Discover Hidden Gems Throughout 2016
Throughout 2016, join the 85th anniversary celebration of Georgia's State Park System. We're spotlighting Hidden Gems all across the state with a full calendar of events. On March 12, take a guided hike to see a 400-year-old cedar tree at Elijah Clark State Park in Lincolnton or to search for rare Persistent Trillium at Tallulah Gorge State Park in northeast Georgia. On March 19, bike to a hidden pond at Stephen C. Foster State Park in the Okefenokee Swamp. Check out more hikes and programs at GaStateParks.org
Park Activities
Seasonal Parks Open
Spring brings not only budding flowers but also the opening of seasonal parks and facilities. You can rent a cabin at Black Rock Mountain to explore some of north Georgia's best hiking trails. Or reserve a campsite at Moccasin Creek to enjoy fishing on Lake Burton. Other parks that open facilities this month include Hamburg (Washington County), Hart (Lake Hartwell), Watson Mill Bridge (near Athens) and Hardman Farm Historic Site (Sautee Nacoochee).
Top Fishing Spots
TakeMeFishing.org wants help in naming the top 100 family-friendly places for fishing and boating in the U.S. Vote for your favorite and you could win prizes. Georgia has a few state parks on the list, including Red Top Mountain, Richard B. Russell, Seminole, Smithgall Woods and Sweetwater Creek. Please vote for your favorite Georgia State Park by March 27. Instagram fans, share your best photos and tag #GaStateParks and #FirstCatch.

Pack a picnic and your camera to celebrate Easter in Georgia's State Parks & Historic Sites. Several sites are hosting Easter egg hunts for children of all ages. Large families can reserve picnic shelters and group shelters for an all-day affair. For more ranger programs, visit GaStateParks.org and the parks' web pages. Upcoming Events
Scottish Heritage Days March 19-20
All ages will enjoy this showcase of Georgia's Scottish and colonial history, with weapon demonstrations and cannon firings, re-enactors, blacksmithing, weaving, period cooking and music, and fort tours. A battle reenactment will be 2 p.m. Saturday and a traditional Scottish "Kirkin of the Tartans" will be 10 a.m. Sunday. $4.50-$7.50 admission. 912-437-4770.
Fort King George Historic Site, Darien
Little River Festival March 26, 10 a.m. 4 p.m.
This annual festival includes live bird of prey shows, an Easter Egg hunt, bounce houses, pontoon boat tours, fishing, fire trucks, animal adoption event, an imagination station for kids, food vendors, arts and crafts, and music. $5 parking. 229-8963551.

Sweep the Hooch April 7
Whether walking along the banks or paddling among the shoals, you can make a difference during this sixth annual river cleanup. Volunteers are needed at Sweetwater Creek, Don Carter and Chattahoochee Bend state parks. Last year, 580 volunteers cleared more than 7 tons of trash from the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries.
