The Long Hot Summer
By Barbara Ingram, PeachStar Marketing Coordinator
As autumn days turn quickly to nights and the school year settles down to a reasonably manageable routine, PeachStar pauses to reflect on our accomplishments this past summer. Our most profound memory is.. .a blur!
While summer is for many a time to enjoy well deserved vacations, it's the busiest time of the year for the staff of PeachStar Education Services. This summer was no different as our days and weeks flew by feverishly. Our preparations for the first day of school set our pace at nothing less than warpspeed as we pushed to meet looming dead lines and stay ahead of drop-dead dates.
Our intrepid leader, Joey Baughman, Director of PeachStar Education Services, challenged, "Many schools will start early this year, so we need all hands on deck!" With no time to spare, the countdown began.
June ticked by with numerous summer-long projects already underway. Stephanie prepared to offer schools another year of TEAMS and MATHLINE and began revising PeachStar's increasingly popular web site. With a slate of new programs lined up for the fall, Sharon proceeded to update the PeachStar Program Guide for publication and distribution to every Georgia school. Wagers revised and expanded the Pipeline format and began preparations for a huge back-to-school issue. Bix supervised an ever-changing intern and temporary staff, kept all office activities organized and managed everyone's technical support needs. Barbara continued registration and enrollment of a record number of Irasshai students, and developed packaging of Irasshai Explorer. The SALSA production and curriculum teams began laying plans for 12 new episodes and revision of the SALSA Activity Guide. Liz continued editing the Explorer Teacher Resource Guide and Student Activity Guide while working with Kathy to train new Audio Interaction teachers for Japanese I & II. Joe and Rosemary began the task of planning and scheduling the fall broadcast schedule for PeachStar channels 410 and 430 as well as PeachStar's line-
up on GPTV. Marcelle marshaled the administrative support staff and kept the accounting functions flowing. With the arduous task of managing the entire body of work and countless other special projects, Joey, Janie and Mike were faced with close-out of the fiscal year and annual performance evaluations for all staff members. June down and only two months to go!
"No more meetings!" was the battle cry in July. New projects were launched with the implementation of a "teams" project management concept designed to capitalize on the strengths of all staff members. Organizing for this new approach required endless hours of planning and coordination. We developed several ambitious but do-able goals. The Creative and Production teams joined forces to create a catchy new look for PeachStar's time slot on GPTV. (Check out the cool, new "School's On" graphics, Mon. - Fri.,1-3 PM.) The Public Relations team began development of a statewide back-toschool PeachStar awareness campaign. The Customer Service team organized to redefine customer service systems, activate new technologies and develop more efficient response tools.
By August the dust began to clear. Pipeline and the Program Guide were in the mail. Joey, Janie, Liz and Stephanie were featured on several radio and television talk shows, "telling the world" about PeachStar. Irasshai Explorer packages were shipped on time. Irasshai classes were staffed, scheduled and ready. SALSA began production. All other projects were on target and everyone on task. As schools prepared to open their doors once again, PeachStar was ready to serve educators and students across the state, offering the best instructional programming and other support services available.
As of this writing, it is early fall, and we are six weeks into the 1998-99 school year. Based on the feedback we have received from educators, our backto-school preparations are much appreciated. We hope you continue to experience positive results from all our hard work during the long, hot summer.

Update for Colleges and Technical Institutes Adult Learning Satellite Service Changes for 1998-99
The GPB-sponsored memberships for Georgia's public colleges and technical institutes in the Adult Learning Satellite Service expired June 30, 1998. This membership had been provided for the past three fiscal years to provide programming appropriate to postsecondary learners. Data during this three-year period indicated an excellent use of this resource by some institutions while others mainly took advantage of free programs offered as part of the membership package. Beginning in FY 99, individual institutions must decide if they wish to continue their membership and work directly with ALSS-PBS. This is the same approach GPB has used with providers of K-12 programming; i.e., we sponsored the programming long enough for users to assess its worth to their institutions.
Because GPB has been such a good ALSS customer for the past three years, PBS has responded by giving the most favorable rates in the nation to Georgia institutions. Also, since PBS is moving to a digital format that will require users to have special receivers, both three-year and one-year membership options are being offered. Institutions interested in continuing or initiating ALSS membership should contact PBS directly at 1-800-257-2578.
Where We'll Be.
PeachStar staff will be off the road during November, but you can find us at the Technology for Teachers conference (formerly Microcomputers Online with Education) at Georgia State University, December 10-11. We will have a booth and make several workshop presentations. Questions regarding conference registration should be addressed to the sponsoring organization. Other questions regarding PeachStar booths/presentations may be addressed to Stephanie Caywood at <scaywood@gpb.org>, or call (404) 685-2584.
