Historic Sites
Presidential homes, ancient Indian mounds, Revolutionary War forts, Civil War battlefields and picturesque plantations are just some of the historic sites that mix entertainment with education. Descriptions begin on page 42. A.H. Stephens, Fort McAllister and Kolomoki Mounds are unique because they combine state park amenities, such as camping, with history exhibits. These three sites are described in the state parks section beginning on page 26.
Exciting living history demonstrations, re-enactments and other programs are held throughout the year. A calendar is found on GeorgiaStateParks.org/ Events. All historic sites charge admission, with reduced rates for children. Discounts are available for large groups with advance reservations. A 1921 water-powered gristmill welcomes visitors to this quiet park in middle Georgia. Anglers can enjoy fishing for largemouth bass, crappie and bream in the small lake. Chief Vann House Historic Site

Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site

During the early 1800s, Chief James Vann was a wealthy businessman who owned the most prosperous plantation in the Cherokee Nation. His estate covered 1,000 acres of what is now Murray County. After he was murdered in 1809, his son Joseph inherited the mansion and plantation. In the 1830s almost the entire Cherokee Nation was forced west on the infamous Trail of Tears. The Vann family lost their elegant home, rebuilding in the Cherokee Territory of Oklahoma.
Today the Vann House survives as Georgia's best-preserved historic Cherokee home, including a remarkable "floating" staircase. Visitors can take a guided tour of the home and surrounding buildings, see a film and exhibits, walk an easy nature trail and picnic on the historic grounds.

Twenty years before the 1849 gold rush in California, thousands of prospectors flocked into the Cherokee Nation in north Georgia, marking the true beginning of our country's first gold rush. Dahlonega thrived and a U.S. Branch Mint opened in 1838, coining more than $6 million in gold before closing in 1861.
Today, visitors can see a complete set of these rare coins, a nugget weighing more than five ounces, a large hydraulic cannon and nozzle used to blast soil from mountainsides, film and gift shop. The museum is housed inside the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse, the oldest courthouse in Georgia. Visitors will see beautiful wooden chapel seats from 1889 and the judge's chambers. Dahlonega is a popular destination for gold panning, shopping and sightseeing.

Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site

Fort King George Historic Site

Home to several thousand Native Americans from 1000 a.d. to 1550 a.d., this site protects six earthen mounds, a village site, borrow pits and defensive ditch. Etowah is the most intact Mississippian Culture site in the Southeast. Artifacts in the museum show how natives of this political and religious center decorated themselves with shell beads, paint, complicated hairdos, feathers and ear ornaments. Handcarved stone effigies weighing 125 pounds still bear some original pigments.
Visitors can explore a recreated wattle and daub home and learn about dugout canoes. They can also climb to the top of the tallest mound and imagine life in the valley below, then follow a nature trail along the scenic Etowah River. Picnic tables are available as well. From 1721 until 1736, Fort King George was the southern outpost of the British Empire in North America. A cypress blockhouse, barracks and palisaded earthen fort were constructed in 1721. His Majesty's Independent Company endured incredible hardships from disease, threats of Spanish and Indian attacks, and the unfamiliar coastal environment. After the fort was abandoned, General James Oglethorpe brought Scottish Highlanders to the site in 1736. The settlement, called Darien, became a foremost export center of lumber until 1925.
This fort on the Altamaha River has been reconstructed for tours. A museum and film cover the Guale Indians, the Santo Domingo de Talaje mission, the Scots of Darien and sawmilling. Remains of three sawmills and tabby ruins are still visible.

Fort Morris Historic Site

Hardman Farm Historic Site

When the Continental Congress convened in 1776, delegates recognized the importance of a fort to protect their growing seaport from the British. A low bluff on the Medway River was fortified and garrisoned by 200 patriots. When the British demanded the fort's surrender on November 25, 1778, the defiant Col. John McIntosh replied, "Come and take it!" The British refused and withdrew back to Florida. Forty-five days later, they returned with a superior force, and on January 9, 1779, Fort Morris fell.
Under the name of Fort Defiance, this bulwark was once again used against the British during the War of 1812, and Sunbury's harbor was guarded by armed barges. Today, visitors can stand within the earthwork remains and view Saint Catherines Sound. Programs, school tours and enactments are held throughout the year.

Georgia's newest state historic site opened in late 2014. This beloved landmark in north Georgia is best recognized for its gazebo-topped Indian mound and field of black-and-white cows. The main house, built in 1870 by Captain James Nichols, is a grand example of Italianate architecture and was originally known as "West End" because it was at the west end of the Nacoochee valley. The last owner was the family of Dr. Lamartine Hardman, who was Georgia's governor from 1927-1931.
Today, visitors can tour the restored and furnished main house, as well as a restored dairy barn. The site has a particularly nice 19th century parlor, and many furnishings are original.

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic Site

Jarrell Plantation Historic Site

In the early 1800s, William Brailsford of Charleston carved a rice plantation from marshes along the Altamaha River. While many factors made rice cultivation increasingly difficult after the Civil War, the family continued to grow rice until 1913. Later, the plantation became a dairy.
Today, a museum features silver from the family collection and a model of Hofwyl-Broadfield during its heyday. A brief film on the plantation's history is shown before visitors walk a short trail to the antebellum home. A guided tour allows visitors to see the home filled with family heirlooms, 18th and 19th century furniture and Cantonese china. The site also includes a nature trail along the marsh where rice once flourished. This is an excellent spot to look for herons, egrets, ibis and painted buntings.

Nestled in red clay hills, this cotton plantation was owned by a single family for more than 140 years. It survived Gen. Sherman's "March to the Sea," typhoid fever, the cotton boll weevil, the advent of steam power and a transition from farming to forestry. In 1847, John Fitz Jarrell built a simple heart pine house typical of most plantations and made many furnishings visitors still see today. After the Civil War, most slaves-turned-workers eventually left and their houses deteriorated. In the late 1800s, the family added a sawmill, cotton gin, gristmill, planer, sugar cane press and syrup evaporator.
Today, visitors can journey back in time as they tour remaining buildings. A video includes interviews with Jarrell family members. Annual programs showcase life during the 1800s.

Jefferson Davis Memorial Historic Site

Lapham-Patterson House Historic Site

When Confederate President Jefferson Davis and remaining staff members crossed the Savannah River into Georgia on May 3, 1865, they planned to unite rebel forces and continue fighting for the "Lost Cause." On May 9, 1865, they camped in this pine forest, not knowing pursuit was so close behind. At dawn, they were surrounded by two groups of Union cavalry who were unaware of each other's presence. Gunfire ensued until the federal forces realized they had been shooting at one another. Two Union cavalrymen died during the skirmish. Davis was taken prisoner and held in Virginia for two years until released.
Today, a monument marks the spot where he was arrested. Visitors can tour a museum, short trail and picnic area.

This whimsical Queen Anne cottage was built between 1884-85 for C.W. Lapham, a prosperous shoe merchant and survivor of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Lapham incorporated many features in his winter residence for health and fire safety. The asymmetrical plan, with few right angles, was considered healthier because it was closer to nature. Within 19 rooms are 45 doors and 53 windows, 24 of which are exterior. A double-flue chimney with walk-through stairway and cantilevered balcony exemplifies the skill of its builders and the concern for prevention of smoke inhalation.
A marvel of technology when built, the home was equipped with gas lighting, hot and cold running water, indoor plumbing and modern closets. This National Historic Landmark offers tours and is a unique venue for special events. www.thomascountyhistory.org

New Echota Cherokee Capital Historic Site Pickett's Mill Battlefield Historic Site

New Echota is one of the most significant Cherokee Indian sites in the nation. In 1825, the Cherokee legislature established a capital called New Echota at the headwaters of the Oostanaula River. It was the site of the first Indian-language newspaper, a case which carried to the U.S. Supreme Court, one of the earliest experiments in national self-government by an Indian tribe, the signing of a treaty which relinquished Cherokee claims to lands east of the Mississippi River, and the assembly of Indians for removal west on the infamous Trail of Tears.
Today, visitors can see 12 original and reconstructed buildings, including the courthouse, print shop, missionary home and an 1805 store. The visitor center includes exhibits, a research library and film. Nature trails lead to New Town Creek.

Pickett's Mill is one of the best preserved Civil War battlefields in the nation. Visitors can travel roads used by troops, see earthworks, and walk through the ravine where hundreds died. An 1800s cabin is open during certain events. On May 27, 1864, the Federal Army attempted to outflank the Confederate position. Some 14,000 Federal troops were selected for the task, and General Howard was given command. After a five-hour march, Howard's force reached the vicinity of Pickett's Mill and prepared to attack. Waiting were 10,000 Confederate troops under the command of General Cleburne. The Federal assault began at 5 p.m. Daybreak found the Confederates still in possession of the field. The Federals had lost 1,600 men compared to the Confederate loss of 500.

Robert Toombs House Historic Site

Roosevelt's Little White House Historic Site

Robert Toombs was a successful planter and lawyer who led a turbulent career as state legislator, U.S. Congressman and Senator. "Defend yourselves; the enemy is at your door...!" thundered Toombs from the Senate floor on January 24, 1860. The following year, Georgia seceded from the Union, and Toombs personified the South by evolving from conservative Unionist to fire-breathing secessionist. After serving just five months as Confederate Secretary of State, he resigned to serve as brigadier general in the Army of Northern Virginia.
In 1870, as the Reconstruction Era drew to a close in Georgia, Toombs felt that Georgia should live under a constitution of her own making. His last service was helping create the Constitution of 1877, which was not amended until 1945.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt built the Little White House in 1932 while still governor of New York. He came to Warm Springs hoping to find a cure for polio. Swimming in the warm waters brought him no cure, but did bring improvement. During FDR's presidency, he developed many New Deal programs based upon his experiences in this small town.
While posing for a portrait in 1945, FDR suffered a stroke and died in his country home. Today, this unfinished portrait is featured in the museum, along with his hand-controlled Ford, "Fireside Chats" on a radio and a video. Visitors can tour his home just as it was when he left it for the last time, servant quarters, the Walk of American Stones and Flags, and the historic pools complex that first brought the future president to Warm Springs.

Traveler's Rest Historic Site

Wormsloe Historic Site

This stagecoach inn and plantation was built around 1815 by James R. Wyly. He strategically located it along the newly constructed Unicoi Turnpike, a busy highway over the Appalachian Mountains. Wyly operated the inn until 1833 when he sold it to his neighbor Devereaux Jarrett.
Three generations of Jarretts inhabited the site until the state purchased the remaining acres of the once-vast plantation for $8,000 in 1955. Traveler's Rest was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964. Today, visitors can tour the house and see many original artifacts and furnishings.

A breathtaking avenue of live oaks leads to the tabby ruins of Wormsloe, the colonial estate of Noble Jones. Jones was a humble carpenter who arrived in Georgia in 1733 with James Oglethorpe and the first group of settlers from England. Wormsloe's tabby ruin is the oldest standing structure in Savannah.
Today, visitors can tour a museum with artifacts and a film about the founding of Georgia. A scenic trail leads past tabby ruins to a living-history area where demonstrators often exhibit tools and skills of colonial Georgia. Five miles of walking trails showcase the lowcountry terrain of live oaks, Spanish moss and salt marsh. Wormsloe hosts several events throughout the year, including the "Colonial Faire and Muster" in February which highlights 18th-century life.
