lTV Programming
Fall1998
PeachStar plans ahead! Even before the beginning of the current school year, we began the long selection process that will eventually determine what Instructional Television (lTV) programming will be available for schools through the Public Broadcast Service in the 1998-99 school year. This past summer, at a national First View conference in Atlanta, PeachStar staff and our colleagues from PBS stations and other distance learning providers and distributors around the country participated in a screening of more that 135 programs and series. Eighty-five of those programs made the initial cut, and soon the number will be reduced even further after a second stage in the reviewing process. That's where you come in.
PeachStar would like your help in screening and voting on the programs that you feel will address the K-12 instructional and staff development needs of your systems and schools, students and faculty. We will be inviting teachers, media specialists and curriculum directors to help in the final selection of lTV programming for the 1998-99 school year.
More details about the next lTV screening-- including how you can become involved, will be posted in the January issue of Pipeline.
Driving Ambition
On July 1, 1997, tough new teen driving laws took effect in Georgia. An informative video, Driving Ambition, is designed to explain those laws to Georgia youth. After seeing the video, young viewers will understand that a drivers license is a privilege that can and will be taken away -- swiftly and surely -- if it is abused by drinking, drugs or just plain recklessness or carelessness.
Driving Ambition will be broadcast by numerous commercial television stations throughout the state on Tuesday, December 30 (check local listings). GPTV will air the program at 2 PM on Monday, January 12, 1998 and at the same time on Friday, January 16. PeachStar will broadcast Driving Ambition to Georgia schools at 1:30 PM on Monday, January 5; Wednesday, January 7; and Friday, January 9.
You're Invited!
On Saturday, December 13, 1997, Georgia Public Broadcasting will host a Community and Family Day Open House, giving all Georgians an opportunity to tour our new broadcast and production center in Midtown Atlanta. From 10 AM until 4 PM our guests will have a chance to tour the most technically advanced television and radio production center in Georgia. Even better, you and your family can meet Tim Cook, the Emmy-winning on-air instructor of Irasshai, PeachStar's nationally acclaimed Japanese language and culture series. Also on hand -literally -- will be the puppet stars of Salsa, our new Spanish instructional series for elementary school students.
There'll be give aways, food and live entertainment -- fun for everyone! So mark your calendar, and come see us at 260 14th Street in Midtown Atlanta. We look forward to your visit.

Salsa Introduces Shaw High Pre-K Students to Spanish
Frequent visitors to Shaw High School in Muscogee County are not surprised to hear the sound of young -very young -- voices chorusing through the halls of the secondary school. After all, Shaw has hosted preschool programs since 1979, and this year 20 four year olds are enrolled. However, something new has been added this school year. For the first time, instructional television and distance learning is being incorporated into the early childhood curriculum. Under the supervision of teacher Bobbie Sims, preschoolers at Shaw are participating in Salsa, PeachStar Education Service's new Spanish language and culture series for prekindergarten and kindergarten.
Salsa began airing on PeachStar in October. The show features puppets and state-of-the-art animation and graphics and uses well-known, classic stories such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, to lead children through an entertaining and effective study of the Spanish language and culture. Best of all, teachers do not have to be certified in, or even familiar with, the
Spanish language. Staff development is included as a component of each Salsa installment, enabling any adult care giver to facilitate the instruction.
According to Marietta Webb, director of the Child Care Program at Shaw, her high school is one of only two Georgia Lottery funded prekindergarten programs housed in secondary schools in the state. The other is at Carver High, also part of the Muscogee County School System. Shaw's prekindergarten program succeeds not only because of the expertise of professionals such as Webb, Sims and classroom paraprofessional Karen Levy. The program also benefits from the assistance of 20 Shaw high school students enrolled in the Occupational Child Care classes.
With the support of dedicated educators, young children will continue to fill the halls of Shaw High School with happy songs. With the help of Salsa and distance learning technology, those voices will soon sing in Spanish.
Submitted by Sonya Boyd, media specialist at Shaw High School.

The Great War
A special preview feed of The Great War and the Shaping ofthe 20th Century from ALS (PBS' Adult Learning Service) will air this month. These programs go beyond the political and military history of World War I to reveal the titanic struggle's ongoing social, cultural, and personal impact. Never before had so many nations taken up arms at a single time. Never had the battlefield been so vast and so deadly -- on land, in the sky, and at sea. And never had a war reached so deeply and extensively into the lives of millions of people far removed from the fighting. Preview The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century weekdays at 4 PM beginning December 8 on PeachStar. The series consists of eight 50-minute programs. If you decide you would like to use the programs in your classrooms, call ALS at 1-800-LEARNER to purchase a site license and keep the series for your whole school to use.
Thomas Jefferson
In December PeachStar will present a week of programming examining the life and times of founding father and American icon Thomas Jefferson.
The PBS Adult Learning Service (ALS) will present Thomas Jefferson, Part I on Monday, December 1, at 4 PM. The concluding Part II will air on the following day at the same time. Each program is 90 minutes long. Thomas jefferson takes students to many of the central places of Jefferson's life, shedding new light on this legendary political figure, musician, architect, scientist, mathematician, inventor and philosopher. NOTE: Call ALS at 1-800-LEARNER to purchase your site license, so you can keep the series for your whole school to use.
On Wednesday, December 3, at 4 PM, PeachStar will air Project Discovery: A Visit to Mr. Jefferson's Monticello, which takes an in-depth look at Jefferson's famous home.
On Thursday, December 4, also at 4 PM, PeachStar airs Achievement TV's Democracy & Citizenship: Thomas Jefferson which was produced in recognition of the 250th anniversary of Jefferson's birth.
The programs will repeat on PeachStar - check Middle and High School listings in this Pipeline for dates and times. All four programs will be blockfed on Channel 430, Monday, December 15, at 8 AM.

A Letter to PeachStar
As a first grader, Courtney Mayes was a Georgia winner in last year's Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Awards contest. She wrote this letter to PeachStar Education Services' Stephanie Caywood, who administered the contest in Georgia.
You can see and read Courtney's story by visiting <http:/ /www.gpb.org/pstar/ rrcontst.htm>. Her prizes from the contest included, among other things, books, art supplie~. a Reading Rainbow T-shirt, and dinner for four at Morrison's Restaurant. Courtney is now a second grader at Hodge Elementary in Savannah, Georgia.
By the way, Courtney's letter to PeachStar included this note from her grandmother, who entered Courtney in the contest.
Dear Ms. Caywood,
We appreciate you and PeachStar for the interest you show in children (our future!) Courtney wanted to write to you.
Sincerely, Barbara Mayes Turnipseed

Special - Important Satellite Advisory
As you may recall, the TelStar 401 satellite was lost during the 1996-97 school year, and GPB had to move to SpaceNet 4. Currently, GPB plans to move to its new permanent satellite horne during the month of November. To conduct this move so as to have a minimal impact on our broadcasting schedule as well as a minimal inconvenience to those of you who will have to repaint your satellite dishes, GPB will be broadcasting on both SpaceNet 4 as well as on our new satellite horne, TelStar 4 (T4) from November 3 through December 1. After Noon (EST), December 1, GPB will only be broadcasting on T4.
A separate notice was mailed to all PeachStar satellite sites and schools at the end of October. However, we have printed the information here again just in case you may not have gotten this news.
Directions for repositioning your satellite dishes are on the next page! Please copy and/or distribute as needed.

How to add TelStar 4 (GPB's new satellite home in the sky) to Your Chaparral Receiver
You will need the remote control for your Chaparral Receiver, a pencil and a piece of paper. Estimated time this task should take is approximately 5 to 15 minutes.
To help you understand what you are doing as you follow these directions, here is a summary in plain language. You are going to turn off your digital receivers so that you can see programming in analog. Since we cannot know exactly where each site is starting from, or your site's position relative to the satellite T4, we are giving you directions to the satellite Galaxy 7 (G7). You will know you are on G7 when you see the analog signal of Fox News. Since we know T4's position relative to G7, we have given you the mathematics necessary to move from G7 to T4. You will know you are pointing at T4 when you see the analog signal from PBS. Basically, once you are on T4, you turn your digital receivers back on to begin receiving PeachStar and GPTV's digital signal.
1. Power off both of the DSR 4200 digital receivers (IRDs). The red SAT/TV light should be off; if not, press the SAT/TV button to deactivate each IRD.
2. Using the Chaparral remote control, press the Satellite button. A satellite menu should now be displayed on the TV screen.
3. Using the down arrow key (PIP Select) on the Chaparral remote control, arrow down to satellite Galaxy 7 (G7). Press the Enter button. The dish should now be in motion.
4. When the dish has stopped, use the channel button on the Chaparral remote, channel up or down to Channel 20. You should now be viewing video from "FOX News" on satellite G7, Channel 20.
5. Press the Satellite button on the Chaparral remote control. You should see an arrow next to G7, Galaxy 7, C (C-Band), and a four-digit dish position. Write this number down. (Example: G7 Galaxy C 4700).
6. Next, in the satellite menu, use the down arrow key (PIP Select), or the up arrow key (Large Select), and arrow up or down in the menu, until you come to satellite T1. Press the Enter button. The dish should now be in motion.
7. Once the dish stops, use the Channel button on the Chaparral remote control, and channel up or down to Channel 18. Press the Time button and, in the upper right hand corner of your TV screen, T1 18 should now be displayed.
8. Then press the Menu button on the Chaparral remote. The word "menu"should now be displayed in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Press the number "7" button at the bottom of your Chaparral remote control. If prompted for a password, enter "2345." Menu 7, SAT/CHAN Setup should now be displayed on the screen.
9. Arrow down to the second line, and enter "101" for the polarity. 10. Arrow down to the third line, and enter "40600" for the fre-
quency. (Note: A decimal point and "ghz" designation will be automatically inserted.) 11. Subtract 20 from the current dish position (your dish position for G7), and write this number down. (Example: 4700 - 20 = 4680). 12. Arrow up to "dish position" using the "Large Select" key, and press the Enter button when the arrow is next to "dish position," and enter the number from the preceding step (Example: 4680). The screen should say "dish in motion" after entering this new four-digit dish position. 13. Now press the Menu button two times on the Chaparral remote. The screen should display "updating new dish position." 14. Then press the View button. All on-screen menus should disappear and there should now be familiar video from PBS. (You have now re-programmed the dish position for the C Band side of TelStar. You now need to re-program the dish position for the KU Band side of TelStar.)
15. Press the Satellite button. You should have an arrow next to T1. Write down the four-digit position for this satellite. This number will be the same number for the dish position for T4, the KU Band side of TelStar. (Example: T1 TelStar C 4680).
16. While you are still in the satellite menu, use the down arrow key (PIP Select), or the up arrow key (Large Select), and arrow up or down in the menu, until you come to satellite T4. Press the Enter button. The dish should now be in motion.
17. Once the dish stops, use the Channel button on the Chaparral remote control, and channel up or down to Channel 4. Wait for the on-screen display to clear, and press the Time button. In the upper right corner of your screen, you should see "T4 04" displayed.
18. Now press the Menu button on the Chaparral remote. The word "menu"should now be displayed in the lower left corner of the screen. Press the number "7" button at the bottom of your Chaparral remote control. If prompted for a password, enter "2345." Menu 7, SAT/CHAN Setup should now be displayed on the screen.
19. Arrow down to the second line, and enter 101 for the polarity. 20. Arrow down to the third line, and enter 117985 for the fre-
quency. (Note: A decimal point and "ghz" designation will be automatically inserted.) 21. Arrow back up to "dish position," and press the Enter button when the arrow is next to "dish position," and enter the four-digit dish position from step 15 (Example: 4680), which is the same dish position for T1, the C Band side of TelStar. Wait for the dish to stop moving. The screen should say "dish in motion" after entering the new four-digit dish position. (Do not be alarmed if you see snow instead of video at this time. There may not be any current video on the KU Band side of the satellite at the moment you are repointing your dish.) 22. Press the Menu button two times on the Chaparral remote. The screen should display "updating new dish position." 23. Then press the View button and all menu's should disappear from the screen. 24. Press the Satellite button, and arrow up or down to satellite T1. Press the Enter button. You should now be on satellite T1, Channel 18. And you should now be seeing familiar programming from PBS again. 25. To view PEACHSTAR, press the SAT/TV button on both of your IRDs, this will switch you to digital reception. You may have to channel up or down, using the channel arrows on the IRDs. On the IRDs, PeachStar programming is on Channel410, GPTV programming is on Channel400, and occasionally Channel 430 will be used for broadcasting for special services.
If you need additional help, call the Satellite Help Desk at 1-800-877-7805.

Galaxy Fax Fever
Since the October launch, Georgia Galaxy Schools have been faxing like never before. To help make your faxing easy, here are some valuable tips from experienced Galaxy teachers. 1. Always use your personalized Galaxy Fax Cover Page when faxing to Galaxy. Double check to make sure you have blackened the appropriate bubbles indicating WHERE you want the fax to go AND the NUMBER of PAGES you are sending. (If you have not received your Galaxy Fax Cover Page call Marci at 1-800-303-9070 ext. 1.) Submitted by Angeanette Snell, Columbus. 2. Use a dark, thin-line pen on your faxes. Pencil is too light! Avoid using color and NEVER use glue, pins, staples or crayons on your faxes. From Pam Miller, Lithonia. 3. Check your fax machine on Fridays before you leave for the weekend. Make sure it has paper and ink. You will be receiving faxes during the weekend from Galaxy. Brinda Morris and Kathy Sanders, Cedartown.
Happy faxing! For additional Galaxy information call Christine Kane at 1-800-303-9070, ext. 41.
