The Week Ahead:
The Legislature will recess on Monday, February 27 and will reconvene on Tuesday, February 28.
House Higher Education Committee will meet on Tuesday, February 28 at 2:00 (Rm. 406 LOB)
Senate Higher Education will meet on Wednesday, March 1 at 4:30 p.m. (Senate Mezz)

Week of February 20, 2006
The Legislature ended a week of activity on Thursday, February 23 Day 23 of the 2006 session of the General Assembly. House and Senate leaders spent much of the week working through differences in the fiscal year 2006 amended budget. Both houses will return to work on Tuesday as lawmakers continue their duties in the seventeen days that remain. Highlights for the week include:
q House and Senate budget leaders continued negotiations on the 2006 amended budget throughout the day on Friday. To obtain a full copy of the budget, go here.
q The House unanimously approved House Resolution 1081 on Wednesday, legislation that would establish a study committee to review the current financing and expenditures for both the University System as well as the Department of Technical and Adult Education. The 11 member committee is charged with making recommendations to the General Assembly prior to the 2008 session. HR 1081 now moves to the Senate for consideration.
q Senate Bill 436, the agency's legislation which would allow for the suspension of up to two state board meetings per year, has been assigned to the Higher Education Committee in the House and is on the committee's agenda for Tuesday, February 28.
q House Bill 1425, introduced by Representative Porter and others, mandates legislative approval for any increases in premiums, surcharges or co-payments for the health insurance plans for public school teachers and state employees.
q The Governor's proposed "HOPE Chest" legislation, which restricts the use of lottery proceeds, remains tabled in both the House and the Senate.
q The GOAL and Rick Perkins winners were honored on the House floor with resolutions on Wednesday. Both Kimberly Wilson (GOAL) and Gerald Moody (Rick Perkins) delivered eloquent remarks about the importance of technical education and the vital impact the colleges have on Georgia's workforce. Kimberly and Gerald also received proclamations from the Governor.
q Senate Bill 415, which will expand the HERO (Helping Educate Reservists and their Offspring) Scholarship to include coverage to surviving spouses as well as to any member wounded during service, is scheduled for a full vote in the Senate early next week.

q House Bill 1294, the department's carry forward legislation, passed unanimously out of the House Ways and Means Committee on Thursday. Chairman Larry O'Neal praised Commissioner Vollmer and the entire system for managing in the midst of tough economic times over the past few years. The bill now moves to the full House for consideration.
