Initially released in 2013, AIDSVu has now added more local data. The new release includes maps for 33 cities by zip codes, and in some cases by census tract. These cities, including Atlanta, account for 60 percent of the HIV/AIDS epidemic nationwide.
Created by the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in partnership with Gilead Sciences, Inc., AIDSVu is a free, online interactive mapping system that lets users explore the HIV epidemic geographically. Using data supplied by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and by state health departments, including Georgia, users can see how HIV impacts Atlanta and other major U.S. cities by ZIP code.
"By providing a means to visualize the epidemic, AIDSVu can help pinpoint those areas with the greatest need for prevention, testing, and treatment services," said Pascale Wortley, M.D., MPH, HIV Epidemiology Section Chief for the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH).

The Center for Obesity Reversal, a new toplevel research center at Georgia State University, has been established to foster research projects that will help fight the nation's obesity epidemic.

The Division of Information Technology has just added a new course Information Security: What I Learned from Larry to Saba Learning Management System. This e-course provides an overview of information security strategies for all employees to safeguard information within the
department.

The center will focus on tackling and

reversing the nation's obesity epidemic by

using a basic science approach. Researchers

will study obesity and related diseases, such

as diabetes, hypertension, chronic

inflammation and some cancers. They will

focus on the two obvious ways to reduce

obesity: decreasing food intake and increasing

energy expenditure, as well as study the

mechanisms involved in the breakdown of

stored fat and burning the products of fat

breakdown.

The center will provide research opportunities

for 10 primary principal investigators and two

associate members, whose diverse research backgrounds will make the center

unique and offer innovative approaches to the obesity problem.

Timothy Bartness, a world-renowned obesity researcher and Regents' Professor at Georgia State, will be the director of the Center.

Fernandez as the director of Infant

Mortality within the Maternal and

Child Health section. In her new role,

Fernandez will collaborate with other

teams within DPH, whose work has an

impact on perinatal outcomes,

including promotion of breastfeeding,

safe sleep practices, tobacco cessation

and community-based interventions

within targeted clusters with a high incidence rate of infant mortality.

board," said Seema Csukas, M.D., Ph.D., director, DPH Maternal and Child Health

Section. "We are doing some great things in addressing infant mortality and

The March of Dimes is now accepting nominations for the Georgia March of Dimes 2014 Nurse of the Year Awards. Nurses who have demonstrated excellence and leadership may be nominated in 16 diverse categories of nursing. Last year, more than 700 nurses were nominated from across the state of Georgia.

To be eligible for an award, nurses must be nominated by a colleague, peer or a patient whom they have served. Nominees may have achievements in research and education or at the front lines of care from advanced practice to critical care and maternal/newborn care. Award recipients will be determined by a distinguished selection committee comprised of health care professionals.
Through Nurse of the Year Awards, the March of Dimes recognizes nurses who demonstrate exceptional patient care, compassion, and service. Whether serving as a health care provider, educator, researcher, or chapter volunteer/advisor, nurses play a critical role in improving the health of Georgia residents.
