Season
It's official. Flu season has begun in many states in the U.S., including Georgia. Although flu season typically begins in October, the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) has been tracking flu activity in some areas of the state for several weeks.
Public health professionals urge everyone age 6 months and older to get a flu shot, which is the most reliable way to protect against the virus. But PHWEEK asked Audrey Martyn, DPH's influenza surveillance coordinator, more about what the 2013-2014 flu season might hold.

Staff from the East Central Health District 6 occupied an entire corner of the Augusta Convention Center, educating residents about their services and programs like WIC, breastfeeding promotion, tuberculosis control, Children First, asthma control, STD services, women's health and hypertension management.

The staff screened more than 500 people for various health metrics like blood pressure and body mass index, identified several people who qualified for DPH programs and scheduled appointments for some clients to follow up with district health providers.

GSU Gets $19 Million for Tobacco Research

In what is the largest grant in Georgia State University history, the university's School of Public Health and its partners will receive $19 million over five years from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to establish one of 14 Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science (TCORS).
Georgia State, with its partners, the University of Illinois at Chicago and RTI International, will focus on a particularly important and often overlooked aspect of regulatory science, the understanding of human decision-making around the use of tobacco. Led by Michael P. Eriksen, dean of the School of Public Health and lead author of the "Tobacco Atlas," the Georgia State TCORS will conduct three research projects to examine human economic behavior, consumer reaction to tobacco marketing and individual perception of risk of using novel tobacco products.
