Elementary Spanish
Salsa is Hot
For Prekindergarten
and Kindergarten
jHola! Georgia Public Broadcasting is excited to announce a new PeachStar Education Services offering for this school year -- a comprehensive Spanish program for prekindergarten and kindergarten students. The series, entitled Salsa, will begin airing on October 15 on the PeachStar Satellite Network. (Check your October Pipeline for dates and times.) Salsa will also air on GPTV, weekday afternoons, beginning in January. There are 30 video lessons in the Salsa series; PeachStar will air one program per week, and that program will be repeated during the week.
Salsa is the beginning of a multiyear PeachStar project that, upon completion, will make prekindergarten through fifth-grade Spanish instruction available to all Georgia students. The series was designed and developed by a national task force of recognized experts in the fields of foreign language/Spanish language and culture instruction, and early childhood education.
A key feature of Salsa is that the teacher, or classroom facilitator, does not have to be certified to teach a foreign language or even be familiar with the language being taught. Each video lesson is preceded by a strong staff development component called a "video advance organizer" that familiarizes the classroom facilitator with the content and objectives of the lesson, reviews all vocabulary words, and demonstrates the correct pronunciation of all Spanish words used in the lesson.
Salsa is also supported by a free Teacher's Guide that is full of classroom activities students and teachers can engage in to enhance each video lesson. Lessons in the guide are being developed in conjunction with the production of the video lessons; as individual lesson guides are completed they will be mailed to facilitators. We suggest that facilitators acquire a three-ring binder, so each lesson guide can be added as it is completed and mailed. The guide is an important component of the series and should be ordered as soon as possible so that the classroom facilitator can become familiar with the series. If you are interested in obtaining a free Salsa Teacher's Guide, call PeachStar's Foreign Language Hot Line at 1-800222-6006, ext. 2554.

The video lessons themselves feature lovable puppets, state-of-the-art graphics and animation, and a good dose of humor. To raise the comfort level of students and facilitators, and to make the learning of a new language as fun as possible, Salsa videos feature the puppet characters acting out adaptations of wellknown, time-honored stories. The puppets and other characters in the stories speak only Spanish; research shows that this kind of total immersion is the most effective way to learn a second language. The characters, scenes and situations make the meaning of the Spanish words obvious to young viewers. For instance, the first programs in the Salsa series involve a re-telling of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," and vocabulary words include "soft" and "hard" (as in the beds), "cold" and "hot" (the porridge), and the numbers "one" "two" and "three" (the number of bears). The kids catch on right away.
Other stories that will be used include "Little Red Riding Hood," "Three Billy Goats Gruff," "The Little Red Hen," and "The Tortoise and the Hare."
The ensemble of puppet characters seen throughout the series will conclude their adventures at year's end in their unique dramatization of "The Little Engine that Could." They will all board that tireless and triumphant Train to celebrate the fact that young students who participated in Salsa really could -- and really did -- learn an impressive amount of the Spanish language in the course of the year. And it was fun!
Salsa is fun. More important, we know that it works. Salsa was piloted in the spring of 1997 at schools in Georgia and 10 other states. Here are some comments made by on-site evaluators who observed the Salsa pilot lessons:
"All students involved seemed to enjoy the lessons and attempted to use new vocabulary throughout the day."
"The children were like sponges soaking up all the new vocabulary. They were not intimidated and had fun in the process."
"Students always greeted me in Spanish when I came to observe. They also told me good-bye in Spanish."
"Parents requested a word list, so they would know what the children were saying at home, and they could interact with their children."
"Students wanted to continue the lessons, even after they were finished."

So get ready for the October debut of this exciting new elementary Spanish series, produced by PeachStar Education Services and distributed on the PeachStar Satellite Network to all Georgia public schools. Schools interested in participating should order the Teacher Guide lessons that are already available. And it's a good idea for facilitators and students to go ahead and review those children's stories listed above. Then tune in to PeachStar on October 15 and watch your students begin to learn, speak and enjoy Spanish.
Watch Pipeline for updates related to elementary Spanish. We continue to collaborate with a major publisher to make additional supplementary
learning and teaching materials available.
PeachStar Produces Programming for the
Science Channel
PeachStar Education Services has just begun production on "Finders Seekers, Science Keepers," a series of 24 12-minute science programs featuring a host of lovable and curious animal puppet characters. The series, appropriate for use in grades K-2, will be featured on the Science Channel, which is distributed by the Education Management Group (EMG). On each program in the series, the "Finders Seekers" characters explore scientific topics such as water and other liquids, sound and light.
The Science Channel consists of a wide range of programming for students at all grade levels K-12. According to EMG, "The ultimate goal of the Science Channel is to get kids actively involved as young scientists, using higher order thinking skills and problem solving strategies." Elements of the series include regular interaction with real-life scientists at locations such as NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratories, the Cincinnati Zoo, and the Orlando Science Center; interviews with scientists that answer students' questions about careers in science; Experiments of the Days; Cool Internet Sites; and a Student Work Showcase.

New! Improved! The 1997-98 PeachStar Program Guide
Veteran media specialists know that each summer PeachStar Education Services mails a PeachStar Program Guide to every school. The annual guide includes:
All our program offerings on PeachStar Satellite Network and on GPTV's Ready To Learn and lTV schedules for the coming year, with descriptions and pertinent information related to subject areas, grade levels, etc.
Helpful information about program rights, program providers, distance learning information, and general information about GPB and PeachStar.
If you haven't already received your 1997-98 Program Guide you soon will. There are many improvements this year, all based on suggestions we have received from media specialists and other educators around the state. (Yes, we do listen!)
The major changes:
The guide will last forever. Well, a lot longer than a year anyway. The new guide consists of a durable three-ring binder with detachable pages. From time to time we will send replacement pages, new pages to add and instructions to delete old pages. We will not publish a brand new guide each year. This will allow us to spend less on the publication in future years and more on programming for you.
Air dates and times will not be included in the book this year. You can find the most current scheduling information in your monthly Pipeline.
The Program Guide will also be available as file you may download by FTP (file transfer protocol) or from our web site, and within the next few months, all the information contained in the Guide plus current scheduling information will be on a searchable database on our web site. Watch future issues of Pipeline for progress on this front.
We hope that these changes will enable media specialists and teachers to access information more easily. And we hope you will find that the information itself is more relevant, accurate and current than ever before. As always, if you have comments or suggestions, please contact us by phone or e-mail <pipeline@gpb.org>.

PeachStar Professional Development Institutes (PPDI) "Informational Moments"

PeachStar Professional Development Institutes (PPDI) will continue during the 1997-98 academic year. This year the format will be "informational moments" highlighting new developments in products and services offered by PeachStar Education Services. For example, one PPDI will be entitled How to Use Your PeachStar Program Guide. This program will be intended for all media specialists, rookies and veterans, since significant changes have been made in the format of the PeachStar Program Guide. Another PPDI entitled How to Use Your PeachStar Pipeline will be for all educators, because this year we are greatly expanding our distribution of the newsletter -- 25 copies of Pipeline are being mailed to every K-12 public school in Georgia. There also will be PPDis for postsecondary faculty and public library staff to demonstrate how to use special services PeachStar will provide to colleges, technical institutes and regional public libraries.

PPDI topics, dates and times will be announced monthly in Pipeline and listed on PeachStar's web site. Each program will be broadcast many times to facilitate taping, so they can be made part of staff development workshops or faculty meetings or used on an individual basis to suit the needs of practicing educators. The plan is to have enough "informational moments" so that the total viewing time will equal one SDU - so contact your local staff development director to let them know you're interested and to make sure these are part of your local staff development plan!
PeachStar will present two PPDis in September. The first is

Georgia Stories on the Web

A Georgia Stories web site, under continuous development, adds further to the collection of valuable educational resources that PeachStar is amassing for teachers and students of Georgia History. Currently, we're still calling this a pilot project because the web site contains material that correlates with some -but not all -- of the Georgia Stories video lessons. As soon as funding is acquired, however, the site will be expanded to cover the entire Georgia Stories I and II collection.
The Georgia Stories web site address is <http://www.ceismc.gatech.edu/ga_stories>. This site puts primary source material, collected from archives throughout the state, at the fingertips of anyone with access to the web. Much of this valuable historic information is not readily available and can only be obtained by traveling around the state and visiting the individual archives in person -- or by going to our web site.
Students and teachers will find this to be a rare and rich resource for classroom study. The material is referenced to QCC objectives, and there are numerous links to other related web sites. Also, there is a feedback component that allows users to share their impressions and suggestions.
A workshop on the use of the Georgia Stories web site will be presented at 10:15 a.m. on October 17, at the Council for Social Studies Annual Conference in Columbus. Four more workshops are being planned for sometime in 1998.
The Georgia Stories web site is a collaboration between PeachStar Education Services; CEISMC and the School of History, Technology and Society (both divisions of the Georgia Institute of Technology); and three GIFT Fellows.

TEAMS WORKS

"Guten Tag!"

TEAMS (Telecommunication about Math and Science) is a proven resource that can help teachers provide quality instruction in grades K-7. Although the focus is on math and science, TEAMS also offers instruction in social studies, history and language arts.
This year a new earth science series debuts; the Earth Processes Series explores geology, land forms, sedimentation, weathering and erosion, rock and soil cycles and mapping. The new Geometry Series will explore the concepts, terms, shapes, classifications and properties of geometry.
Throughout each instructional series, TEAMS integrates technology and hands-on manipulatives to ensure that students develop skills in critical

thinking and cooperative learning. TEAMS features a strong focus on
professional development. Each instructional module includes a staff development component. There are also entire series of programs devoted to staff training.
Teachers registered for TEAMS receive many supporting materials -print and electronic -- that supplement the basic video lessons offered on PeachStar. School systems across Georgia have found TEAMS to be an affordable and effective way to offer quality instruction and continually upgrade teaching skills. For more information, call1-800-222-6006, ext. 2586.

Integrated Science Sites

Integrated Science (IS) is an innovative and award winning video-based science series for students in grades six, seven and eight. IS is produced by the University of Alabama. Each week major topics and concepts are introduced via three 20-minute programs telecast over PeachStar to participating schools throughout the nation. The video lessons are reinforced by classroom instruction and hands-on activities, using curricula and materials designed by IS.
Schools that want to participate in IS must send teachers to Alabama for an intensive one-week training course. As the national distributor of IS programming, PeachStar has been able to negotiate a special arrangement that allows a limited number of Georgia teachers to receive half-scholarships for the training. These reduced-rate scholarships go quickly, and each year the demand far exceeds

I
the supply. However, the IS series is so popular and effective that many Georgia schools that don't receive scholarships elect to go ahead and pay full price, so their teachers can receive the training and offer IS to their students. In fact this year 266 teachers from 49 schools in 34 Georgia public school systems, plus teachers at two private schools, are using Integrated Science in their classes.
Integrated Science is a valuable resource for motivated middle school teachers who are always looking for new and effective ways to inspire and inform young students. Watch Integrated Science on PeachStar. If you like what you see, find out how
you can register by contacting Kim Mitrook, University of Alabama, at 1800-477-8151, Ext. 0430.

Die Deutschstunde, a staff development offering for teachers of German, will be aired by PeachStar this fall. The series, produced by Goethe-Institut New York, is designed to provide an overview of German culture. Topics include portraits of German cities, recent music, poets reading from their works, German history and more. There are no fees associated with the series. So far eight 30-minute programs are scheduled.

Teacher Connex

A year ago PBS began publishing two new magazines for classroom teachers. Teacher Connex suggests ways that upcoming PBS programs, such as Nova, can be most effectively used to enhance classroom instruction. Teacher's Digest is a forum that educators from around the nation can use to share effective teaching strategies and to discuss current education issues.
Last year, to introduce Georgia educators to the new publications, PeachStar made complimentary copies available to all Georgia public schools. Teachers and media specialists who have found the magazines useful can now subscribe directly from PBS, for a nominal fee. Call1800-278-4176. And the Emmy
Goes to ... Peach Star!
PeachStar claimed two Southern Regional Emmies at the annual awards ceremony in June.
Student Voices: The 1996 Georgia Student Mock Election won in the Interview/Discussion category. The one-hour special was broadcast live over PeachStar and GPTV just days before the November general election. Hundreds of thousands of Georgia students voted in the Mock Election, and dozens participated in the television program, on tape and live from GPB studios. Collin Seidor and Gerald Bryant were the producers, PeachStar Director Joey Baughman was executive producer, and WSB-TV political correspondent Bill Nigut was host.
The inimitable and irrepressible Tim Cook received the Emmy for Individual Excellence/Performer category. Tim is the on-camera instructor for Irasshai, PeachStar's Japanese foreign language and culture course. Always the ham, Tim delighted the Emmy crowd with an acceptance speech that lurched back and forth between Japanese and English. The on-camera antics are backed by solid classroom experience. Tim first taught Japanese at the college level in China, and he has been teaching high school distance learning courses in the United States since 1989.

Issues and Solutions in Higher Education Series
Live Video Conferences for Faculty at Colleges and Technical Institutes
PeachStar is proud to again provide free of charge the following live teleconferences to all colleges and technical institutes in Georgia. These programs are most effective if viewed live so that Georgia faculty can interact with the presenters. However, the programs may be taped for use at a later time for faculty who are unable to attend the live event due to scheduling conflicts. A facilitator's guide and master copy of the participant packet will be mailed to the campus contact person. Mark these dates:

lrasshai
Debuts Japanese II Course
Irasshai, PeachStar's Japanese language and culture course that high school students can take for credit, is ready to begin it's second full school year. And there's something new: This year, Irasshai will offer two year-long courses, Japanese II as well as Japanese I. Irasshai is aired nationwide over the PeachStar Satellite Network and is also broadcast on Georgia Public Television.
Irasshai (which means "welcome" in Japanese) features video lessons hosted by Tim Cook, the best known and most accomplished distance learning instructor in America. (This summer, Tim won a regional Emmy for his efforts. See the story elsewhere in this issue of Pipeline. More kudos for Cook --In November Tim will travel to Tokyo to represent the United States at the Japan Foundation's "Conference on Japanese Instruction via Distance Learning in the United States and Australia.") Japanese I consists of 73 video lessons and Japanese II consists of 63. In each course students view two lessons per week. Lessons can be viewed when they are aired, or, in the case of Japanese I, schools may purchase boxed sets and play the tapes in class. (Japanese II boxed sets won't be available until January 1998.)
The video instruction is supported and enhanced by audio interaction sessions that allow students to converse by phone twice weekly with native speakers of Japanese. Textbooks and other print materials provide study activities and homework assignments for individuals, pairs and small groups. Homework assignments are supported by telephone and on-line help desks. Irasshai students and classroom facilitators in classes across the nation can participate in electronic discussions, and a vast web site provides a valuable source of curriculum enrichment and interaction. View the site at <http:/ /www.ceismc.gatech.edu/irasshai>.
The regular registration deadline for both courses has already passed; however, schools may elect to take advantage of late registration, which runs through September 15. Classes that register late should be prepared to play a little catch up, as the first video lessons will be aired on PeachStar in early September. Schools interested in registering for Irasshai should call PeachStar's Foreign Language Hot Line at 1-800-222-6006, ext. 2554. There is a fee for students who wish to register for Irasshai.

Ready To Learn Workshop Schedule for 1997-98 School Year

Ready To Learn (RTL) is a national program designed to help families,

teachers and child care providers prepare young children for success in

school. Every day, several hours of RTL programs are broadcast on GPTV,

and many also air on the PeachStar Satellite Network. The offerings include

programs such as Barney and Friends, Puzzle Place and Wishbone.

PeachStar reinforces Ready to Learn objectives with workshops for par-

ents, teachers and other child care providers. The workshops provide sup-

port for those who use television as an additional resource in their work

with preschool and school age children. Workshop participants receive

printed materials and other resources which can help nurture children's nat-

urallove of learning and reading. RTL workshops, conducted by PeachStar's

Early Childhood Project Manager Kathy McCollister, are approved by the

Georgia Department of Human Resources for two hours of training credit for

child care providers.

Approximate dates and locations for upcoming workshops are listed

below. For exact sites, dates, times and other information, please contact

Kathy McCollister at (404) 685-2562. September 97 Dalton College
