May is Archaeology & Preservation Month!
The Society for Georgia Archaeology's (SGA)19th annual Georgia Archaeology Awareness promotion, Archaeology Month 2012, has as its theme "Commemorating the Bicentennial of the War of 1812." A number of past and present SGA board members, representatives from Georgia's archaeological community, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) attended the proclamation signing on May 2 at the Capitol in Atlanta.
Pictured L to R: Dylan Woodliff, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc.; Leslie Perry, SGA Board Member; Homer Bryson, DNR Deputy Commissioner ; Elizabeth Shirk, HPD and Past President of the SGA; Joe Joseph, New South Associates; Catherine Long, Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center and President of the SGA; Tammy Herron, Savannah River Archaeological Research Program and Vice President of the SGA; Pamela Baughman, GDOT, Secretary of the SGA, and President of the Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists; Bryan Tucker, HPD and State Archaeologist; Mark Williams, DNR Commissioner; and Alana Hise, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc.
This year's Preservation Month theme is "Discovering Georgia's Hidden Gems," which is a great match for our 2012 "Downtown Georgia" photo contest. We've had a great response already - submissions are due by May 24.

In partnership with The Georgia Trust, HPD is cosponsoring our 3rd annual Preservation Month Lecture Series at Rhodes Hall in Atlanta every Thursday in May. Lectures and light refreshments are free and begin at 6pm. Our second lecture on May 10 featured SCAD professor Brian Sweny's presentation entitled Rail - Peachtree Station with Purpose. Inspired by Atlanta's Peachtree Station, SCAD Atlanta interior design students created adaptive reuse plans for the classically designed Neel Reid building to answer the question: Once AMTRAK moves out, what can we do with the Peachtree Railway Station? Join us next Thursday, May 17 for Creating the West Georgia Textile Heritage Trail by Dr. Keith S. Hebert and Dr. Ann McCleary from the University of West Georgia.
