Commission Postpones Action on Natural Gas Marketer Investigations
ATLANTA, February 21, 2008 The Georgia Public Service Commission (Commission") today postponed taking any action against two certified natural gas marketers until its next regularly scheduled Administrative Session at 10 a.m. on Tuesday March 4, 2008. Commission staff has alleged that Georgia Natural Gas and SCANA have violated state law and Commission rules in failing to notify their existing customers of changes in their variable rate plans.
The issue will be discussed during an open forum at the next Energy Committee on February 28, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the Commission offices at 244 Washington Street, Atlanta, Georgia. There is a proposed settlement with one of the two marketers but no parties or the Commission have agreed to the details of the proposal. The Commission has the option of accepting the settlement, scheduling a hearing on the matter or taking any other action it deems appropriate.
The Commission urges all natural gas consumers to contact their marketers and enroll in a plan that best fits their needs. Not only do different marketers charge very different prices, the prices that some marketers charge their existing customers may vary greatly. So, even switching plans within the same marketer can save you money. Some marketers charge existing customers higher per therm rates than the current standard variable rate and will not switch you to this lower cost plan unless you expressly ask them to do so.
