MS Word version of this update
Week of March 27, 2006
The 2006 session of the General Assembly adjourned sine die on Thursday, March 30th, the 40th day of the legislative session and resulted in an extremely successful legislative session for the Department of Technical and Adult Education.
Highlights for the week include:
q House and Senate leaders reached a compromise on the $18.6 billion budget for fiscal year 2007 on Thursday, day 40, which included essentially all of the Governor's recommendations for the department as well as several additional items added by the legislature (MS Excel File Available Here). The budget now heads to the Governor's desk for final approval.
q The amended version of Senate Bill 562, legislation which creates the Georgia Higher Education Facilities Authority, was approved by both the House and Senate and now awaits the Governor's signature.
q A compromise version of Senate Bill 415, which will expand the HERO (Helping Educate Reservists and their Offspring) Scholarship, was approved by both chambers and now heads to the Governor's desk for final approval.
Looking back on the department's legislative priorities that were identified at the leadership conference last November, the agency was extremely successful in accomplishing these initiatives due, in large part, to our commitment to follow a unified agenda and the remarkable efforts by each and every one of you to follow these particular initiatives:
1. Obtain funding for the payroll shift correction 2. Obtain funding for the 2007 capital outlay priorities 3. Pursue legislation that will allow for the carry forward of certain
revenues from fiscal year to fiscal year 4. Maintain level funding in fiscal year 2007 for Quick Start, Adult
Literacy and the Technical Colleges
Please take the time to send a note of thanks to your local legislators and also to the leadership of the House and Senate, particularly the budget conferees and the members of the Higher Education Subcommittee of Appropriations (see listing below), for their unwavering support of our technical college system.
