Summer HPC Training registration is now open!
Registration for our one-day Summer Historic Preservation Commission Training is now available on the Georgia Downtown Association website. This one day training is sponsored with the support of the GDA during their annual conference in LaGrange, August 22-24, 2012. The HPC Track will be offered on Thursday, August 23 at Del'Avant Event Center in downtown LaGrange. For more information about training content please contact Leigh Burns at 404-651-5181. Historic Landscape and Garden Grant Program
The 2012 Historic Landscape and Garden Grant program provides funds for the preservation of Georgia's historic gardens and landscapes. Non-profit organizations and local governments are eligible to apply for the 50/50 matching grant in amounts up to $3,000. All projects must be completed by October 15, 2013. Guidelines and the application are on the Garden Club of Georgia's website. If you have questions about the grant program, please contact Carole Moore or Joy Vannerson. The 2nd round deadline is August 1, 2012.

Recent HPD activities
June 13 - Staff visited three historic houses in Jones County to advise on National Register, take photos for National Register documentation, and visit a on ongoing tax-incentives project.
June 18 - Staff presented at Central Savannah River Area Regional Commission/Historic Augusta Inc. Historic Preservation Commission Training in Augusta.
June 18-19 - Staff conducted an underwater side-scan sonar survey of Lake Franklin at FDR State Park, Harris County, to assess possible safety and preservation issues related to damage from an April 2011 tornado.
June 19 - Staff visited Centennial Farms in Hall and Jackson counties.
June 19 - Staff visited a house in north Atlanta to advise the owners on listing in the National Register.
June 20 - Staff participated in ongoing Fernbank Museum and Georgia State University archaeological dig at 16th century contact site in Telfair County.
June 21 - Staff visited Centennial Farms in Laurens and Johnson counties.
June 20-21 - Staff conducted archaeological reconnaissance survey for timber harvest proposal review at Horse Creek WMA, Telfair County.

When the National Trust recently announced its 2012 list of 11 Most Endangered Sites, Atlanta's Sweet Auburn Historic District was listed for the second time in 20 years. Find out why and what's being planned to help.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation has recently launched a new initiative, National Treasures, to provide intensive assistance to historic sites. "This revolving portfolio of sites represents critically threatened places across the country where the National Trust is making a deep organizational investment." Learn more about the sites on the list, criteria for selecting sites (they plan to expand the list to100), and an actual Treasures campaign in action.
Adventures in Preservation
Adventures in Preservation offers a range of week-long trips that invite participants to learn a preservation skill and help repair a historic building. Projects include a 1930s gas station in Virginia, a mansion in New York City, churches in Italy, and a tower house in Albania.
