The Week Ahead:
The Legislature will reconvene on Monday, March 20 for day 33.
The House Higher Education Committee will meet on Tuesday, March 21 at 2:00 p.m.
The Senate Higher Education Committee will meet on Tuesday at 2:30 (Rm. 450, CAP)

Week of March 13, 2006
The Legislature ended a week of activity on Thursday, March 16 Day 33 of the 2006 session of the General Assembly. Both houses will return to work on Monday as lawmakers continue their duties in the seven days that remain. Highlights for the week include:
q "Crossover Day", the deadline for getting a piece of legislation adopted by the chamber where it was introduced, ended at 1:30 a. m. on Tuesday, a marathon session in which 128 bills were considered.
q The department's carry forward legislation, House Bill 1294, was added to a supplemental rules calendar for Monday and passed by a vote of 162 0. The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
q Senate Bill 436, the agency's legislation which would allow for the suspension of up to two state board meetings per year, passed out of the House on Tuesday and now awaits the Governor's signature.
q The Senate Higher Education Subcommittee of Appropriations released the committee's recommendation for the higher education division of the budget which included the following for DTAE:
r Reduction for enrollment decline - ($675,000) r Pest Control Certification Program - $168,000 r Elimination of the House adds for the Shirley Smith Learning
Center as well as the additional funding for the Columbia County Satellite Campus of Augusta Technical College
*Recommendations for capital outlay were not included in the subcommittee report
q The Senate Appropriations Committee will vote out the fiscal year 2007 budget on Monday, March 20 at 10:00 a.m., which will include any additions/changes to the capital outlay budget.
q The Governor's "HOPE Chest" measure, which restricts the use of lottery funds, fell twelve votes short of the necessary two-thirds majority in the House on Monday.
q Senate Bill 506, legislation which establishes mandatory fees for HOPE scholarships and grants for eligible public postsecondary institutions created after January 1, 2004, passed out of the House Higher Education Committee on Wednesday and now moves to the full House for consideration.
q Representative Abdul-Salaam and others introduced House
