National Register news
The Dr. Charles and Louise Zattau House, located at 290 Lakeside Drive, Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on July 3, 2012. The property owners sponsored the nomination and prepared the nomination materials. This privately-owned property is not open to the public.
The Dr. Charles and Louise Zattau House is a small, compact Ranch House in the Carrington Woods subdivision north of downtown Milledgeville. Carrington Woods features roughly 100 lots laid out along winding, curvilinear streets. Completed in 1951, the Zattau house is a low, one-story Ranch House with a low-slung hip roof and unusual pink granite walls. The house was listed at the local level of significance because it is an excellent example of an early Ranch House in Milledgeville with its long, low proportions, hip roof, and zoned interior plan. In 1947 Dr. Charles and Louise Zattau purchased three adjoining lots in the Carrington Woods subdivision north of downtown Milledgeville. Dr. Zattau, who served as a major in the dental corps during the Second World War, and Louise Zattau were among the first to build in the new subdivision. The Zattaus hired an architect (not known) to design their house, which is believed to be the first Ranch House in Milledgeville. The Zattaus remained in the house until Dr. Zattau died in 1985 and Louise Zattau sold the property to the current owners in 1998.
