgia Stories. Episodes #112 & 113 ("State and Local Government, Parts 1 & 2") will air consecutively beginning at 2 PM on January 13.
PeachStar also will present a special presentation of GPTV's Lawmakers covering the opening of the General Assembly at 2 PM on January 12. Finally, students in classrooms across Georgia can watch the inauguration of our new Governor, Roy Barnes. (The date and time will be announced in early January on the PeachStar Bulletin Board.)
All of the above programs will be aired on PeachStar's Channel410.

PeachStar Presents
The Georgia Staff Development Council's Satellite Academy
Timely Topics in Education - A Professional Development Series

PeachStar Education Services is collaborating with the Georgia Staff Development Council (GSDC) to bring Timely Topics in Education, a quality professional development series, to every educator in Georgia. The programming is video-based and satellite-delivered enabling educators to meet their recertification requirements without having to leave the work site. A sample staff development plan for one SDU and a facilitator's guide will be mailed upon receipt of registration. Sites may tape sessions and retain one copy for use at the downlink site until the end of the academic year.
The Timely Topics series is a three-part package. The entire series or individual topics may be purchased.
Topic 1 -- Preventing School Violence -- Crisis Management for Education Leaders Broadcast Dates: February 15, 16, 17, 18 (Mon.-Thurs.) 3:30-4:30 PM each session Fee: $100 (per downlink site)
School Violence is content presented at a recent conference sponsored by the Georgia Human Relations Commission. The four one-hour sessions include keynote speakers, panel discussions and workshop presentations on ways educators can prevent school violence or provide a coordinated response to emergency events.
Topic 2 -- Sexual Harassment -What is it? How to prevent it? Broadcast Dates: February 23, 24 (Tues. & Wed.) 3:30-4:30 PM each session Fee: $75 (per downlink site)
Sexual Harassment consists of content first presented as a live teleconference to teachers and administrators in the Fulton County School System. Fulton County has generously shared with GSDC an edited version of that program which is applicable to all school systems throughout Georgia. The two one-hour sessions define sexual harassment, use interesting vignettes as examples of inappropriate behavior, and demonstrate effective techniques for administrators confronted with a sexual harassment complaint. The focus is on conduct between adult employees.
Topic 3 -- Staff Development and Student Achievement -- Making the Connection in Georgia Schools Broadcast Date: February 25 (Thurs.) 3:30-4:30 PM Fee: $75 (per downlink site)
Staff Development is a report from the Council for School Performance which highlights effective practices that positively impact student achievement. The one-hour session will aid those interested in planning school-based staff development activities and will highlight "best practices."

SALSA and lrasshai Continue to Grow

PeachStar has been extremely busy this year answering your questions about SALSA and Irasshai. Here are updates on the two popular distance learning language and culture series.
SALSA, PeachStar's Spanish language and culture series for young children, is being used and enjoyed by a growing number of elementary schools in Georgia and the rest of the country. Since the beginning of this school year, PeachStar has mailed out more than 950 information packets and tapes to interested schools. More than 200 schools in Georgia have ordered new SALSA Activity Guides. All 50 states have requested information about the series, and schools and districts in Alaska, California, Florida, Kentucky, Michigan, Oregon, New Jersey and South Carolina have actually purchased materials and are now using SALSA in their classrooms. Find out more about SALSA by calling (800) 222-6006, Ext 2554.
Irasshai, PeachStar's high school Japanese course, is also expanding. Not

only does the course serve students and schools in 17 states including Georgia, Irasshai now is used by AKEI Corporation, a Japanese-owned company in Vancouver, Washington. AKEI's training manager says lrasshai gives employees an opportunity to learn Japanese in a way that is convenient for them and cost effective for the company.
Another measure of the quality of Irasshai: In November the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) named Irasshai the nation's "Best Instructional Television Program for Secondary Schools." In the world of instructional video, the NETA award is among the most coveted and prestigious of all, and this is another indication of PeachStar's growing reputation as a national leader in the production and delivery of effective foreign language programming.
Schools and businesses can register for Irasshai now. For information call PeachStar's Foreign Language Hotline (800) 222-6006, Ext 2554.

ALS Rights Information

There is good news in the form of

updated information regarding Adult

Learning Service (ALS) programming. As

many Georgia teachers know, ALS pro-

vides excellent supplemental video

resources for use in the classroom or for

staff development. Schools have the

right to record and preview ALS offer-

ings for seven days. After that, schools

that decide to use any of the program-

ming in any way must pay a fee to pur-

chase a site license from ALS. The good

news is that this site license is good for

your school for life! This new informa-

tion may be just what you need to per-

suade your administration to invest in

this valuable programming.

If your school or system is not able to

purchase ALS programming, then you

might want to seek funding from your

PTA/PTOs, your school's partners in

education, or local civic groups. Many

times in the past such organizations

have helped schools throughout Georgia

to purchase instructional video

resources.

For an exhaustive listing of ALS pro-

grams, including descriptions and asso-

ciated fees, go to your school media cen-

ter and see pages 17-20 of the PeachStar

Program Guide.

Transitions Reminder
As noted in last month's Pipeline, Transitions, a series designed to help high school students succeed in a college environment, premieres in January. Over the coming months 10, 30-minute programs will be presented on PeachStar. A web page, a student activities packet, and an instructors guide are also available. Transitions is informative and designed to engage the attention of today's students.
On Friday, January 22, from 1:30-3 PM, the series will kick off with a live teleconference on PeachStar's Channel410. The program will explain the goals and content of the series, and there will be a question and answer session. The first two regular episodes of Transitions will be aired in early February. Check the listings on page seven of this Pipeline for dates, times and program titles.

Explorer Wins Honors, Too
PeachStar's newest foreign language and culture series is Irasshai Explorer, a middle school resource that can be used to introduce students to the Japanese language or to enhance a social studies unit in Asian Studies. Like all PeachStar productions, Explorer's core video lessons are supplemented by extensive print materials. Executive Printing, Inc., an Atlanta firm, has awarded the Executive Choice Award to Explorer. Jeff Messersmith, Account Executive for Executive Printing, said the award is given for excellence in design and print reproduction.
Brand new this school year, Irasshai Explorer already is in use in a number of Georgia middle schools and in schools as far away as New York and Hawaii. Schools interested in Explorer should call our Foreign Language Hotline, 1800-222-6006, Ext. 2554. This exciting resource also is available for purchase at the GPTV Store of Knowledge in Atlanta's Lenox Square.
PBS TeacherSource
The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has launched TeacherSource, a comprehensive new web site for educators. Visit the site for PBS program highlights and descriptions, lesson plan ideas, background resources, grant information, chat rooms for teachers, and information for child care providers and kids.
The site is conveniently divided into subject areas (Arts and Literature, Health and Vocation, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science), so teachers will have an easy time finding information and resources specifically of interest to them. The TechKnow section will be of special interest to media specialists, technology coordinators and others who want to understand, among other things, what digital broadcasting means for education and the possibilities this will bring -and already is bringing in Georgia -- to education.
There is also a Talk Back section as well as a listing of upcoming national conferences and links to various sites of interest to educators and other care givers.
The TeacherSource address is <http://www. pbs.org/teachersource/>. Check it out and pass the word.

Galaxy Georgia is
Out of This World!
Galaxy Classroom, a hands-on science and language arts program delivered and funded by Georgia Public Broadcasting through an appropriation from the Georgia State Legislature, is receiving rave reviews from elementary school teachers all over Georgia.
"Galaxy is a quality program that teaches students to think," says Donna Robb, Worth County Schools. "Galaxy integrates subject matter and incorporates QCC objectives."
"I expected my students' test scores in science would increase," says Pam Miller, DeKalb County Schools. "I was pleasantly surprised when their writing scores went up too!"
This year 425 Georgia schools -- representing 105 counties -- are participating in Galaxy Classroom. At those schools 1,800 teachers instruct 54,000 Georgia students using Galaxy interactive distance learning.
State funding also provides hands-on training for four teachers from each elementary school that participates in Galaxy. For the teachers' convenience, training is offered at 15 regional institutes across the state. Here's how some of the thousands of Georgia teachers who have attended the institutes evaluated the training:
"The hands-on experiences made the ideas come alive!"
"Finally a program that you feel comfortable going back to school to implement. I can see how Galaxy will integrate into everything I'm doing."
Does Galaxy make a difference in test scores? A national independent evaluation conducted by Far West Laboratory during Galaxy's pilot year answered a resounding yes! Galaxy students made 145 percent greater gains than comparison students in reading comprehension and 37 percent higher gains in vocabulary. On classification tasks, Galaxy students' gains were twice that of comparison students, and Galaxy students consistently understood the core "big ideas" and were able to apply them in new contexts.
To find out more about Galaxy Classroom -- and how your school can participate -- call Christine Kane at 1-800-303-9070, Ext. 41.

You'll also notice that we are expanding and improving the site to better serve our users -- the educators and students of Georgia. As always, we ask for your input. Visit our site and go to the "What's New" or "Feedback" sections where you can offer your suggestions on how to improve the site. Because You Asked... A Y2K Update
"Y2K" is the term used by many to refer to the "Year 2000" computer software problem faced by organizations that rely heavily on computers. Private and government organizations have had to analyze their hardware and software to make sure that when year 2000 rolls in, their machinery continues to function correctly.
PeachStar has received several calls from technology coordinators and others wanting to know if their satellite equipment is "Year 2000 Compliant." We have researched the question, and here is what we have found:
Schools do not face any Year 2000 problems with the following equipment that has been purchased and installed by the state over the past few years: Your steerable satellite dish Your General Instruments IRDs Your Chaparral receivers
There are a wide variety of VCRs and TV monitors in use in schools across the state, and most have features that allow you to preset to record at future dates and times. If you have a concern about these, we suggest you call the manufacturer of your particular piece of equipment.
As always... If you need help
with your satellite equipment,
