Hundreds of Students Attend the Third Annual "College, Yes You Can" Day at the Capitol
For the third consecutive year, the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) hosted its Annual "College, Yes You Can" Day at the Capitol on January 24, 2011. More than 320 students, representing 14 schools from across the state of Georgia, received assistance with college admissions, financial aid and more. In addition, this year, GSFC included a college fair as part of the program. More than 25 colleges and universities were on hand for the event.
During the event, students spoke directly with financial aid and college admissions experts and attended workshops on the college admissions process, financial aid 101and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
GSFC's Board Chairman, William E. (Billy) Jerles delivered the keynote speech focusing on the benefits of higher education and that college is possible for students who may doubt whether or not they can or should go to college. "Quite simply, college makes you better equipped for life," said Jerles. In addition, Ron Day, Director of Financial Aid at Kennesaw State University, spoke to students about using the GAcollege411 website and navigating the world of financial aid.
"We wanted the students to know that there are a variety of options to prepare them for life after high school, including higher education. The future success of our young people depends on their access to a wide range of quality higher education opportunities. GSFC connects Georgians to these resources and services that will ensure a well educated and highly trained world class workforce," said Tim Connell, president of the Georgia Student Finance Commission.

GAcollege411: Begin with the End in Mind (The College Bound StudentTMs Roadmap for Successful Planning)
When providing college planning at North Cobb Christian School, we begin with the end in mind. Our favorite tool for implementing this strategy is the GAcollege411 website, which empowers parents and students by giving them specific tools for planning and applying to college. From college fairs to career seminars, the high school student at North Cobb Christian School is educated on many future paths. Showcasing GAcollege411 as the premier website for college planning, North Cobb Christian School holds annual seminars to educate our college bound community. The site provides a roadmap for successful college planning, financial information and scholarship opportunities. In addition to college prep seminars, the counseling staff at North Cobb Christina School uses GAcollege411 as the framework for sculpting a life plan for each student. Moreover, at the beginning of the school year, upper school students are given the opportunity to access their career/interest profiles on GAcollege411 , matching that information to colleges that have those majors. Next, our students explore admissions requirements for those schools. This enables the college bound student to make beneficial high school course selections. By tailoring course selections to college choices, the college bound studentTMs high school resume is suitably attractive to prospective colleges. Additionally, each student at North Cobb Christian is shown how to register for the SAT and GSFAPPS, and how to view their HOPE scholarship information. GAcollege411 TMs progress reports enable the college bound student to track their core GPA. In summation, GAcollege411 enables our counseling staff to equip our students with the tools necessary for stress-free college planning, beginning with the end in mind.
