PeachStar Foreign Language Courses Have National Impact In New School Year
From New Jersey to Hawaii, schools across the nation are following Georgia's lead and taking advantage of foreign language and culture offerings from PeachStar Education Services.

Spanish is Fun!
SALSA, a 30-part Spanish language acquisition series for elementary school students, received overwhelming acceptance in its first full year of broadcasts on PeachStar. Elementary schools in Georgia and other states -- and in some cases entire school districts -- have used the SALSA programs in classrooms where no Spanish teacher is available. Even where Spanish teachers are available, SALSA has proven to be an effective supplemental teaching tool. In fact, several state departments of education are considering adoption of SALSA statewide to meet mandated elementary-level foreign language acquisition goals. SALSA's story-based curriculum approach and its entirely-in-Spanish presentation received thumbs up from language specialists near and far. As a result, SALSA's future looks bright, and production of another 15 programs is underway.
Free to Georgia schools, SALSA will begin airing on PeachStar on October 28 at 9 AM. Schools interested in purchasing the SALSA activity guide, which provides enrichment and integrated curriculum learning activities for each lesson, may contact the PeachStar Foreign Language Hot Line at (800) 222-6006, Ext. 2554.

Japanese for Middle Schools
A brand new PeachStar series quickly earning a national reputation is Irasshai Explorer, a Japanese language and culture exploratory course for middle schools. Many Georgia schools have already ordered the series at the exclusive Georgia rate of $400, half the national rate. Student texts are only $19.95 each. And although they don't have the Georgia price advantage, schools across the nation are recognizing the value of having a comprehensive exploratory language and culture course, ready to teach, that requires no background in the language.
Irasshai Explorer comes complete with 12 independent videos covering various topics on Japanese language and culture, a Teacher Resource Guide including black line masters, a student text book and a web site for additional studies. Designed for maximum flexibility in the classroom, Irasshai Explorer can be used as a stand-alone six- to nine-week Japanese language and culture exploratory course or as a three-week supplement to a Social Studies unit on Asian studies. Teachers do not need to be conversant in Japanese. Irasshai Explorer expertly guides teacher and students to a fascinating discovery of Japanese language and culture. To receive more information or sample copies of the Teacher Resource Guide and student textbook, call the PeachStar Foreign Language Hotline: 800-222-6006, Ext. 2554.

lrasshai Registration Continues; Course Begins September 3rd

Registration for Irasshai, the "best K-12 distance learning course in the nation," will continue through September 30. Georgia schools can enroll at a reduced rate of $300 per student. The national rate is $450 per student.
Facilitators of Irasshai need no background in Japanese and are encouraged to learn the language along with their students at no additional charge. The courses are available to students nationwide via the PeachStar Satellite Network or by purchase of tapes. Students who enroll receive a student textbook, twice-weekly conversation practice by telephone with a native Japanese speaker, and access to a web site offering a myriad of additional study opportunities.
To receive a 1998-99 Irasshai Registration Kit, call the PeachStar Foreign Language Hotline: 800-222-6006, Ext. 2554.

Emmy award-winning Tim Cook sensei (Japanese for teacher), will continue to teach Irasshai, Japanese I & II, this fall on PeachStar.

You have the right to tape and hold each ALS program for a seven-day preview period. If you wish to use the programs in any way other than previewing, you must obtain an off-air taping license from ALS, 1-800-257-ALSB. Refer to your PeachStar Program Guide for pricing information. (A PeachStar Suggestion-In the past, many schools have had success raising money to purchase ALS and other programming by acquiring funds from their PTA or PTO, their Partners In Education, or local civic organizations.)
