STRUBLE ELECTED BY PARKS GROUP
The Southeastern Association of State Park Directors recently chose Henry D. Struble, Director of the Parks and Historic Sites Division- Ga. Dept. of Natural Resources as President of their organization. Struble was elected at the Association's 34th Annual Meeting held at Stone Mountain Memorial Park in November.
Mr Struble has served with the State Parks since 1959, when he was assistant to the Director/Treasurer of the Department. From 1963 to 1972 he was Deputy Director, Department of State Parks, and became Director of the Parks and Historic Sites Division in May~ 1972. He had formerly been Directorof Parks and Recreation for the city ofGriffin.
The 34th Annual Meeting of the Association brought together State Park Directors and members of their staffs from 13 states in the Southeast. In addition, representatives from National Park Service installations in the southeastern states were present. States represented at the meeting included: Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, Virginia, Kentucky, Louisiana, West Virginia, Arkansas, and Maryland.
ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON RECREATION AND PARKS HELD AT JEKYLL ISLAND
The new Holiday Inn was the conference site at Jekyll Island for the 31st annual Georgia Conferen~ on Recreation and Parks. More than 650 delegates from all over the sfate attended the three day conference early in November and attended various sessions and meetings dealing with topics focused around the conference theme, "The Leisure Age: 1976-2076... The conference was sponsored by the Georgia Recreation and Park Society, Inc., in cooperation with the Recreation Planning Section, Office of Planning and Research, DNR, arid the Glynn County Parks andRecreation Department. Delegates to the conference attended general sessions as well as sessions dealing with topics generic to the special interest groups of therapeutic recreation, outdoor recreation and municipal/county recre-ation. A half-day workshop was also held for members ofthe GRPS Board and Commission section during the conference.
Each year at the conference, the Georgia Recreation and Park Society pays tribute to outstanding lay'people who have contributed significantly to the recreation and park profession in the state during the past year. This year ten Georgians received recognition at the Lay Awards Banquet and these included: Mrs. Carl Harris- DeKalb County; Mrs. James T Anderson, Jr - Cobb County; Mr Kenneth W Justice- Fitzgerald/Ben Hill County; Mr. S. Lee TaylorFitzgerald/ Ben Hill County; Mr John C. Porterfield Smyrna; Mr Charles B. Tyson - Moultrie; Mr. Bernard Wainwright- Baxley/ Appling County; Mr J . Carlyle CoxGainesville; Mr Henry J . Ellis - Statesboro; and Rev. Normand S. Coffman - Decatur.
During his professional career, he has received numerous awards from his peers and fellow professionals in the field including "Recreation Professional of the Year" in 1970 from the Recreation Executives of ten southern states, and as a Distinguished Fellow from the American Recreation Society in 1961 In 1963, he won the Professional of the Year Award presented at the Southeastern Recreation Conference in Mobile, Alabama.
Mr Graves has played an active role in the development of the Recreation and Park movement in Georgia. He was one of the organizers of the Georgia Recreation Workers Association (now the Ga. Recreation & Park Society) in 1945; he assisted in drafting the Georgia Recreation Enabling Law passed by the Legislature in 1946; and was very active in the creation of the Georgia Recreation CommissiOn m 1963 and the Recreation Certification Program in 1968.
Mr Graves began his professional career in Birmingham, Alabama and attended college at Birmingham-Southern where he received his B.S. Degree. He studied civil engineering and planning at Georgia Tech and graduated from the National Recreation School in New York City in 1933, at that time the only graduate school in recreation. He has worked in recreation for forty years and has owned his own business in Atlanta thirty years. He and his wife, Margaret, reside in Atlanta.
GRAVES CHOSEN
TOP PROFESSIONAL
Charles M. Graves, owner of the Charles M. Graves Organization of Atlanta, was the recipient of the Professional of the Year Award for 1975 given by the Georgia Recreation and Park Society, Inc. The Society besto~'S the honor on the outstanding individual in the recreation and park profession in the state each year.
Mr Graves is recognized as a national authority on the planning, establishing and administration of recreation departments, and on the design ofparks and recreation areas and facilities. Since establishing his own organization in 1945, he has designed more than 525 park areas in the country, but principally in the Southeast. He has authored more than 50 articles on subjects related to parks and recreation which have been published nationally and in Canada, and he has written chapters for books now being utilized as texts in colleges and universities throughout the country.
Graves is immediate Past-President of the National Council of Park and Recreation Consultants, and has been appointed for the second year by the Trustees of the National Recreation and Park Association as one of six members on their Committee on Planning. He is a former President of the Georgia AAU and a former president of the Northside Kiwanis Club of Atlanta.

BILLUPS NEW FIELD OPERATIONS DEPUTY
Theodore Mastroianni, Bureau Director for the Atlanta Parks and Recreation System, announced recently that Marvin F Billups has been named Deputy Director for Field Operations in the City of Atlanta's Bureau of Parks and Recreation. In making the announcement, Mastroianni stated, "This will be a new direction for the Bureau in that Mr. Billups has eight years of recreation experience which means that the maintenance of recreation and park facilities will receive a very high priority."
Billups, a graduate of Albany State College, holds many offices in professional and civic organizations. He was recently elected Treasurer for the Georgia Recreation and Park Society and continues to serve as Chairman of the Leisure Careers Foundation for that organization. He is certified by the Georgia Board of Recreation Examiners as aRecreation Administrator.
Prior to his present appointment, he was Recreation Operations Manager for the Recreation Division.

SMYRNA WINS AGENCY AWARD
The Smyrna Parks and Recreation Department was honored by the Georgia Recreation and Park Society recently at the annual conference at Jekyll Island by being chosen the outstanding parks and recreation agency in the state for 1975. The award is given annually by the GRPS Awards Committee.
The Smyrna Department was created on June 3, 1974, with the employment of Lee Silver as its first full-time director The department was established with only one fulltime professional person, the director, and no office space or equipment. During the past year, the department moved into a new office facility and now employs 15 full-time staff and two part-time staff on a regular basis. A wide-range, well diversified recreation program is offered to all age groups by the agency. Activities include: a cultural arts program, health oriented activities, an athletic program, numerous special events activities, and a therapeutic recreation program for special populations in the city. In addition the department operates supervised playgrounds, day camps, two swimming pools, a senior citizens center and the Smyrna Teen Canteen. The city has recently embarked upon a 1.2 million dollar park development project at Kings Springs Park.
PROPERTY AWARDEDTOCHATHAMCOUNTY
The Federal Surplus Property formerly owned by the Hunter-Fort Stewart Army Complex located in the southwest portion of Chatham County (formerly the Ogeechee Stagefield Helicopter Training Center), has been awarded to the Chatham County Commissioners and the Department of Parks and Recreation.
The property comprises 104 acres and plans are being made to develop it into a large community park over a five year period at a total cost of over 1 million dollars. The park wiil include: a large lake, hiking trails, garden plots and a cannery for senior citizens, camping areas, a boat launch, picnic areas, parking facilities, observation areas, a caretaker's quarters, an information and concession building, and a petting zoo.
When developed this will bring the total community parks to three in Chatham County. There are already 42 small neighborhood parks in existance in the county.
CAMP DIRECTORS' SEMINAR
Ms. Edie Klein, Assistant Professor, Recreation and Leisure Studies, University of Georgia, recently announced a Seminar for Camp Directors. The meeting will be held at the University ofGeorgia- Center for Continuing Education in Athens on January 11 through January 14. The Seminar will attempt to assist the new camp director in exploring
areas in relationship to: the general objectives of camping, personnel, organization and structure, programming, site development and utilization, and public relations. EXECUTIVE SEMINAR FOR RECREATION MANAGEMENT
The Annual Executive Seminar for upper level recreation and park management will again be sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources and the Institute of Government, University of Georgia.
Following the format of the 1975 Seminar, this year's program will be devoted to one aspect ofmanagement which concerns all management personnel - that being the "Decision-Making Process"
Dr Charlie Bishop, a Management Science Associate with the Institute of Government, will be the Seminar leader. Dr Bishop was the principal resource leader for the 1975 program.
