On Sept. 18, the Office of Health Services and Georgia Correctional Healthcare senior leadership joined facility staff at Montgomery and Hancock State Prisons for the presentation of the Floyd Bliven Award by the Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) to the medical staff at both facilities.
The Floyd Bliven Award was established by the House of Delegates in 1997 for fa-
cilities which exhibit special excellence in the health and well-being of those incarcerated in prisons and jails in Georgia. The facilities must achieve a score of 100 percent on their annual MAG audit and also demonstrate a concerted effort on the part of administrative, security and clinical staff for professional medical excellence.
Since its inception, only five awards have
been presented which includes both Montgomery and Hancock State Prisons.
Congratulations to the medical staff at both Montgomery and Hancock State Prisons! You have clearly demonstrated our motto, Exceptional is Standard.

On Sept. 21, the Department hosted an inaugural youth basketball tournament at State Offices South at Tift College for students ages eight to 18 in Forsyth, Ga.
The event was organized by Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) employee and former 12 For Life student, Chantel Hicks.
Chantel Hicks first started working with GDC in Nov 2010 through the 12 For Life program, a collaborative effort between GDC and the Monroe County School System designed to help students complete their high school education while gaining real-world job experience along with needed life-skills training and mentoring.
Hicks became a full-time employee in Oct 2011 as a Mail Service Clerk and was recently promoted to Lead Mail Service Worker in April of this year.
"If you want something you never had, you must do something you've never done before," said Hicks.
The Department recruited community and GDC staff volunteers to assist as referees, scorekeepers, assistants to scorekeepers, court managers and activity coordinators in order to ensure the success of the event.
"I want to thank all the community volunteers, staff volunteers and employees who helped make this event such a resounding success," said Assistant
Commissioner Timothy C. Ward.
Participating teams included: Jackson Boys (ages 13-15) Georgia Gladiators (ages 13-15) Mercer Boys (ages 13-15)
Winners of the girls group was the Georgia Gladiators and winners of the boys group was the Mercer Boys.
"Focusing on our youth and ensuring they stay on the right path is essential to their future," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "We look forward to next year's Youth Basketball Tournament and making this a yearly tradition."

On Sept. 14, the Athens DRC participated in the Athens Recovery Fest, a collaborative venture planned by several local agencies including the Athens Day Reporting Center and Advantage Behavioral Health Systems, to celebrate people who are living in all forms of recovery (substance abuse, domestic violence, eating disorders).
The event was designed to bring awar-
Balloons signifying September's "National Substance Abuse Awareness Athens DRC Counselor Lasheika Kassa month
eness to the public about programs that can help those in need of recovery, as well as an education about how life changing recovery can be.
The Athens DRC recruited approximately 50 probationers in Phases I and II to do community service work (as a restorative justice project for the Clarke county area), as well as volunteers from the recovery community to make
this event a success!
All participants of the event were given a free "We Do Recover" bracelet to signify that people in the recovery community do get better.
At the culmination of the event, dark purple balloons were released to signify National Substance Abuse Awareness month (September).
Before releasing the balloons, participants were invited to write down worries in their life that they want to remove.
"This was the first Athens Recovery Fest, but it was a overwhelming success and plans are in the works to have an even better event next year," said Athens DRC Counselor Paige Barber.
MISSION The Department of Corrections creates a safer Georgia
