PeachStar Professional Development Institute:
Distance Learning Workshops Via Satellite
Georgia Public Broadcasting is pleased to continue an exciting new programming initiative: PeachStar Professional Development Institute (PPDI) via satellite. Recognizing the critical need for ongoing teacher training in an ever-changing educational world, the institute will offer teachers, media specialists, technology coordinators, staff developers and other educators across the state a range of innovative professional development opportunities. The purpose of the PPDI is to help Georgia educators successfully integrate distance learning technologies into P-16 classrooms, media centers, and other educational settings.
The series of teleworkshops will feature a satellite-delivered version of our standard PeachStar Distance Learning Workshop. Participants will: discover how to access and utilize distance learning programming resources in the classroom; identify distance learning programs that match curricular needs; learn how to access distance learning programming and support materials; receive copyright information on PeachStar programming options and troubleshoot problems related to recent installations of the Digicipher II receivers.
The January 1997 teleworkshop featured a PeachStar Distance Learning Provider Overview. On February 20 the broadcast will focus on PBS MATHLINE. (See the MATHLINE article in this Pipeline.) Participants will receive a detailed description of this innovative, interactive program for teachers of all grades who want to expand and improve their math teaching skills and methodologies. There will also be timely information on how to participate in MATHLINE during the 1997-98 school year.
The dates and topics for the remaining teleworkshops are: February 20: PBS MATHLINE: Our Students Can Do It! The PAGE Academic Bowl
Media specialists and classroom teachers, mark your calendars. The state championship rounds of the 13th annual PAGE Academic Bowl for Middle Grades will be broadcast live to Georgia public schools over the PeachStar Satellite Network, Tuesday, February 18, 11 AM-Noon. The program will be rebroadcast on PeachStar Friday, February 21, 1-2 PM.
The Academic Bowl is a contest between school teams comprised of students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) created the competition in 1985 and has sponsored the annual event since then. PAGE established the Academic Bowl to inspire students to excel academically, to stimulate student competitiveness, and to recognize student achievement.
Preparation for the 1997 competition began last fall, when registration materials and guidelines were distributed to all Georgia middle schools. Local competitions were held, leading to regional con-tests on January 11. The top two school teams from each region will go on to compete in the State Playoffs conducted February 1 in Macon. Then, on February 18, the two teams that emerge as play-off finalists will vie for the state championship.
Students and educators can watch the event live on PeachStar. There are tentative plans to rebroadcast the program at a later date on GPTV's statewide openair network, so home viewers across the state can tune in to the excitement. Call 1-880-222-6006, ext. 2434, after February 19, for information about possible GPTV air times.
This is the first time in several years that the Academic Bowl will be aired by Georgia Public Broadcasting. GPB producer Gerald Bryant (host of the Georgia Lawmakers series) will be moderator for the state championship rounds.
"For years I have attended and enjoyed the finals of the Academic Bowl," said GPB Executive Director Werner Rogers. "I am delighted that PAGE and GPB now have joined forces to spotlight academic excellence by making this program available to all Georgians."
"We are very proud of this program of academic excellence," said Nancy Hayes Kitchens, director of PAGE Foundations, Inc. "We are particularly proud of the students and coaches who have worked so hard for the honor of representing their schools at the state final competition of the PAGE Academic Bowl."
The PAGE Academic Bowl is open to all private and public schools in Georgia. Questions cover curriculum objectives recommended by the Georgia Board of Education in the areas of English and literature; mathematics;
PeachStar Highlights Black History Month
February is Black History Month- a time for celebrating leaders and unsung heroes, both past and present, who have made contributions to our world. In literature, medicine, science, government, business, and the arts, we recognize the achievements of individuals who are of African descent.
During the month of February, PeachStar has many exciting programs for students, teachers and parents to highlight some of these accomplishments. And it's educational, informative, and enlightening to discover the contributions of those less known who helped to shape the world as we know it.
We invite you to scan the following list of shows, jot down broadcast dates and times, and set your VCR's to tape any programs of interest. View them with your students and/or families.
Starting Wednesday, February 5, Visions of Africa airs 3-4 PM. Audiences will travel past the usual violent and tragic headlines on Africa to the more realistic, but positive view of the peaceful people and places that never make the headlines. This four-part series, adapted for students in grades 5 - 12, shows how both the poor and middle classes live, examines the economic rebuilding of Uganda, and views the birth of a new democracy in Ghana.
Breakthrough: The Changing Face of Science explores mathematics, science, and engineering careers for students in grades 4- 12. Twenty African American, Latino, and Native American scientists are profiled who represent a broad spectrum of experience, scientific pursuits, and future goals. None of them match the stereotype of who a scientist is or what a scientist does. The series of six programs airs on Mondays, beginning February 3, (except 2/17) 3-4 PM.
African American Legends features interviews with African Americans who have achieved success in their chosen fields, including authors, business owners, and community leaders. Among the guests are Chester Higgins, Jr., photographer and author of Feeling The Spirit who depicts his 25-year career as a professional photographer, and Sylvia and Herbert Woods, owners of Sylvia's
science; social studies, history and geography; current events; art and music; physical education and health; and computer science.
PAGE was founded in 1975. Since then, it has become the largest association of professional educators in the state.
Restaurant in Harlem. All nine of the 3D-minute episodes are hosted by Dr. Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., President of the Center for Urban Education Policy. This series will air Mondays and Fridays, 5-6 PM, beginning February 3. See Listings for dates and titles.
Under the African Sun tells the story of the art of Black South Africans. Seven half-hour segments take audiences on a journey from rock drawings of primitive peoples to varied works of present-day artists. Appropriate for grades 8- 12, this series documents the turbulent history of apartheid through the eyes of South Africa's Black artists. Beautifully photographed, strikingly set to music, and perceptively narrated, the program airs on Fridays, 7-8 PM, February 7, 14, 21, and 28.
Nobel Laureates Toni Morrison and Derek Walcott will join panel discussions in the four-part series, Nobel Laureates of Literature: An Olympic Gathering. U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove reads from her work. This series airs Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, 8- 9 PM, on February 4, 5, 11, and 12.
On Achievement TV, A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: The Content of Your Character features Dr. Maya Angelou, Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole and Dr. Walter E. Massey. A retrospective of significant moments from Dr. King's life will form the foundation for leaders from all walks of life to explore the concept of character and values. See this show at noon on February 19.
Georgia Stories invites students to experience parts of our state's rich heritage. There are several programs in this series pertinent to the study of Black History, and each program is made up of two or three individual stories. Be sure to catch the following segments:
Shows 105 and 107 featuring Georgia's African Heritage, The Growth of Slavery, and African Roots.
Tuesday, February 11,4-5 PM.
Shows 109 and 111 featuring The Civil War and the Black Soldier, The Alonzo Herndon Family, The Race Riot of 1906, and African-American Inventors.

GPB Scholarships for Integrated Science
GPB is offering 36 half-scholarships for Georgia teachers for the Integrated Science program for the 1997-98 school year. This innovative program designed for middle school students provides a four-day summer workshop (room, board, suppilies, and instructional services), electronic mail software with 1,400 other science educators and professional staff year-round, science laboratory kits, curriculum materials including teacher's manuals with hundreds of hands-on activities and a classroom set of student handbooks, video resources via PeachStar, and a $150 stipend (sent to teachers to purchase perishables).
As many schools in Georgia adopted textbooks last year, some school districts adopted Integrated Science. In response to the students' reaction to the program, a 1996-97 GPB scholarship winner responded, "I love Integrated Science 000 The students are more enthusiastic," said IS7 teacher Gayla Jackson of Northside Middle School in Houston County. "[They]love the telecasts and the activities. They don't miss being tied to a traditional text (book)."
"I am an Integrated Science student 00. and just wrote you to let you know that Integrated Science is better than any other type of science class I have ever been in," wrote IS7 student Ron Ogden, a Georgia student.
Another 1996-97 GPB scholarship winner commented on the four-day summer workshop, "Inservice was a good week," said IS7 teacher Kathy Jones, Bleckley Middle School in Bleckley County. "It helped being a student to know what our own students go through. We had a chance to experience what they [the kids] experience."
While some schools have complete labs and expensive equipment, Integrated Science allows any teacher to facilitate hands-on in the classroom by using materials from local stores, recycled materials, and other inexpensive items. "You can do the same ideas with simple things without a lab," said Jaquelyn Turner, ISS teacher at Camden Middle School in Camden County. "At least you have a chance to get these things (hands-on activities) done." She also commented on the telecasts. "Telecasts not only present one angle, but three or four (angles) and examples of a concept," said Turner. "This program addresses all learning modalities and makes science applicable to their (the students) lives."
Integrated Science's hands-on, complete science curriculum meets the new National Standards for Science. Currently 273 teachers in Georgia are teaching Integrated Science. Last year 124 applicants vied for the scholarships, and more are expected to apply this year. Those teachers awarded the scholarships will receive $875, half the cost of the prgram. Schools are expected to fund the remaining $875 for enrollment.
GPB mailed scholarship applications to schools in January. The deadline to apply is February 20, 1997.
Scholarships will be awarded by March 1, 1997. If you have any questions about Integrated Science or recieving an application, please call Kim Mitrook at 1-800-477-8151.

The 3rd Annual READING RAINBOW Young Writers and Illustrators Awards Contest is Underway!
PeachStar Education Services is proud to announce the third annual READING RAINBOW Young Writers and Illustrators Awards Contest. To enter, children in grades K-3 must write their own story and illustrate their own work with original drawings. Contest entries must be accompanied by an entry form and must follow official guidelines. Entry forms and guidelines are available by WRITTEN REQUEST. Fax requests to 404-756-2556 (preferred); e-mail to peachstar@gpb.org; or, mail requests to Georgia Public Broadcasting, 1540 Stewart Avenue, SW, Atlanta, GA 30310, attn: READING RAINBOW contest. The deadline for student entries is Friday, March 28, 1997 at 5 PM.
TIPS FOR ENTRANTS These suggestions are based on comments from last year's local judges.
1. Originality and creativity are a must. Entries that look too much alike (especially class entries) are less likely to grab the attention of the judges. Work based on original characters, as opposed to cartoon or other existing characters, carry much more weight.
2. Follow entry guidelines! While creativity is most important, entrants should also pay attention to the number of illustrations and words needed.
3. Class entries: If you would like class entries returned, EACH ENTRY must be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope. Every effort will be made to return entries with a SASE but, unfortunately, this cannot be guaranteed.
4. Make sure your entry ARRIVES to Georgia Public Broadcasting on time; no later than Friday, March 28, 1997 at 5 PM.

LEARNING TO LEARN SERIES PREMIERES FEBRUARY 3
Transitioning to College
*** Academic Assistance
PeachStar Education Services in cooperation with the Board of Regents and UGA's Center for Continuing Education is premiering a series of 30 satellite broadcasts designed to aid in the transition to college of Georgia's high school students.
According to the latest school report card issued by the State School Superintendent, 24 percent of high school graduates must take remedial course work upon entering college. Budget figures indicate that millions of dollars are being spent to provide academic assistance for college freshmen and sophomores.
Learning to Learn is an excellent example of how PeachStar Education Services of Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) is working hard to help improve education at the K-12 and postsecondary levels. Funding for the series was provided by GPB.
University faculty at UGA and Georgia Southern worked with Jim Shehane, Head of Television Services, at the UGA Center for Continuing Education to produce the series to be delivered to all Georgia high schools via GPB's PeachStar Satellite Network.
Twice-weekly broadcasts on Mondays and Fridays from 11 AM to Noon will focus on the skills and strategies high school students must possess in order to be successful in college. The series will begin on February 3 and conclude on May 23, and the broadcasts may be taped for use at a more convenient time. Topics will be grouped as follows:
Affective Factors That Influence Learning Time Management Motivation Test Anxiety
Cognitive Factors or Studying Factors The BCA's of Learning Before Reading
Connecting During Reading After Reading
Studying Specialized Subject Areas Science, Math
Test Preparation Strategies
Objective Tests Essay Exams Maximizing Performance
At press time, 60 school systems have registered representatives to attend a workshop for teachers which will show them how to use the series most effectively. Contact persons at each college campus have also been invited to send representatives. Although the target audience is juniors and seniors in high school, the series will be appropriate for use in academic assistance classes at the college level. A special feature for workshop participants is a complimentary e-mail account good for one year which enables them to interact with the Learning to Learn faculty.
For more information contact Jim Shehane, Head, Television Services Georgia Center for Continuing ' Education, The University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602, at 706-542-1226 or via e-mail: shehanej@gactr.uga.edu, or by FAX at 706-542-6720.

PBS MATHLINE: ONLINE AND ON DEMAND STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Recruitment For 1997-98 Begins
If you know teachers who want to "spice up" the way they teach math, seek feedback from other math professionals, or integrate technology into the classroom, PBS MATHLINE offers a year-long staff development program just for them. For the third consecutive year, Georgia Public Broadcasting is recruiting teachers for PBS MATHLINE. This fall, GPB will offer the ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Math Project (ESMP), the MIDDLE SCHOOL Math Project (MSMP) and, for the first time, the HIGH SCHOOL Math Project (HSMP) which will focus on Algebra.
PBS MATHLINE uses online communication to bring math teachers together from across Georgia and across the country to share ideas and gain feedback. This year-long, online, professional development experience gives math teachers the opportunity to observe, via videotape, master teachers in their classrooms and implement lessons in their own school. Communications software provides participants with the opportunity to explore resources and discuss lessons with other math professionals. Teachers work at their own pace and on their own time.
Applications will be sent to principals in February, 1997. If you want to make sure that you or your school receives information, please contact Stephanie Caywood at (e-mail) scaywood@gpb.org or (fax) 404-7562556; or voice, 1-800-222-6006, ext. 2584.

My Dear Fellow Teachers
Distance
learning pro-
gramming is an
essential part
of the tremen-
dous techno-
logical growth
that education
in Georgia is
experiencing.
Sonya
Shaw High School Columbus, Georgia
A statewide satellite network has provided us a
means of accessing programming that
was only a dream just a short time
ago. From teleconferences to elec-
tronic field trips (and GPB is expand-
ing in this area!) to the interactive
classroom, Georgia is the envy of
educators across the country.
Not so many years ago, educational
television, as it was then called,
consisted of a single individual
lecturing or demonstrating a labora-
tory experiment. Sometimes the
instructor conjugated verbs or ex-
plained some other part of speech.
None of this appeared terribly
exciting but nonetheless I found the
notion intriguing. The idea of learning
from a teacher in another location,
even another city, was an exciting
one. However, it was many years
before I became involved with
distance learning.
Once I became a classroom teacher,
I realized the tremendous value of the
television as a teaching tool. I wanted
my students to have programming that
provided instruction that supported
what I was teaching. I sought to
provide them with current informa-
tion, to make available attractive
programs that caught and held their
attention.
After leaving the English Language
Arts classroom in the Spring of 1993,
I became a Media Specialist at Shaw
High School in Columbus. I immedi-
ately consulted the Intructional
Television Guide. I was planning to
implement that programming, along
with whatever might be available
through Cable in the Classroom. Both
were, and are excellent resources.
Then I learned of something entirely
new, a program that would provide
the kind of attractive package that I
had longed for in which students
could actively participate. It was the
kind of programming that offered
even more than I had wanted. It
provided interaction via toll-free
phone lines and computer on-line services. It was the electronic field trip, and it would change my professional life.
The first electronic field trip was the Turner Adventure Learning visit to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I read about it and contacted Telecable ( now TCI) of Columbus. Mr. John Anglin informed me that he would arrange a preview. I excitedly told the teachers about this marvelous new teaching tool. They were not interested. I viewed the program, however, and I was delighted! This was for us, even if the teachers were not yet behind the idea! Another year was to pass, however, before we would begin to fully participate in the field trips.
In the spring of 1995, Mrs. Norma Parker, Director of Media Services at Shaw, and I began to plot how we might purchase the field trips. That old bugaboo, lack of funding, presented a hurdle. This was made even more critical in our school district for a bond referendum was defeated earlier that year. Our school board had urged us to look for ways of using our existing monies prudently. Yet, both Mrs. Parker and I felt that it was important to engage our students in an interactive distance learning project. The TAL field trip that was scheduled for May, 1995 was a commemoration of the fiftieth anniversay of the end of World War II. Live from Berlin, it would look at the war years, interview persons who were historians, as well as persons who had lived through the war. It would also look at the current issues facing Europe today. This was especially exciting to us, as so many of our students have ties to Europe or to the armed services.
Recalling that I was acquainted with members of several veterans organizations in Columbus, I contacted the president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 655, Mrs. Edna Yuna. I asked Mrs. Yuna if the auxiliary would provide half of the funding for the field trip. She agreed that it sounded like the kind of project that the auxiliary would be interested in. Funding projects for youth is something that the VFW and the Auxiliaries support. In fact, Mrs. Yuna suggested that (if approved by the membership) the Auxiliaries would share the cost of the field trip with the Post membership. It was approved and the field trip was a
rousing success. Moreover, the only cost to us was in time invested. It was one of the best investments that we made.
Since that time, the Ladies Auxiliary and the membership of VFW Post 665 have purchased nine electronic field trips for us. These have all been Turner Adventure Learning Field Trips but they have given me the courage to expand our field trips through several other providers. We also have sponsored teleconferences, most recently the Advanced Placement Calculus Teleconference. Funding has come from a variety of sources, including school improvement funding for staff development. Our teachers are now convinced of the value of what we are implementing through distance learning programming.
We have seen the benefit of approaching civic groups, private industries and local businesses to fund our technology projects. We have more often received a "yes" answer than a "no," and satellite programming, cable television, and the internet connection have been made available to us through this avenue. There is no question that our students have benefited from seeking such funding. When the lack of funding for a program that you wish to initiate in your school or in your school district presents an obstacle, don't be afraid to ask for assistance from community groups. You may find, as we did, that success awaits you.
