GEORGIA POWER CUSTOMERS TO HAVE LOWER FUEL BILLS
ATLANTA -- Customers of Georgia Power will see reduced electric bills starting this mon1h because of the unseasonably warm winter and mild spring Georgia experienced this year. Due to action taken today by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC), Georgia Power users will receive a $41 million reduction in their power bills for the next six months. "The average residential consumer can expect a decrease in their power bill of $1.24 per month for the next six months," said Commissioner Bobby Baker.
Georgia Power notified the PSC last June of an over-recorded fuel cost balance because of the mild winter and spring. Fluctuating prices for natural gas and coal and the cost of transporting fuel to the generating plant are some of the factors which can affect the fuel cost rate. Less demand for power this year allowed Georgia Power to use their most efficient plants to generate power which reduced fuel costs. Since the fuel rate is based on normal weather projections, the mild weather resulted in over collection.
Higher volume consumers could experience rate reductions of slightly higher proportions as the fuel cost is lower when power is transmitted to customers metered at higher voltage levels.
