Pelham becomes Georgia's 83rd CLG!
Photo courtesy of Steven Walton, Pelham, Ga. Congratulations to Pelham, located in Mitchell County, on becoming Georgia's newest Certified Local Government (CLG). Pelham was designated a CLG by the National Park Service in late December and now joins the Georgia's other CLGs in supporting strong local historic preservation planning. Pelham is now eligible for Certified Local Government/Historic Preservation Fund grants as part of the larger, national CLG program jointly administered by HPD and the National Park Service. One of the first goals of the Pelham Historic Preservation Commission is an update for their city wide historic resource survey which was originally completed in the 1970's. Pelham also plans to apply for CLG/ HPF grant funds to support their historic preservation design guidelines.

National Register news
The (first) Georgia Welcome Center opened 50 years ago this month. The Georgia Welcome Center (now the Georgia Visitor Information Center), located on U.S. Highway 301 approximately 16 miles northeast of the county seat of Sylvania in Screven County, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on December 29, 2011. The Georgia Welcome Center nomination was sponsored by the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), which also prepared the nomination materials. Its listing in the National Register will be acknowledged during Tourism & Hospitality Day, January 24, 2012 at the Capitol in Atlanta. Presentation of the National Register certificate will be made to Paul Selby, Director of Visitor Services, Tourism Division, GDEcD by Dr. Dave Crass, Director of the Historic Preservation Division, Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Architecturally, the property is an excellent and intact example of mid20th-century modernism in a small public building in Georgia. Architect Edwin C. Eckles (1928-1995) of Statesboro designed the building with an unusual series of arched vaults made of thin pre-cast concrete shells forming the roof, ceiling, and canopy. The modern design also reflected the Vandiver administration's desire for Georgia to be seen as a state that was looking to the future, while offering
