National Register news
The Eastside Historic District, located in the city of West Point, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on August 28, 2012. The West Point Historic Preservation Commission sponsored the nomination and a consultant prepared the nomination materials.
The original settlement of West Point, known as Franklin, was located on the east side of the Chattahoochee River. The name changed about the same time that the city's commercial area began migrating to the west side of the river in the 1830s. In 1834, even before the railroad arrived, supporters of the Montgomery Railroad Company formed the West Point Company. In 1839 this speculative company laid out the street plan for much of the Eastside Historic District. The city of West Point developed as a railroad hub, beginning in the 1850s with the completion of lines to Montgomery and Atlanta. The last quarter of the 19th century brought prosperity from textile mills along the Chattahoochee River, and West Point served as a commercial, administrative, and cultural center for the river valley.
NPS external programs report
The National Park Service (NPS) recently released a new document that collectively addresses programs that fall outside the traditional scope of the park system, commonly referred to as the "external programs." Critical of the attention paid to these programs by the NPS, last year, a task force convened by Preservation Action and consisting of twelve major national historic preservation organizations released a report entitled Aligned for Success...Recommendations to Increase the Effectiveness of the Federal Historic Preservation Program. It includes information on 28 programs including National Heritage Areas and the Historic Preservation Fund. For each program information is provided regarding the mission, background, program requirements, administration, and accomplishments. According the document, "...this document is the only place where these programs that take place outside national park boundaries are addressed collectively describing a complete mosaic of the NPS's outreach and mission."
