After only five days as a new department, the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) held a news conference at the State Capitol to officially launch Give Kids a Boost in partnership with the Georgia State Patrol and the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. Environmental Health Branch Staff Member to Study in Europe After Work Recognized Nationally
Julia Campbell, a Program Consultant with the Chemical Hazards Program in the Environmental Health Branch, has been awarded with a prestigious honor in the environmental health community. Julia was selected as the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA)/ Chartered Institute of Environmental Health/Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors Sabbatical Exchange Award recipient for 2011. The NEHA Sabbatical Exchange is a renowned two to four week professional development opportunity to observe international environmental health practice policies and methods, and to share American expertise with professionals in Canada or Britain. Each year, one Environmental Health professional is selected from a nationwide pool of applicants.

HIV Testing Up in Cobb and Douglas

The Cobb & Douglas Public Health District (DCPH) had great success at their National HIV Testing Day at the Marietta Public Health Department. The health department tested 102 clients this year, nine times more than they tested in 2010. CDPH collaborated with Someone Cares Inc. of Atlanta to organize the event. Every person who attended the event received counseling and testing in 25 minutes or less.

China Officials Explore Georgia's Infectious Disease Surveillance System
On the Department of Public Health's (DPH) first day as a new agency, staff from the Infectious Disease and Immunization program welcomed public health officials from China to learn about the Department's Infectious Disease Surveillance and Prevention system. The Georgia Council for International Visitors (GCIV) asked DPH to arrange a visit for participants from China's Ministry of Health & Disease Control Departments, who are traveling around the country to learn the latest U.S. practices in disease prevention, education and treatment and to gain an understanding of how public and private agencies manage health issues.
