Archaeologist Ray Crook remembered
Dr. Morgan Ray Crook, Jr. died January 18, 2012 at his residence on St. Simons Island. Ray was deputy state archaeologist for many years while working at the a professor at the University of West Georgia as a professor and director of the Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Archaeological Laboratory.
HPD's Director and State Archaeologist Dr. Dave Crass said, "During his active career and into his sadly brief retirement, Ray rendered exemplary service to the people of Georgia by investigating and advocating for careful management and fact-based interpretation of publicly-owned archaeological sites. Above all, Ray was passionate about Sapelo Island's matchless archaeological record as well as the people of Hog Hammock. He was a mentor to me in my early days at DNR and continued working on DNR coastal archaeology projects right up until his death. All of us in the Georgia's archaeological community mourn his passing."
Read about a recent trip Ray led to Sapelo Island on the Society for Georgia Archaeology website.
